Supposedly - quicker roll and higher speed at the expense of a touch of turn rate.

But also, they look better. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

In game, I can't tell much difference really.

In game:
- Quicker roll rate, especially at high speeds
- Better maximum speed at low level as well as energy retention (you accelerate a bit faster as well)
- Loss of turn radius (a clipped Spit turns about as good as the best of the 109G crowd while the non-clipped has the edge)
- Loss of climb rate (less lift)

Most pilots flew with regular tips instead of clipped but a number of the tactical airforce bunch equipped them at varrying points in the war (for obvious reasons). It was fairly easy to swap between the two apparently so it wasn't too hard to switch.

I tend to prefer the clipped wing but I fly both.

Clipped are a lot less squirrely, easier to kill. A wise choice. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I thought its just quicker roll and loss of combat turn. Ill take a non clipped wing spit anyday over the clipped wing

The differance between the clipped and full span wing is mostly the roll rate with the clipped one rolling much faster, the change in turn rate was so small that it was insignificant same goes with the climb.

However at high alt the non clipped wing gave slightly more speed with the reverse being true at lower alt.

I thought one of them had less ammo then the other?

In game:
I always felt confident that the clipped wing has a less profile than the non-clipped wing since a wingtip explosion from a Mk-108 round would have your plane veering and that's a real bad thing to happen in a knife fight.

The main difference....Clipped wing is ugly...non clipped isn't..especially with those wing markings postioned right at the end of the wings!...ugh!...Its like taking a beuatiful car like an Aston Martin DB4 and fitting the wheels form a 1983 Ford Escort to it!!

I agree! Clipped spits just don't look right.

i believe it was supposed to increase roll rate and low altitude airspeed.

Haven't had any problems turning with anything in the sim, though i sure could use more 20mm cannon ammo.

uhhhhhhh..maybe A6m5's, but no spit can outturn an A6M2, not on this planet, at least...clipped or not clipped
quote:
Originally posted by dangar2_8:

From my experience, the order of online turning potential, based on equal pilots and equal Energy is:

1. I-153, J8A

2. I-16, B-239

3. Zero

4. La5FN/La7

5. Ki-84

6. Spitfire

7. Yak3

8. P39

9. 109-G2

10. P51

Your mileage may vary. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Not including the Go-229 and Me-163 which are great turners, but I usually have no problem out-turning a Go-229 in a Ki and as for that Me-163, that thing is just weird. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/blink.gif
