Looks like one flight sim can get clouds right... Wonder when Il-2 will.

Shots are from an add-on to Combat Flight Simulater or something (not il2).

That is definetaly CF3 with the new He-111 addons. I know I have that game gathering dust right now but I still keep up with current happenings on the game to see if it will improve. IMHO, I think clouds like those would be a serious FPS hit on IL2, just look at CFS3, the graphics are nothing compared to IL2 because they put so much on unnecessary objects. Yeah the clouds are cool, I like them but to add that kind of stuff will drag the game down and make it boring. Maybe in the future the clouds would be like that on the a revamped engine (maybe BoB) but we'll just have to see. BTW, thats a nice screen shot. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

No, FB clouds are already "old" in that even my old Savage integrated motherboard video let me use
detailed clouds with no fps hits from the clouds.

My new ATI 9200 lets me use detailed clouds at extended range--ie...detailed clouds all the
way to the map horizon. And 9200 does this with no fps hit at all. FB clouds can be made like
3SFC clouds to challenge the newer 9800 Ultra and 5900 Pro video cards and this
will help extend the life of the sim.

I think the dudes point was if they could swipe MS clouds and put them in FB. Would not hurt 3CSF any, can't kill a dead bug.

I would rather have sweet planes and fps than nice, puffy clouds. Get real. Go play LOMAC and see what truly high detail clouds do to a sim, a sim with other high details (such as FB's planes). LOMAC has add-ons to turn cloud detail down so peeps can play it at acceptable fps. No thanks.

Well, LOMAC screwed up their cloud grafix. All Oleg needs for quick fix is to make his fast drawing clouds with the same number of detail but just larger distance between the details so we get bigger clouds and same fps. Still won't keep AI from seeing through clouds though. But as FB clouds are fixed map Features, even this idea won't work. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

The only thing seriously lacking with il2, fb and aep is full cloud cover. This can't be THAT hard can it? With todays vid cards and technology, at least make this a selectable option! The next thing that I would like to see (next sim) is storm fronts that start, and end. Getting ready for a mission, it is rainy. As you approach your target 100 miles away, the weather is sunny.

I happen to like FBs clouds... IMO the down low quality of the scenery in FB is so far and away ahead of anything MS does..... there is no contest. The clouds in FB are great..... I dont know what you guys are looking at...

Yea, the CFS clouds are nice, too bad all the ground objects suck. As far as LOMAC and IL2 I think the clouds are kewl, but like Mayern, I won't be truly satisfied until we get dynamic weather. (and not just dynamic weather effects)

we really need clouds. In real life, clouds were a bomber pilot's (and lonely fighter pilot's) best friend. I've actually used it online (was on a pacific map) where I hid from 3 marauding Spitfires for about 10 mins before the clouds ran out...then I was dead! lol .. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Otherwise....

I always thought CFS3's clouds were pretty impressive - their most useful purpose being that when you flew above them you couldn't so easily see the rubbish ground rendering below . . . http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/59.gif

Yough Bear, this is what P~51 pilots saw outside their cockpits when flying at 9km altitude, not just little white flak puffs way down at 2km http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

http://www.chitambo.com/clouds/cloudsimages/low/cb_cap_zaire_nov95.jpg
---> http://www.chitambo.com/clouds/

These clouds can be easily handled by 9800 Ultra and 5900 Pro video cards if the Devs use the right grafix routines

Look at FB contrails, I can have 50 planes in a tight dogfight all twisting contrails around each other and no fps hit, but a single dust cloud on takeoff drops fps below Zero. The Devs did the contrails right, the Devs totally botched their Choice of grafix routine for takeoff dust clouds. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_mad.gif

I agree.... It really is a matter of execution.

I believe it's totally possible to create CFS3 looking clouds in FB and not suffer a fps hit... -Just has to be implemented correctly and optimized for optimal performance.

There should, at the very least, be an option to have clouds similar to cfs3.

-Just pick up any book based on the ww2 airwar and the pilots accounts and you will notice that wheather and clouds structure\cover was an EXTREMLY influential part of how things played out during their missions. -IT would be nice if the same could be recreated here.

CFS3 clouds are good but when flying through they often become a flat plane or wall from some aspects. Not realistic. I actually like IL2FB clouds and when I put visibility as poor there are plenty of them. Also wonderful ground fog........more realistic that anything in CFS3. CFS3 wins in some areas: Ability to warp ahead, much reduced gun flashes, and I do like having addons with multi-engine bombers. But over all it just doesn't compare well with Il2FB.

CFS3's eye candy is what makes that game break down so much, if you had a nuclear reactor, it would run right

That is a Fault not a Feature.

redfella has a point, the clouds are what decided dogfights half the time. One would think those who want to warp to a dogfight (actually, to warp over AA in the way http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif ) would be interested in historical correct modding of clouds effect on dogfights. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I often make use of clouds when dogfighting online.

The only problem is that if your foes have their clouds set on "medium" while your setting is on "detailed", their clouds will be somewhat smaller and often they will be able to see you even if you think you are in a cloud.

I would like to see mre high cloud in FB though.
