View Full Version : would this be possible for PF oleg "skins"

I was wondering if we can have the options to shutoff or enable 4 types of skin dls.

1024x1024 aircraft skins DL on/off
512x512 aircraft skin DL on/off
pilotskin DLs on/off
regiments and marking mats on/off

as a skinner who can spend 6-18hrs on one template from scratch. All servers having skin dls off online really makes me feel like skins are nothing but a waste of time.

A few people say we can see skins online if another user has the same skins in thier skin folder as well as thier cache with the same exact name while having skin dls off. I have tried this and never seen it work.

I know your busy but hopefully you will get to read this.

useful suggestion, leadspitter. it's right: if you have a skin (same name) in your folder, you will see the skin if someone other is using it. it works.

Im wondering does that have something to do with the pink aircraft? I seen it on the 190d and 109 before.

I also seen people say it wont work if the files have been edited even tho they have the same name.

foo.bar do you know if it has to be in the netcache as well as in the aircraft folder? or does it work just being in the aircraft folder.

I probally have about 6 gigs of skins and have never seen anyone use the ones i have online with skindls off

Im womndering if we will see a default skin slot to put the skin of your choice in for static aircraft.

Default skins are in .tga format and part of the model/material assemblage...user made are .bmp......no workie. Similar skins need to be in net cache but skin downloads need to be turned on to view, so you can can have the same skin in the cache but if downloads are off you will not see it. It use to be that turning skin downloads off just meant the skin was'nt displayed but still transferd. This was to be addressed but I am not sure whether it was or not (lead to alot of warp even when it DL was turned off). Similar skins dumped into the cache will not display either because I believe FB assigns the file a hash #. Which corresponds only to those that go through the transfer process. Perhaps you could match these numbers and name them accordingly before they are distributed to the public (il2skins). THis way folks could just dump into their cache. Problem then is that this is just to view it, to use the skin it would have to be in the appropiate folder. As I see it there is no current way around this until someone really sits down and figures out how these things get sent and hashed. Then you would be able to create skin packs.

I may be wrong about the transfer stuff as I tend to drink and fly http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif I agree though it seems like such a waste to have these skins not display.

Well lead that's the exact reason why i run a server with skindownload on... just have a little less player max... but on light and med maps it runs very smooth with 18 players. Maybe an option for more servers?

Official skin packs could be a way forward? Ubi has the hosting ability and many skins at IL2 skins are of excellent quality.

At least that way everyone has the same skins and are named the same but they still need to be loaded into memory every time someone used a different one but at least the network traffic won't be there.
