View Full Version : The Forgotten Bomber?

By that I mean the B-24 Liberator. The most mass-produced US warplane in history with something like 18,000 examples made, this bomber gave good service to the USAAF in the Pacific theater, replacing the early B-17 models that were in use there, giving yeoman service before being replaced late in the war by the B-29 Super Fortress.

Although less famous, less durable, and not as easy to fly as the B-17 Flying Fortress, the B-24 Liberator flew farther, faster, and carrying more bombs than the B-17. I really hope this forgotten four-engine bomber is modeled at least as an AI plane in Pacific Fighters.

I have a good feeling many others feel the same way. A decent link telling some basic information about it here for those who don't know of the plane I speak of.

Yep... it's a must have. At least as AI. Haven't heard anything about a flyable so I guess it wont make it http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif although this is a plane that would be doable.. Shouldn't be too hard getting info on the Liberator, right?

Maybe in a addonpatch http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I'd say under appreciated rather than forgotten.

It gets it's dues in decent books, and i'm sure everyone here knows it was an execeptional aircraft.

But the B17 is the one that is known by people in general, rather than just aviation enthusiasts.

I wonder what provokes such a question http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif. Given the stuff we already got in FB, I would be actually pretty amazed if B-24 was not flyable in PF.

I'm fairly sure the Lib will be in PF. It would be pretty stupid if it wasn't and a massive oversight on the part of the devs. I think the real question is if it'll be flyable or not. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Liberator and PB4Y Privateer are both being worked on as far as I am aware. Luthier told a guy on these boards around January or February not to model the PB4Y as he had someone else doing it.

Whether it will be flyable, I have no idea, but at least the navalised version will be in (unless it was ditched http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif ), and I would expect the Air Force version also.

whit ye looking at, ya big jessie?!?!

Something makes me very, very confident that at the very least B-17, B-24, B-25 and B-29 will be flyable among the bombers. There's plenty of reference available, plus the entire American crowd would be highly pissed if even one of those doesn't make the flyable list http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

My Grandfather flew 56 missions in the Pacific as a B-24 pilot. He is still around and very lucid. I am sure I can milk him for any documents, anecdotes, etc. that may be of value for the developers or skinners.

Considering that I heard from an official source that there was going to be a strong emphasis on bombing, it will be in there.

British bombing whiners might get a chance to fly their stuff if, at some point (maybe as an add-on) a "Tiger Force" scenario is done. The TF was a major British commitment to the Pacific theater that was rendered unnecessary by the atomic bomb. Flying in the TF would not only necessitate Lancasters, but also the Lincoln, the Lancaster's more advanced kin. I'd sign up.

Well I'd be happy as a five year old with a new pair of shoes if that's true. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

I sure hope we get the "Lanc" eventually. Most likely an add-on for BoB the way things are going. They can't leave the Grand Slam carrying beast out forever!

B-24s attacked at mast height in the PTO, just like B-25s. They strafed, too (with the turret guns). I just got all 8 IMPACT volumes... I will be posting pics of said strafing B-25s and skip bombing, too.

B-24 came in too low, and dropped while pulling up and missed. The B-24 picture did NOT just drop bombs on that ship, that's a different bomber.

This looks like a barge, Navy Type A, or type G. It was sunk by B-24 gunners (nose, ball, and tail are the obvious choices).

My friend Emily's grandfather flew Liberators. She briefly mentioned it but I didn't ask where I'll have to ask her next time I see her.

You forgot one of the most important ones, the Vickers Wellington.

I'd rather see a Mosquito over a hampden.

The anti shipping version of the Wellington would be nice. Vickers Wsomething. Had a dorsal turret.

In terms of forgotten aircraft of WW2 with large production runs the Anson might be one. Bit of a useless plane for a comabt sim, but something like 8,000 plus built up to the early 1950s.
