I'm considering getting DSL 64/256 connectivity (so far I have had 56k dial up). Should I expect better online experience (less lag, better pings) or should I go for higher option (128/512), DSL pricing in my country is quite costly, so please don't laugh at me being considerate...

Well you will get a better connection with
512kbps down and 64kbps upload http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

However ping is an echo time (your computer to another one and back). Ping is influenced by line-congestion (something you have with any phone line - cable / fiber don't have congestion problems (much)).

So the connection might be better giving you less kicks from servers, but ping will be about the same...
