Hi,

Last night I was shot down several times flying a La-7 againts a Stuka. The rear gunner on the Stuka was very good. Everytime I approached it from 6 six O'clock, I was shot down.

What technics do you use to attack a bomber suach as Stuka, IL-2 or HE111? Starting from underneath then up OR from above then dive onto it? Please give me some ideas.
Thanks.

Richard

i attack planes with only one reargunner on the upper side most likely by closing in from behind, lower than it, then come up directly behind them and fire all weapons, giving the gunner no chance to react. planes with many gunnerpositions (heavy bombers) are best to be attacked frontal in a head on, then fly a wide turn around them and attack again in a head on.
its good to use much rudder because you plane will slip then making it even harder to the gunner to know where to aim.

try coming in from the frontal position and climbing up to attack them. you can almost always shoot out the engines or the cockpit. just remember not to get greedy, once you've shot the engine up it will more than likely go down sooner or later.

I also was shot down by stuka many times. I couldn't know how to destroy it though. However, when I played a role of stuka's rear gunner in stuka missions, I became aware of stuka's weak points. I recommend you to be a rear gunner before being a intercepter.

Where can I play as a rear gunner in a Stuka? Single mission, full-mission in FB or on-line?

How do I set it up? Actually, I've ever tried to be a rear gunner in IL-2 but I never figured out how to aim as a rear gunner. I must did some thing wrong.

To my understanding, I can be either a pilot OR a gunner in a bomber and be able to switch between them. But when I played as the reargunner, I could NOT aim the gun. It was fixed. Any buttons or commends I should take in order to aim the gun freely? Please help.

Thanks.

Hmmm....I don't know well. Without any setting changes, you should be able to aim with mouse. If it doesn't work, you can post your problem in the tech forum. Good luck! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Edit: Check the key mapping in game first.

When you switch to the gunner position in a bomber you may have to toggle the autopilot on or off (the 'A' key on the keyboard I believe). Once you switch, keep an eye on how the plane is flying. Sometimes the pilot's autopilot does not engage and you have to jump back into thepilot's seat and hit 'A'. Then jump back to the gunner (hit 'A' again if you can't aim the gun).

The gunner's positions all use the mouse to aim and fire.

Well, take a Lagg3, so you can attack from any direction you want, without worrying of engine dying or plane beeing damaged by german bomber defensive fire /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Or use the rockets, one hit and one kill.. Fortunalety (For OKL-players) no air-to-air missles in La5/LA7s :/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

online the autopilot will never work, you have to fly the plane with your stick and aim the gun with your mouse, i personally love this weird feeling... managed to shoot down a few planes, too. most likely pilot or control kills.

ai will always be more accurate then a human rear gunner it should be the other way around, also if you noticed ai can reach shot deflection angles human rear gunners cant

As to downing Stuka's, you can try approching from the rear and above from a wide angle- the rear gunners weapon postion has very limited horizontal traverse, so you can easily approach outside of it's fire-arc.

The downside with this approach is you have to be reasonably good with deflection shooting to hit the Stuka..........

"As weaponry, both were good, but in far different ways from each other. In a nutshell, I describe it this way: if the FW 190 was a sabre, the 109 was a florett, or foil, like that used in the precision art of fencing." - Gunther Rall

If you hit "C" button that will transfer you to gunner as pilot-crew go autopilot itself. So don't need use "A"

I remember one game where the AI actually made head-on attacks against bomberformations, "B-17 The Mousy Eight", every time they'd made a pass they'd circle for another one, wonder if this is implementable for FB?

Also keep your speed high when attacking bombers that have defensive fire from the angle you're attacking at. Gives them less time to aim and for me this usually works pretty well.

Three words..Boom and Zoom. Always attack a big bomber either head on, the sides, from above, or from below..NEVER from dead 6 and Always at an angle in case of gunners at those positions. Remember most guns don't have the ability to track 360 degrees so if you stay at an angle outside of the gunners range of motion you get a free pass. I usually attack bombers from almost directly above and to the right...I fire from about 150m as I pass between the wing and the tail..flying right through one of the gunners blind spots, I pull up and repeat.

[b]"Pilots who liked to dogifght could do it their own way. I avoided it. I always attacked at full speed and I evaded a bounce in the same manner. When you were hit from above and behind, and your attacker held his fire until he was really close, you knew you were in with someone who had a great deal of experience.-Erich Hartmann"[b]

AC with gunners are definetly tough in this game, in fact I think those upcoming B-17 box formations are gonna be MURDER!

some planes have a issue with dead six /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif
tbh speed
i find diving down with cockpit on too hard
cos well theres stuff in the way of my view of target /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif
for deflection etc
oh and fire with everything u got /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif
