I read a post recently where someone was aking about the flight qualities of the old CFS2 zero
compared to the Il2 zero and this prompted me to dig out my copy and install it. Man how times have changed! The flight models are prehistoric! There was no feel to them at all. I did however enjoy the manual engine starts and the torque from the engine on take off. Some of the engine sounds were good as well. Anyway I thought I would try a few carrier landings for practice. With flight models this bad I should ace carrier landings when Pacific Fighters comes out! This was the game to have back in the day!

A speck of dirt on your windscreen could turn into an enemy fighter in the time it took to look round and back again. A little smear on your goggles might hide the plane that was coming in to kill you.

Yep. PF hopes made me install it again...just to tone down my eagerness...

Some things were Ok, something not. But it definally felt unfinished and rushed, compared to Il2. And it stututut..ters

However, I can't play it. No time free.

Man, it used to get right up me when I failed a campaign because my wingmen continually got their stupid b**ch a**es shot down http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_mad.gif

And if you managed to ditch your aircraft in one piece, you couldn't bail out http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_mad.gif http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_mad.gif

Yep, it was the best we had not so long ago, but quite frankly, I'm glad it's dead.

Thanks for the walk down memory lane, thoughhttp://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

And people complain about the AI we have now?
After I shot down four zeros single handed in my Wildcat I decided to come in for a landing.
Boom! All three of my wingmen followed me and flew into the ground. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/35.gif http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/35.gif http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/35.gif

Guys guys...not prehistoric enough. Aces of the Pacific. I have the original disks and manuals still (plus the poster with that really great artwork!). Unfortunately the disks don't work so great but you can still find flyable versions around...

Give that game a spin sometime! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I used the Wells flight models - 1% for addon planes. I bought a p38J-25-lo addon for the game and that was the main reason I kept it. Had a blast flying that thing. The originial flight models were gastly. The corsair flew like the zero was supposed to etc. etc.

I hated the ridiculous campaign objectives in CFS2. You could shoot down five enemy planes, but if you did not sink the destroyer, which was an additional objective, you failed the mission. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/crazy.gif Fail too many missions and bye-bye campaign. Talk about not having enough ammo to do it all.

Ha ha ha, there was a thread not so long time ago on SimOuthouse forums, where people who still play CFS2 were discussing the future of this sim when PF comes out. I myself, on the last pages of this thread, had a little "discussion" with a man proving that CFS2 is more realistic sim than FB. And... in some aspect, I have to agree with him (it was about realistic navigation and weather engine in MS product, compared to lack of it in FB). Anyway, it's always interesting to read what "competition" writes about us, especially when some opinions are not very objective. Just like here... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Yoy can find the discussion here:

P.S. - skip the first pages, you will find opinions about FB on nextr ones http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Now with the navigation and weather you have a very valid point. I also navigated by using a world map and it was very accurate indeed. This comes from the civilian FS series that MS was already a leader in. In fact when I first started simming with MS FS95 I used a gas station road map of Texas and I was never far off course. I have had all the MS FS series and I currently fly MS FS2004. If we had this type of weather in FB and PF it would be almost perfect. But I still have to say the IL2 series of sims are what other air combat sims are measured by.

Found the discs last night.

Did an install and fired it up.

FM's were like some weird roller coaster ride - you felt like you were on rails. Oh...and the Collision bubble was about 3 miles wide. After about an hour I wiped it off my HD - this time for good.

Finally, I had to laugh at the guy from Sim Outhouse who complained about "all those patched for FB" on one hand - and then crowed about all the wonderful add-ons for CFS2. He should look into a logics class.

Ah yes, AOP.

Great game at the time. I seem to remember it came out right after SWOTL...was a quantum leap ahead.
Brings back fond memories...I laugh: I used to have to use a boot-disk to get it to load as my 386 couldn't handle it under a regular start up.

Anyone remeber back a bit futhrer to Pacific Strike? lol.

http://www.ibiblio.org/GameBytes/issue20/greviews/ps1.gif

Here is a back in the day review http://www.ibiblio.org/GameBytes/issue20/greviews/pstrike.html

I particuarly like the first part: "Reviewer recommends: At least a 486DX/66+ mhz. In fact, I don't believe the machine has been built, that can run this game smoothly without pauses during flight as the digital FX is loaded." http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/mockface.gif

P.S. You can get a freeware copy of AOP here. (http://www.the-underdogs.org/downloadfile.php?file=games/a/acespacific/files/acespacific.zip&id=1858)

Yeah, but I miss CFS2 'normal' muzzle flashes...

The most ancient PTO sim I've flown is 'Battlehawks 1942' the first Lucasarts sim... before SWOTL and Their Finest Hour... Copyright 1988...

Ugh... Yuck... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

For those who want to play AOP but their disks just don't work, here are good news... It's abandonware now.

ho those good old days in cfs2, i always hit the deck so hard that my wheles asome time broken off, but always got hooked no matter what, in some ways cfs2 is better simulator... not in fm nor in dm, but for example in using the mission builder cfs2 and fb has no comparision, u could make those realy cool mission in cfs2 that could go 20 diferent ways as time passed, i liked the one return to base we are under atack! those trigger were always so usefull, if fb had triggers it would add a huge feature to the game... for example, if u dont destroy the recon plane before this time ur forces will come under atack in 15 minutes, kind like a spoter, realy cool, we must have trigger! i want triggers!
