Hi everyone. Just wondering...could anyone suggest a good tactic to shoot down a Pe-8. Have tried to do it from above, behind and below(not a good idea) with B-239 but almost always ended up in trouble...that monster has a really formidable defensive armament...
and also... ive got il2fb ver 1.11 and the funny thing is...sometimes when i shoot down an enemy plane and it crashlands on seasurface and just stays floating there...that shouldnt happen, should it...does patch ver 1.2 correct this?

thanks for any info and help

Well, if you ever get the chance, attack head on spraying these areas: Cockpit and engines, these are what I find to be the easiest way to shred Pe-8s.

1.21, "splashed" enemies do float for about a minute or so before they blow up, at which point you'll get credit for the kill... if you're still alive and flying.

Let me guess.. you are flying the finnish campaign? I had the mission too. I couldn't complete it so, I started another campaign http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

About the floating planes: Planes could float for a little while some planes longer then others. But, FB doesn't take 'floatability' serious. Not that it ruins my gameplay, there are numerous little small details that make this game great, don't you think?

1 Judge not, that ye be not judged.
2 For with what judgment ye judge,
ye shall be judged: and with what
measure ye mete, it shall be measured
to you again.

As has been suggested, go for the cockpit and engines if you possibly can. Never approach a Pe-8 from the rear, it has [practically] even more firepower to aim at you from there than a B-17 does. That's enough to really, seriously ruin your day if it hits you straight in the engine.

Forward armament is a pair of ShKAS [or U-ShKAS?] guns in a very slow tracking turret. Make your attack nose-on with the bomber, and break - high - well before you run past the bomber. You are going to want to set your convergence fairly long [400m-500m] in the B-239 when you go bomber hunting. The two engine mounted .50s are what you want to take your shots with, if possible, since they suffer less from convergence issues than the inner wing guns.

Breaking high puts you largely out of the field of fire of the two 20mm turrets, and the tail turret can't track very far in the vertical - dorsal turret has limited tracking too . A pseudo-immelman reversal back around, putting you directly above the bomber, works well after the break. Climb to 1000m+ above the Pe-8 and then dive down on it as fast as you can, firing at either the cockpit or the engines, depending on which of these you went for on your head-on pass. Ideally, you are going to dive down so that you pass in front of the Pe-8s wing, rather than in front of the cockpit or behind the wings.

The B-239s .50s are one of the few good 'gunner killing' weapons in FB - it's very rare for any gunner to survive more than a few direct hits on its station from them. Unfortunately, the B-239 just isn't resilient enough to take the return fire you're in for from a Pe-8. Just stay away from its rear turrets altogether if at all possible. If you see the gunners tracers going by, break off and re-setup your attack from outside of their field of fire.

Finally - even if you do this perfectly right you're only going to have enough ammo for around 5 bombers at most - it may be possible to do more but I haven't managed it. If you have a high enough rank and high enough skilled wingmen, try ordering them back into formation with you, and dragging them into a head-on pass into the bombers.

edit: gah managed to completely bugger up which guns go where on a pe8 :>

My experience is try to aim at wings.. Wings seem to be the weak point of Pe-8
