How many of you would buy a WW1 game if Oleg ever turned his attention that way?

I for one would be straight down the shop o buy it.

Its a shame that WW1 saw the first planes to fly in combat and yet it awaits a truely upto date sim.

Stafing trenches while getting knocked about by intense MG fire sounds thrilling to me.

I know of two games in develoment stage Knights over Europe and Birds of Prey but will they ever see the light of day?

Im sure Oleg could pull off an enthralling WW1 sim. It also has the chance for some real immersive campaign story lines.

Who else would like to see this?

A WW1 Maddox sim? Yea I'd buy it.

Hey! Wasnt Oleg working on a RTS(WW2 Eastern Front IIRC) a while back? Whatever happened to that?

Hell, I would buy that in a heartbeat. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif I've been waiting for a good WWI sim for a long time. I think it would even be more challenging than FB. Flying around in crate made of wood and canvass with only a machine gun or two, never knowing when your plane will fall apart in dive, and no parachute to save your butt.

I think we just need to be patient. I'm sure Oleg will get around to it eventually. There is so much that still needs to be covered involving WWII, not to mention the Korean War, and hopefully the Spanish Civil War. Still, I'll gladly trade the latter two for a WWI sim by Oleg any day. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/11.gif

Canvas Jacket Mod for Red Baron 2 came out not too long ago- www.plgrafix.com (http://www.plgrafix.com) Lots of improvements that have taken this classic as far as it will go without having access to the code.

Having just flown the J8 against a Gladiator, (a total blast, by the way) I think an Oleg Maddox WW1 Sim would be welcomed by many. Just imagine what Oleg could do with an online team of Gotha or Zeppelin crews fighting it out over the trenches, for instance. Not to mention all the great skins that people could come up with. I vote YES!

That would be a real crowd pleaser!

unfortunately i dont think Oleg has any plans for this!

I would and many of my friends would buy this if it were ever released.

The maps would be very hard to create though all those trenches and other such details, it would be a massive job.
To date there are no decent WW1 sims at all air land or sea.

Why has this era been forgotten?

There's already too much whining about the planes from an era with fair documentation, now imagine the crying, screaming, and kicking you'll get with no reliable data.

You are so right, I can hear it now.... "That heavy whirling mass of that rotary engine keeps wanting to flip my plane over and it turns better left than right (or is it the other way around?) and where is the throttle?" "Why is there no Liberty Engined plane?"

I would buy it though, in a heartbeat. Imagine the immersion and the music.

Personally, I would prefer the Spanih Civil War first. We could work backwards.

I'd buy it like a shot (no pun) - I much prefere the canvas and string planes.

IIRC, Oleg preferes WWII - so I'd just be happy for him to manage the project, and let other's do the work.

There was a WWI development group - I recall a woderful Albatros III by a guy in Spain or Portugal.

OH YES!!!!

I remembered how I loved playing Red Baron 3d on line flying my somewhat fragile Neiuport 28.

I would buy that in a heart beat and would be waiting impatiently until it was released!

Lifetime customer here for any Oleg sim. Flight sims are not top selling games so we're fortunate to have someone making them with such attention to detail. You've got to respect someone who not only makes the best flight sim in the world but will also admit mistakes and make an effort to correct them.

Actually, there is a large contingent of RB3d players (and the game is still alive and well) here. Many of these players with no code to be able to work the original software patched/added/developed/evolved the sim to a shocking point......

Flanders in Flames a Squadron based war much like Iron Skies/Forgotten Skies and a host of other groups and individuals have easily quadrupled the planes, added things thought impossible and expanded the sim 10 fold.....Kudo's to all there that have contributed many many years......and no insult to Oleg/Maddox/Ubi/IL2 players....but frankly have developed substancially more then has been here, and with no resources.

Why do I say the above as RB3d is essentially the last dinosaur of glide struggling to stay alive day to day?......

As if Ubi would make the effort they'd find a wealth of information to answer virtually every question they could ever have in that community alone......The research some of those folks have done and the knowledge they have aquired is staggering..........

and one day, some software firm will discover this.......as WWI combat even as portrayed in Rb2 (can you say 5,000 men ground battles), Rb3d player made addons (every freakish plane imaginable, fights that take 10 minutes to line up, etc.) and the like is amazing to behold, a challenge like no other, and the true test of pilot skill the machine having little to do with it......

on that day you may find a large group of online players saying "IL2 SturmoWhat?....OOOOhhhh, I remember that sim, this one much harder".

I would LOVE a WWI sim. I've always longed for some awesome Fokker Dr.1/Sopwith Camel faceoffs, although it would be interesting to see how Oleg would implement some of those early bombing tactics (visual bombing perhaps?).

I started a thread over a year ago,on SIM HQ trying to get Oleg to do a WWI sim...there was plenty of support. I think a WWI sim done by Oleg would be awesome, the problem is, that Oleg is an engineer and a perfectionist, the lack of data, I think, worries him, for precisely the reasons posted above. My feeling is that Oleg should just do it using his experience, the available data, common sense, and in the complete knowledge that a WWI sim can only EVER be an approximation of the FMs. I think people would buy it by the bucket load! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

SOMEBODY never played the old Dynamix game "Red Baron." Lemme tell ya, with my brand spanking new Intel 386, that game had AWESOME graphics http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif In many ways, though, it wasn't unlike the IL-2 series--it even had the same realism panel.

I forget the site, but in an interview, Oleg was asked about a WWI Sim. He stated that he had no interest whatsoever in a WWI sim. He said something like...

To complex in some ways and too simple in others.

So, don't hold your breath.

This was back at the beginning of 2003.

Thanks to Gemmring for setting up this nice site. I have posted several of the planes we are working on. We are a fan based initiative to get WW1 planes flying in the flight sim IL-2 Sturmovik. More correctly, the sequel to IL-2, Forgotten Battles. Oleg Maddox, the creator of IL-2, has told us that if we were to submit a package of 16 or more plane models that were up to the quality standards of Forgotten Battles (the highest standards of any flight sim I've seen to date) he would make the flight models for them and we would be able to fly WW1 planes using his incredible flight engine and graphics.

The planes being modelled so far:

Sopwith Camel
Sopwith Snipe
Fokker D7
Fokker E3
Nieuport 11
Albatros D2, D3, DVa
Roland CIIa

To find out more about this project go to:

http://www.il2center.com/Forums/viewforum.php?f=22

To check out our database and see our complete library of WW1 planes, photos, flight data, etc. Check out mossies incredible WW1 Library at:

(click on Aircraft with Engines on the top left to get to the real meat of the website)

And finally, if you think you'd like to make a WW1 model yourself, contact me at:

This was May 26, 2003..

Things got pretty quiet for a while here. We are picking up steam again however. The biggest change is we are no longer aiming to be an addon for Forgotten Battles, but will aim for the next Maddox sim down the road. This will give us the time to get enough planes complete to do WW1 justice.

Right now, we are working on the Alb. D2, D3 and Dva. The Snipe. The Roland CII, the Camel, the N-17 and the N-11.
What we need are a couple of Allied two-seaters.
Preferably, the Sopwith Strutter being one of them. And of course, the Fokker D7. Unfortunately, we lost our modellor of the D7 and his model.
I am unsure of the status of the E3 as I have not heard from Drone since Feb.

I had such high hopes for that too... it has since died as far as I know. The forum link is NFG too, so that almost confirms it.
