Using a Logitech wireless gamepad and just got to the first place with spikes coming out of the floor and the hints tells me to walk slowly over traps. However since you cannot set a "walk toggle" for a gamepad and walking as slowly as I can with the analog controller doesn't do anything but getting me impaled, what did you people with gamepads do in these situations?

Go into your gamepad profile config and map the desired button to 'shift' or whatever your keyboard button is for walk toggle.

With my gamepad I am forced to walk all the time and can't run.
