Finally had a chance to fly the a/c I've always wanted to fly in a sim. Set up a quick mission against several veteran-level P-38s at low alt in order to simulate the most famous IAR 81 engagement of all time: it was a blast! Must say that I'm pleased with the IAR. It's slow, but it rolls and turns well, and the cannon-armed variant (81a) packs a decent punch. It was relatively easy to take on the Lightnings low and slow. When I tried the same scenario at higher alt things didn't work out so well. The Lightnings maintained alt and speed and yo-yo'd me to death. My poor IAR had no chance of keeping up in a zoom climb (although I tried--foolish), my wingman got dusted, and I had to split-ess to the deck rolling like a madman in order to avoid a similar fate. Even so, my wings looked like swiss cheese. Which brings me to damage modeling: Romanian pilots reported that fires on board an IAR were especially dangerous for the jockey because the main tank was right in front of the cockpit. Well, Oleg seems to have heard about this. You don't want this bird catching on fire, believe me. You have about three seconds to bail out if it does, otherwise it's crispy critter city (followed by a loud boom).

Anyone else have any opinions they want to post about this a/c? I'd be interested to hear 'em.

For the folks outside of North America: I feel your pain. I lived in Southeastern Europe for a long time and ended up paying whopping international delivery charges for the latest games. I hope to see you all online very soon.

Domnilor, in sfarsit a ajuns!

PS Also flew the G50--also a blast. It's even slower than the IAR, but it seemed to me to be the better turner. Took on some Hurri Mk. 1's at low alt and dusted 'em.

Tried it. Beautiful. I thought of it as rather good climber, maintaining good climb up above 7km. Kinda like P~51s maybe....I dunno just saying. I do know P~51 was not known for climb rates.

I did some AI comparisons back a few Patches ago, let IAR80, G~50, and the French Morane plane climb AI waypoints and the IAR left them both behind.

German pilots reported IAR's performance to be in the same area as Bf109 E except dive.
I'm happy to see that Oleg got it pretty much right, but I can't comment right now , I don't have the game yet.

Felicitari norocosilor!!

Nu in US aici in Europe.

Cumparatul nu este o problema , locuiesc in acelasi oras unde rcsim. are sediul. Defapt il cunosc pe propritarul magazinului.Este baiat de ciocolata!
Trimisul aia e problema.

had the AIR 80/81 series realy an automatic propeller control , and not "only" a constant speed propeller ?

should tne radiator not only be controled manual , so no "automatik" setting availabe ?

hasnt the IAR81 jabo one SC50 too much under each wing ?

i "want" as minimum an IAR80a fighter with 6 light machineguns http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

IAR experts ??

btw, i build a Ploesti 10.June44 mission with IAR81 vs low P-38J jabos and flew it yesterday with my squadmates - well, it was fun and the IAR performed very well http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Un tigan avea o iapa si cara cu ea la ceapa iha - hh - iha -hh .

(Sobolane tradu asta lui Tully)

The only sound related issues which I have ecountered with my Audigy2 are the rather peculiar ecco ( EAX extensions) in cockpit when I use guns.
If I disable extesions sound is not so good generaly so I guess I have to put up with it.

(Nu-i nimic, ma bucur ca a fost asa: m-am nascut in SUA, deci n-am avut o legatura directa cu tara pana in anii 90.

Ca sa nu se supere Tully: So that Tully doesn't get mad--Just recounting why my voice didn't make it into the voicepack (my accent ain't so hot, 'cuz I wasn't born in Romania). Anyhoo, this is the last time I'll use Romanian in this thread.

Frankyboy, from what I've been able to glean from various sources, you're right. Dan Antoniu's book, 'Vanatorul IAR-80 Istoria Unui Erour Necunoscut' (The IAR-80 Fighter: The History of an Unknown Hero) describes only 'doua lansatoare laterale' (two lateral hardpoints for bombs), not four. It's the best documentation about this aircraft that I've seen to date, so I have no reason to doubt the info. Perhaps Oleg will share with us where he obtained his information if someone asks nicely? There's so much inaccurate and conflicting data about this plane that it's not beyond the realm of the inconceivable that Antoniu is wrong and Oleg and his folks are right.

I haven't found any info about the availability/use of automatic prop pitch and radiator controls. It seems odd that they're there, given the plane's origins (PZL P.24, wing design from Macchi C.200, if I remember correctly). Anyone else know about these two items?
