Hi, I'm beginning to play on IL2 sturmovik , and was flying before on EAW... and I'm obliged to compare the two...
IL2 is really good on graphics , and flight models and AI, sure, but there's still some things which give interest to EAW... just some little things , who have a grand importance for me...
-the in game missings of IL2:
*the chase view ain't stay stuck to the plane when moving up or down... would be nice to fix It , like in an arcade game...(and those who loves really just have to not use this...) it could be usefull to attack ground targets...
*i regret the number of planes avaible in the game , at the same time... EAW is stilll the best for this... but i know It's not possible, or my pc will really feel slow... , and i'm sure the'll be more planes (full bombers crew maybe) in BoB.
*the map displayed during the game is nice on the right corner , and allow to play i the same time , but i never know where i am in Russia...(a full screen map could be added in more???)

for the non in game things... EAW was really nice in the mission's preparation , with a briefing... and then you could choose when got a suffisent grade who will fly in wich section, what bullet to use, and bombs..;(Ilé did it too). It was adding something more to the game , which make that when you begin a campaign, you feel more in the war... you have the same pilots around you , some of them disappear, new ones arrives... you can follow this (their victories, planes broken... new planes avaible for your squd...).
Simulators should give more importance to such things , cuz it wouldn't be so hard to do.
when you ends up a mission in Il2 , you only have a display of victories (that doesn't indicate the type of plane shot down... while shouting a fiesler storch is not the same than a bf 109 emil...) and the IL2 report only gives the total victories and losses for a full campaign , then after your 2nd fly , you have to remember how many planes you'd shooted the last ime and deduct from the displayed number to know If you'r target had come back home or really crashed...
Hope ya'll understand me ! and that other people will think in the same way , cuz air wars was not only played on the air... and this is a great team work too...
I hope the interface of BoB will include more things like that... to give more immersive campaigns...

I agree with you that the old EAW had some very nice features (especially the large bomber formations) I could add such things as the horizon not turning into a light blue wall at high altitudes, or the AI which permitted withdrawal from the fight, typically in a fight og some 36 a/c the loss would be around 5-10 downed and around the same damaged. In IL2 the fight almost always end with one side being totally whiped out!
Most of these features could be done in this sim as well, with the exeption of the large number of planes (just make a mission with a formation of 36 B-17s and you'll see what I mean http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/35.gif)
Don't get me wrong: I'm not whining at all, IL2/FB is the best CFS ever, but it would be nice to have it ´best other sims in the aspects where it's still inferior. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/mockface.gif

>"Flatspin", what is that supposed to mean? This aircraft is entirely spin-proof!<

AEP AI is improved somewhat. Now they will withdraw, or attempt to. And yes, I wish something could be done with the high alt. scenery. Probably won't be fixed. Next sim maybe.

Just to add another milestone to comparation... I have a dream... FB with a mission briefing and debriefing in Red Baron 2 style...
This could create something really great.

One Question: Do you have IL2 or IL2 FB?
The FB(Forgotten Battles) campaign has the pilots name in your squad, keeps track of them, and also keeps track of what plane you shot down. There can always be improvements in any game. I still find things to this day that add to the immersion and overall atmoshpere of this game.

concerning the formation size i can not agree.

eaw was much more unrealistic because in the western theater the formations were much bigger. i mean it was mainly a strategic air war. so a number of 36 b17 (as maximum in eaw) ould never have dared to enter germany without escort. even larger formations were in big trouble (remember both schweinfurt raids). therefore bomber formations had at least 100 and more planes, not talking about later raids with 1000 bombers and some 1500 fighter escorts. compared to this, the sky in eaw was really empty.

on the other side: air war in the east was not strategic but tactical. small bomber formations with small fighter escorts (except a few bigger raids). this is shown in il2. so proportionally il2 is much more realistic if we are talking about formation size.

map size is imo the same problem. since eastern air war was mainly tactical we only need tactical maps.

what i really miss in il2 is a dynamic combat environment like we had e.g. in falcon 4.0. whenever you leave the flight path in il2 you feel very lonely. this is very unrealistic because in reality there were much more targets than bombs. most of the time the pilots had to choose what target could be most valueable to hit. also the frontline itself is really dead in il2.

in my opinion a good combat flight sim has to be a compromise between flight physics, air combat and air/ground environment. In il2 the flight physics are outstanding, air combat is good and environment is simply not present. therefore i always miss the real 'war feeling' as i had it in f4.0.

i hope this will be better in BoB although i know that it is very hard to create a real battle environment.
