View Full Version : Getting Worried

Overall, the preview shots look very good, but the apparent lack of basic research is troubling. So far we have seen the Saratoga in PRE-WAR colors with Hellcats and Corsairs on the deck. This would make anyone with even a basic knowledge of the PTO cringe. If there are other U.S. carriers (ENTERPRISE?), that's great, but why suggest that this game won't even make an attempt at historical accuracy? If there are no other U.S. carriers, how could you? It would have made sense to use the Enterprise which fought in just about every major campaign of the Pacific War. But Sara in pre-war colors? Come on guys, that's embarassing. And I hope there will be some provision for the appropriate Naval aircraft for each phase of the war. Wildcats, Dauntlesses, TBF-1s and Devastors for the early war period. Hellcats, Corsairs, Helldivers and TBF-3s for the rest.

It IS a good question, is it not?

It seems, in the pursuit of pure, sugary eye-candy, anything is forfeit. Especially accurately modeled aircraft, torpedos, etc.

Will PF end up being the "Pearl Harbor" (Hollywood film) of flight sims? All sizzle and no steak? All special effects and packed with inaccuracies and lies? Sure looks like it so far, dunnit?

I'm not saying that to sound like a fanboy either. I too, have some concerns about what has been shown so far, but I'm not nearly as concerned about the Corsairs, Hellcats, and TBFs on a pre-war Lexington as I am about the rubber band arresting gear, or the obvious difficulty the planes are having getting airborne! This shows me that they have yet to implement any wind over the deck, and a basic lack of understanding of the dynamics of an arrested landing aboard a WWII carrier. I only hope that they are still wrestling with these issues, and will show us something a little more realistic in the near future. I am keeping the faith, only because of Oleg, and Luthier's track record so far. However, I reserve the right - ney, the obligation, to point out some of the shortcomings as I see them in each video, or update that is released! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/52.gif

a corsair worry,

without any kind of "lean head" mode, trying to look behind you will suck. the hell and wildcat won't be as bad because they don't have that hood thingy on the back of the canopy like the corsair does. i saw a hint of it in the corsair video when the pilot looks up at the flag.

limitaion of the game engine, i guess.

Its not that I am worried I too noticed the apparent lack of wind in a video I watched the other night with 3 Corsairs taking off. However the ship was sitting still. I did see a video of another plane trying to land on a moving deck and would be interested to know based on the beta stages (have seen it hinted that they are in beta 2 on the French Check6 site) where the wind effects are with the latest video of that plane landing on the pitching deck.

Oh no! This could mean that cockpit view is not so accurate, and different from real life for another reason -besides of 'mouse tracking'. And the 'Anti-WWV' league could have to admit than in real life it is easier to find and track a plane; and that hence, a few 'unrealistic' settings -such those arrows in the edges of screen- actually make it more real! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

Arrows switch for cockpit view -I hate WWV- NOW! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

This is far from a fanboi forum and your original post was - err - pretty dumb in light of the fact that these are DEVELOPMENT screenshots.

Razor - I too share your concerns. Inaccurate carrier physics would really suck in a Pacific War sim.

Here is my prediction;

The Good News = these issues will be fixed.
The Bad News = we will not see this sim released until January '05.

You're referring to the movies from France Simulation right?
They made a bit of a mistake as they had the planes take off from a stationary carrier - that's why they struggled. Everything works as expected when using moving carriers. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

My greatest worry is: are the carriers being modeled as authentic vessels, or are they simple airfields over static terrain in the shape of a carrier?

I've always wondered how were they to implement carriers in a engine not designed to have such kind of objects... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

To be honest - I couldn't do any intensive testing but I can tell you this...

In DF mode (it's lonely flying alone) I took-off from a stationary carrier and landed without too much trouble. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

In SP/ offline mode the AI struggles to take off and AI will not land on a stationary carrier in SP/ offline mode.

Just for a laugh I had an AI Betty take-off from a carrier (moving) the other night - it didn't have too much trouble either.

Anyway, looks like everything's going to be OK. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Extreme_One, are you at liberty to discuss any of the details of the beta that you have? It would be really helpful (just to satisfy our curiosity), to know such things as whether or not you can control the carrier's speed when putting it in the FMB. If so, what is the maximum speed allowable? Is it different between the IJN carrier and the Lexington?

Are there various loadouts for the Corsair? If so, can you get off a static Lexington with any of them (ie, in any configuration other than clean)?

In stormy weather conditions, is there a crosswind on the deck of the carrier as there is on the airfields in FB?

Does the canopy open on any of the a/c available in the beta, and if so, is there a higher seat position? If so, does that higher seat position come automatically when you open the canopy, or is it selectable like SHF F1?

Sorry for all these questions, but inquiring minds want to know! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif I'll understand completely if you are unable to answer these questions.

I would hope that the developers are keeping an eye on this forum to at least get an idea of what our impressions are, so far, of what we've seen up till now. After all, we are the customers, and they are doing all this in hopes that we will like it, and BUY it. And if, by chance, we have pointed something out that they've missed, or hadn't thought of, then we have done all of ourselves a big favor. They are smart enough to weed out those posts that are thoughtful and constructive from those that are just total BS.
