Hi, I'm new to this game and flight sims in general, so maybe you guys can help.

I've been playing IL-2 Forgotten Battles in the campaign, I just started my second mission, but I have a question.

My engine seems to keep shutting off at random times. At the end of the first mission, I was circling the runway waiting for landing clearance and my engine just died and I had to land it in a field.

Second mission, I'm in the middle of a dog fight chasing a Bf-109 and it goes out again.

I have unlimited fuel turned on and a few other easier options since I'm new to this genre. I try turning the engine on again after it goes out, but it still doesn't come on.

Could any one help me out?

Are you flying an aircraft with gravity feed fuel? I-16, I153, Hurricane Mk.I? Are you accidently hitting the engine key "I"?

Oh also -- I haven't sustained damage so that's probably not it either.

http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gifno worries, always good to help a n00b. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif The I-16 and the planes listed above have a gravity feed engine, if you pull negative Gs, pushing the stick forwar, the engine gets starved of fuel and it will cut off. To avoid this dont push the stick forward to dive or fly upside down for too long. If you want to dive in a I-16(or the other planes listed above) rull upside down and pull back the stick to dive. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

If you point your nose downward to rapidly in I-16's J8's Hurri's and CR 42's it starves the carburator of fuel and the engine dies.

..............................
I always have just enough fuel to arrive at the scene of my crash.

Thanks guys. I'll try not doing the aforementioned things and see how that helps!

Thanks everyone. That was definately my problem, I started using the rudder while turning to get me to fly down instead of pointing the nose down and that fixed it.

Shot down 5 Bf-109's too! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

now you know why in the old war movies all those squadrons of hurricanes and early spitfires banked into a dive rather than just nosing down http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

and you thought it was just because it looked cool http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Careful. In turbulent wind you can get bounced around and your engine cuts off with the turbulent induced negative gee.

Just restart engine, but for I~16, I~153, CR.42, and G.50, you must have some airspeed before you can restart...about ~200km/hr.

Also, experiement. Try pushing stick forward and watch engine guages dance. If they goto Zero, you must restart. This makes these old planes more challenging and Fun.

Heheh..I remember watching quite a few dogfghts unfold above me after stalling my I-16 enging and sitting the mission out in the middle of some field. You can't get that bugger restarted if you're not at an airfield, either.

Let me tell you, pushing that big thing back to the airbase was no fun at all.. Not to mention the ribbing I got when I finally arrived... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

If you have the airspeed, or altitude to trade for speed, you can restart these planes. Just don't lose engine power while at low altitude and low airspeed, especially over forest terrain.

That is not the primary reason. Pushing negtative G to dive is a very unpleasant feeling for the pilot, causing nausia and "redout". It's also bad for the airframe, in that all a/c are stressed for positive G and have very much lower stress tolerance for negative G's.

I wouldn't join any club that would have ME as member!

Correct me if I wrong, but I think you can add P.11 to the list now

Very useful information from everyone.

Thanks for the warm welcome, too! I'm sure I'll be back to ask more questions!
