That's great new's maddvmaxx.

I still recall firing up a P-38J-25-LO Blue Arrow's Allison engines in Ms Combat Flight Sim 2 as a favourite past-time even over playing the game. Crank 'em up. 3rd party add-on engine sounds were amazing. That was a while ago.

Now, I'm very pleased that Oleg and crew added Gibbage's nicely detailed P-38J & L to IL-2FB 2.0 AEP. Outstanding work guys!

Up until AEP, the P-51 was the coolest sounding fighter IMO. But the P-38 blows it out of the water. I just love its roar, especially when you use the F3 camera and get a doppler effect going.

I was sure from all the P38 posts from Gibbage that it was going to be sorta ufoish versus reality, but I gotta say it has turned out to be one of the most challenging and rewarding planes to fly. It must be one of the only planes that actually models compressability. Diving on a Ki, my Lightning actually nosed downward slightly by itself as my speed grew. It has gotta be one of the coolest planes in the game now. That plane's so fine I'd drink a whole tub of it's bathwater. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Anyway, hats off to Gibbage and Oleg, I raise my Gimlet to you guys!

it is in IMO the coolist looking plane ever. the only thing that comes close to me is the pby catalina. it would be a dream if we could fly that thing in FB. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I dunno... flying the Cat would only be good if you could get up (virtually) and walk around a bit.. you know stretch your legs, walk back to the waist gunner position.. BS with the radio guy..That bird is SLOW baby.. shooting touch n go's in the water is about the only cool thing you can do with it. That would be cool though.

Sometimes you even get that doppler effect in the cockpit. Awesome!

I also love the Cat. But what we need is a large Pacific Map, where you cna fly island hops in it. I loved to fly over the Palau Islands in CFS2. That would be a cool place for a Cat flight.

Heh, my LAGG-3 and Yak 3 seem to blow it up just fine.

Strange thing about the P-38J & L is that the 110 handles a lot better than they do. I can get more kills in a 110 and also a IL2!!! I have never flown a real one of course but I'd think they handled better than both the 110 and IL2 put together. Although it was a very large heavy plane. I am flying the J in a Russian campaign right now and it sucks at Eastern front style low altitude stuff. The AI 109s kill my buddies and I have to fight off the remaining 109s by myself. The P-51 also sucks in offline campaign play though. The AI always want to turn fight in everything.....oh well!!!! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif I guess the P-38 will only shine online, where you can use tactics that are appropriate. I really don't play online though.

Mortoma (or anyone else who can answer),

How are you flying a P-38 in a Russian campaign? I know there is some way in the DGEN folder or someplace to add planes that normally aren't available in the campaigns, but I have no idea how. Can anyone enlighten me?

thanks!

Go into the planesRUF.dat (RUssianFighter) or planesRUL.dat (RUssianLeningrad) file in the FB/DGen directory and add the plane you want to fly to the list. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
You can do it for any campaign with any plane, you just have to find the right file & put the abbreviation for the plane in correctly. Some people don't like to do this because it can be "non-historical". http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

Well, I don't think you can do it that way with the P-38s. The way I do it is I generate a camapign in any russian plane ( doesn't matter which one ) and then I change it to a P-38 in
FMB before I fly every mission. It's a pain but it works. I also do that with the P-51. I don't care about historical stuff, I'm a "what if" player. I just imagine the Russian aquired P-383, 51s via lend-lease. Even if that's far from reality. This way I don't have to buy BOE to do campaigns in planes otherwise not allowed in campaigns. I also do it for the He-162, I edit missions in a camapign I started in the Me-262.

mortoma

I take that back, I thought I had tried to put the P-38s in the dat files and it didn't work. But I was thinking about the He-162, which will not work that way. But as it is now, you can put any of the 4 P-51s and both the P-38s in the Russian Dat files and Dgen will generate campaign missions for them as if they were Russian or lend-lease. If you do it with the He-162 in the German PlanesDe*.dat files however, it won't work. It is one of the few now. You will have to edit in FMB if you want a career in the He-162. Or alternately, you can edit the .mis file ( in Wordpad )in your campaign folder and change the plane to a He-162. If you edit any of the Planes***.at files in the Dgen folder, make sure you use the correct Dgen name and that the plane is on the
proper side, red or blue. Here are all of the planes in the game. But note I list the non-flyables too. You must put them in the Dgen dat files exactly as spelled, underscores and all.

I've had the greatest fun using the P-38L in a high speed HVAR attack run...gosh we NEED HVAR's on P-51D's as well...that'd be great fun too. In any case...the P-38 is an excellent ground attack fighter, not quite as good as the Jug but its very fast, very smooth, handels great at high speeds, packs loads of firepower and once you're done on the target pull back and zoom up into the sky.

I can't fight fighter VS fighter effectively yet (still working on technique) but its a great plane to use in groups!!

I've done a few little FMB missions doing ground attack with the P38 and I love it, its gotta be my favorite plane in FB now.
