View Full Version : For the sake of enhanced realism wouldn't this be cool...?

Do you agree that the "radio chatter" is far too clean?
Surely in RL their would be loads of static, occasional interference and even complete radio silence.
Surely this wouldn't be too difficult to implement?

I've even considered "dirtying" the samples used...

CFS3 is really cool with some of the sounds. For example, often I hear a comrade tell me he's taking hits and then you hear static and an ominous static radio transmission as he's shot down and explodes. Very cool indeed.

If you're going to "dirty up" the transmissions, just be sure that it's not done too loudly because that blows it all away...

The reason I haven't done so is because you'd hear the "static" at exactly the same point each time that sample is triggered. That might be even worse than the current audio.

Oh. See I thought this would be about modeling dizzyness and then a sudden spew of vomit all over the instrument panel. But then I guess that wouldn't be cool.

If you have the mixing devices, you could resample the entire voiceovers and add a subtle loopable (ie. no obvious beginning or end) static into the mix. Hope that makes some sense. Basically all the transmissions would then contain static. You could then change the more urgent/tragic ones to have a more abrupt set of static waves....

Hmmmm... That deserves some thought, I like the idea!

WHAT'S NOT REALISTIC
is when they're saying "I'm hit, I'm bailing out" after they exploded.

And another thing, that's completely out of subject. I'd like to be able to play darts (shenmue style) with my fellow pilots at the base between the mission.

Steinberg Clean 4.0 would probably do a good job of modelling the effect your after. Or a music progran like Cubase.

Russian is already almost inunderstandable. I always look at the subs to get their message.

I use native languages because it sounds a lot more authentic, even though I understand little German.

The point is a good one, but if you think a minute you know why they didn't put in static and interference in the sound files. Because if they did, they'd be deluged by complaints from angry customers: "The sound is no good in this thing! It's got all this crackling noise and you can barely understand them!"

Actually I don't see why anyone would care whether they can understand the voices, since nothing they say ever makes any sense anyway. Either Major Govnovitch is yelling at you to stay on course when you're in the middle of a dogfight, or he's shouting out vectors that have absolutely nothing to do with anything and will get you hopelessly lost if you try to follow them. Or your wingies are shouting at you to watch your twelve o'clock while you're attacking an EAC, or you have to listen to them whining about how they're out of ammo, they're on fire and bailing out, who CARES?

And after you get to be the guy in charge, no matter what order you give their response will be, "Unable to comply," as they fly away and leave you alone with a dozen 109s. That or the ever-popular "Out of ammo, returning to base."

The voices are just for atmosphere, and since VVS planes generally didn't have working radios up till 1943 or so I just turn the damn thing off. But with the Lend-Lease planes that wouldn't be authentic so I set the voice volume down low enough that I can hear it as a sort of background noise but can't really understand it unless I listen closely.

And I also went into the sound files and deleted the most obnoxious ones - the "Shto za chort!" lines - so I don't have to struggle with the impulse to shoot the old fool down.

But if you don't understand the language, and I suppose not many people here know Russian (and even fewer Finnish) or even German, then I don't see the problem. Just turn off the subtitles and ignore the voices. They're never going to say anything of any value anyway.

I like the idea of editing the files to put in some static but I wouldn't have a clue how to go about it. If anybody does this successfully, I hope he'll make the results available to the rest of us.

GREAT points you make! The voices in IL2 make NO sense most of the time. When was the last time a vector was for you? This is definitely a poor point of FB.

Also, someone PLEASE change the foul curses the IL2 gunner uses? Any time I have to fly with that sh!thead I pray someone kills him for me! "What the hell"... Yah, what the hell buddy, shut the feck up already!

What i dont like is the recorded messages stuck together. When Four is shot down he'll say "This is four, I'M HIT!!! I'M HIT!!! I'M GOIN DOWN!!! NOBODY DUN GIVE ME NUTHIN!!!" (heheh). I mean, they're all calm, and then they're screaming for an ice creaming.

Yes, seems strange, but in real life you actually hear some very very cool people even when they are about to conduct an emergency landing. And the opposite also happens..

Simon, I have also replaced the Russian voices with English just for the campaign. I simply need to know when there are bandits spotted and when I'm cleared for landing. Most of the rest I could leave. If I could just memorize a few Russian sentences I could leave it in Russian. I suppose I could just play the files over and over and over.... /i/smilies/16x16_robot-very-happy.gif

If you want some authentic-sounding radio, check out some of the mods in Jane's WWII Fighters. Gets repetetive after a while, but sounds awesome.
