Hi,

I may have the chance to get an Aeolus Geforce4 MX440 8X pretty cheap. If you have this card and can let me know how it performs, or if you can point me towards any benchmarks for comparisons, it'd be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Nutcase

Kozhedub: In combat potential, the Yak-3, La-7 and La-9 fighters were indisputably superior to the Bf-109s and Fw-190s. But, as they say, no matter how good the violin may be, much depends on the violinist. I always felt respect for an enemy pilot whose plane I failed to down.

Just drop 100$ at CompUSA for ATI made 9200 (non~SE) with 1 year walk-in replacement warranty and you have super fps and hi res. That's what I use.

Before that I had played FB with motherboard grafix including Trident chipset so you are talking to the Expert of below low end FB playing. In FB grafix Menu, you know the lowest grafix Option called FLAT, well in the FB "conf" file I found ways to manually go below that level...Trident made me do it, and it worked!

That card is barely good and obsolescent. If you want to have a good card and still not to pay too much, just look at 'what's cool' right now, and wait some months.

When budgeting about a PC, patience is always rewarded.

Unless you're rich. Then get 'what's cool' now. And those incredible rigs and giant screens all the posh boys boast about around here... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/59.gif

I started playing the original a year and then some ago on a MX440. Do yourself a favor and read a few reviews on some better cards.

If you go with a 440 you won't be satisfied and will not be able to do anything near justice to the plane models and all the beautiful skins that we have access to.

Just remember that todays "out of my budget" card is the best card you ever installed at a bargin price in 6 months to a year.

Walking into local store off the street and trading cash for card is not a ripoff especially with a 1 year walk in replacement warranty.

Waiting weeks for the mail to exchange dead burnt out 9800 Ultra or 5900 Pro is a Ripoff. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

It is when the card is worth $50 and you're paying $100. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Besides, the chances of you using any warranty outside the first 90 days are slim. In over 10 years of building my own PC's, I can count on one hand the number of components that had to be replaced due to failure...and none were video cards.

http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif The few dollars saved by internet searching, ordering, and waiting for an inexpensive product is less money then what I can make working in that same amount of time. But for high end expensive prototype video cards, that may be a productive search with real savings.

We agree about the warranty, there is only a slim chance for ATI made 9200 burning out. Experimental 9800 and 5900 cards are another story and there are many such sad stories. Also, 9200 is my first "real" video card, as opposed to the absolutely horrible motherboard grafix, and when I made my decision to buy, I did not want to wait a week.

THat's fine and dandy, but how exactly are the 5900 and 9800 'experimental' cards, praytell?

LEXX_Luthor

No I have never dealt with FedEX or paid them extra money (there goes the internet shopping savings lol -- for shipping low cost products not high cost products).

mmm. Higher incidence of dead cards perhaps. I just see alot of people talking about having to return their 300$+ video cards for exchange. The 9800 and 5900 should be getting more reliable, as with most hardware that has been on the market for some time.

Also, I am only talking about 9200 for 3 year old FB flight sim, as FB is the only computer game I play.

Until recently, I've been running on a GeForce 4 MX420. It serves me well, but is by now admittedly obsolete.
A bit more will get you a FX-5200 or Radeon 9200, which, while not high performance card by any means, will provide you with respectable performance. Hell, you might even be able to get a 9600, which is a pretty good vid card, for pretty much the same price (according to PriceWatch).

First off the shipping is free, secondly, since the 9200 is your first real vidcard, I doubt your opinion on how many people you've 'heard' say they had to replace $300 cards(even though you can get a 9800XT for 180-210 right now). Unfortunately, I know this **** since i look into getting new vidcards all the time, unfortunately since im young, saving money for a videocard isn't exactly on the top of the list. :P

hi,

just a thought, thinking i might cop some flak for this, but a decent low cost card would be the geforce3 ti500 (if you can find one). I'm a computer science student and im broke, but with a little bit of system tweaking, manage very well running il2fb.

you can pick them up on ebay for about 25 or equiv' in dollars, overclock it a little and get some really acceptable frame rates with anti-aliasing on. Obviously the card is only 4X AGP and has less memory/bandwidth overall capabilities etc than other modern ones but if your on a budget then you wont go wrong.

Yep, the 9200 (non SE) is a fantastic card for the price. They are only about 30 quid on ebay now. Even better would be a Radeon 8500 which is faster than the 9200 and cheaper as most people think, lower number, must be worse. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I got my 8500 a few months ago for 27 and it runs FB great on excellent settings 1024,768.

I also agree that the GF 3 TI500 is a great buy at the moment at around 30. The 8500/9200 is a bit faster tho.

Now ANYONE can afford a decent video card.

By the way. In response to the GF 5 FX 5900XT, ATI have dropped the price of the 9800 Pro to 150. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Then we doubt FB simmers/simmerettes who post, here, at the ubi.com. Congratulations on your shipping however, although shipping is of more relative importance for low cost products. We are in full agreement here.

*** one must beware however. If somebody's cheap card like 9200 died they would not be as hehe motivated out of frustration to post about it. So I may be wrong. What I do probably see correctly is the frustration felt by many high end card buyers.

Besides the people posting about returning dead 9800 cards, another thing is the 9800/5600 bizzarro textures alot of simmers post about. I figure they can be fixed, eventually, by downloading and installing/uninstalling different versions of ATI/Nvida Beta software drivers.

For some reason the Nvida Ti 4x00 series seem to die alot, just judging by posts on webboards. That was one reason I went for 9200 instead, that and I didn't want the deep Nvida colours but I am wondering now if Nvida would make the sea level FB sky more blue--a long dream of mine http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif -- but not the high altitude sky that is too deep blue as it is now *ugh*

More important for me--and others like me--was that my 9200 ran perfectly fine out of the box. I still use the original software on the CD. Install was simple for a Noob like me. For some this is the way to go. Certainly not for all simmers and definitely NOT for hardcore computer gamers who play far beyond FB.

My advice? Forget about it. In the more modern cards you want nothing less than a 5700Ultra Nvidia or a 9600 Pro ATI. Even those will be old cards very soon. If you can find a Ti4600 somewhere fro or a good price... or a 9500pro.. then its safe to go with that.. but GF4MX? Fuggedaboudit.

I have a GF4 Ti4200 128 Mb in a P4 2.8 Mhz 512 Mb, and I can ensure you that although you can use perfect settings, in this mode you'll only enjoy a decent frame rate in QMB with a very few objects. In a normal mission, you'll have slow-downs and stutters.

I always use excellent settings, and then it runs pretty well.

Anyway, all the latest Nvidia drivers above 5x.xx make perfect settings in GF4 crash. Nvidia drivers install as cr*p, so I have not reverted to 45.23, because I can live without 'perfect' and I'm afraid the cure could be worst than illness.

I guess I'll buy a new card in some months, as soon as they are a little cheaper and my budget allows it.
