i was recently in a place that reminded me of first civ architecture and especially the architecture from desmonds journey in revelations
I also find it a bit of a coincidence that this place is right across the street from where darby mcdevitt went to college
has anyone else here come across other places like this

And here I was thinking that I was the only one that was reminded of NGI when I saw the Grand Temple and the Observatory.. :)

National Gallery ftw.

While it may be a coincidence that McDevitt went to college nearby, I'm not sure if it makes much difference - surely he wouldn't have had an input into concept art/ the design of things? Then again he DID technically create the Observatory... so obviously he must have had some kind of image in his mind that he brought forward to the artists.

when i was first there i was looking around thinkin this place looks familiar.
darby could have been familiar with the place and mentioned it to the designers. This type of thing first started appearing in revelations and that was the first main game darby was working on. He was also heavily involved with black flag

The First Civilization Architecture is supposed to be quiet alien/other-worldly odd and a lot of it derives from 20th-late20th modernist architecture, which is the same style as these buildings in the photographs here. If you squint you'll find a lot of buildings looking like First Civ, and a lot of motifs in other cities, especially Le Corbusier or Mies van der Rohe, with design and fixtures by M. C. Escher and Charles Eames.

That's one reason why these structures look so alien when you visit it, because it's something vaguely modern but doesn't look modern in an era that is very much pre-modern.

As for Darby McDevitt, bear in mind that he served as a writer and the First Civ architecture motifs was designed before him, so I don't know how much input he himself had over the art directors. The first major First Civ structure we got to explore was the Grand Temple in AC3 and that had a lot of motifs similar to the Observatory.
