    Myst V - Windows 8

Hey there, just got a new computer and have Win 8, 64 bit. Installed the game fine. Clicked play, and got the following:
"Exception type: Access violation, Call stack (14 levels):" ... is there a patch available for Windows 8? Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to the Forums!

I've moved this thread to the Myst V End of Ages- Technical Help & Advice Forum, which is its proper location.

NOTE: Anything that's in type of a different color (usually blue), is a link to another Internet site. Double-left-click on a link to go to its site.

    In general,
-- a. Install End of Ages (EoA) to your C: drive, accepting the install defaults as much as possible.
----- 1. Do NOT install the game to an external drive, either USB or E-SATA.
-- b. Start EoA from a fresh boot.
----- 1. Reboot, log into Windows with full Administrator privileges (NOT into a Limited User or Power User account), and close all open applications. (Open the Control Panel, and select User Accounts. Your User Name should show Administrators under Group.)
----- 2. Disable all tasks running in the background, especially anti-virus/spyware/adware/pop-up programs, task schedulers, remote system control programs (such as Microsoft NetMeeting) or other programs shown on the Windows task bar.
----- 3. If you have only a software firewall, do NOT disable it!
----- 4. Do NOT forget to re-enable your anti-virus/spyware/adware/pop-up programs after finished playing EoA.
-- c. Do NOT run any other programs before starting EoA.
-- d. Do NOT boot up with the EoA disc in the drive, or with a disc in any drive.
-- e. If the EoA disc autostarts when you insert it into the drive, cancel back to the Desktop.
-- f. Start the game using the EoA icon on the Desktop, NOT the menu item on the disc.

Always start EoA by doing steps b through f, above.

What you're getting is an Access Violation Error. This error occurs when you try to start EoA, and you see something like:

    Exception type: Access violation
    Call stack (14 levels):

    1. Update your video and sound drivers to the latest from your PC manufacturer, or from the sound and video chipset manufacturers. Even though you have a new PC, its existing drivers may well not be the latest available.

    2. If that doesn't solve the problem, proceed as follows.

Apply the patch contained in Myst5InitFiles.zip, available here (our thanks to eric.am for this patch!). When you unzip Myst5InitFiles.zip, you'll have the following files and folders:
    -- README.txt
    -- progress.db (in \Myst V End of Ages folder)
    -- audio.ini (in \Myst V End of Ages\init subfolder)
    -- graphics.ini (in \Myst V End of Ages\init subfolder)

    From README.txt:

"Before you follow this instructions, you should have installed Myst V with the dvd-rom.

Copy the folder in the zip file (Myst V End of Ages) to:
    C:\Users\<your windows username>\AppData\Local

(If you can't find the folder, remember that AppData is a hidden directory.
Turn on hidden files, or enter the folder path directly into the address bar of Windows Explorer.)"

To apply this patch, you must:
-- a. Have installed Myst V to your C: drive, using the install defaults.
    -- b. Download and unzip Myst5InitFiles.zip.
-- c. Copy the \Myst V End of Ages folder (which also automatically copies the \init subfolder) from Myst5InitFiles.zip to your C:\Users\<your windows username>\AppData\Local folder.
----- 1. If you can't find C:\Users\<your windows username>\AppData\Local, set your Windows Explorer options to allow viewing hidden files. (Click on Tools > Folder Options > View, click on radio button for "Show hidden files and folders", then click on Apply > OK)

    Myst V - Windows 8.1

I read all the steps to take, but I have Explorer 11, and under TOOLS, I don't see "Folder Options". All I can see is "Internet Options", and no tab showing "View".
I have the exact same problems.
Also my AVAST anti virus has no option to Disabling it.
Mine loaded the whole game, and at the very end it says "insert disc 3 to install DirectX 9.0c", and it wouldn't install. I have DirectX 11 on Windows 8.1
Any help out there would be appreciated

    Welcome to the Forums!

    1. Which version of EoA are you trying to install, the original CD version or the more recent DVD version?

    2. Are you trying to install EoA directly from disc, or by using the Program Compatibility utility?

    3. When you install EoA, a file called vpd.properties is written to your primary hard drive. This file must be either modified or deleted before EoA can be re-installed. If you tried to install the game more than once, did you properly address vpd.properties before each following install?
