View Full Version : What was wrong with AC4's music?

So after reading the AC: Unity soundtrack thread, I've noticed that many people seem to dislike the music in AC 4. I want to know what they found wrong in it. I thought it was pretty catchy and had some decent tracks, even though too much of the soundtrack sounded similar.

Nothing wrong with it. It certainly did its job of sounding pirate-y.

The moosic IMO (especially the main theme) isn't feels provoking like AC2's or ACR's and isn't super pumping like AC3's or ACL's either.

Nothing wrong with it IMO. :)

These are my favorite songs from the Soundtrack:

The only notable song from ACIV to me was The Parting Glass.

And I'm not sure that even counts.

I guess it's because they miss Jesper Kyds style of music or just not to their personnel tastes etc.

Also as people are posting some of their favorites from AC4, here's mine. The only way to here this is by playing the Havana multiplayer map, so some of you might have missed this one:

IMO ACIV has a brilliant soundtrack. Some beautiful ambient music and incredibly catchy and memorable pirate-y tunes.

Nothing but I don't want to hear the obvious pirate sound in Paris.

I definitely don't want the high energy cello sounds in AC Unity, but I feel they could take some hints from the soft ambient music. Some of it is really good, and the instrumentation is amazing, like in the Nassau Kingston ambient music posted in this thread.

Aye but what I'm hearing is the high energy stuff and it's like ermageeeeeeeerd nooooooo!

Paris should be calmer, more mysterious, more dangerous.

I found nothing wrong with it. Personally, it's one of the best in the series. Even went out of my way to get the soundtrack. :p

I love that track too. :)

I thought the soundtrack in AC4 was good. It really captured the atmosphere of that era and it sounded Pirate-y.

The Shanties were amazing. I have the album and listen to them every once in a while, but I think the general soundtrack didn’t have any iconic tracks that stood out like Earth and Ezio’s Family from ACII OST or The Brotherhood Escapes and Apple Chamber from AC:B OST or the iconic Assassin’s Creed Theme from AC:R along with the breathtaking The Revelation and Labored and Lost from the same album.

I really wish they bring decent composers who really know what they’re doing and for what game they’re doing it, because I can bring the best singer or musician and still might not make something that matches the franchise’s atmosphere.

To me it represents a return to form, after the immensely disappointing AC3.

Good for the game! But terrible for unity! It was good but overall it isn't as good as some of the others... and I think people are just annoyed that Sarah's music in ACU is nearly exactly the same...

This, this a 100 times THIS!

There's nothing bad about the soundtrack perse, it's just incredibly forgettable to me. I don't really get any feilling from it at all, I mean I listen to Kyd and Balfe's tracks for AC alot when I am working on projects. But Tyler's tracks I don't listen to at all.

The only songs I remember at this very moment is the main theme, the one track that sounds alot like the PotC theme and The Parting Glass if that counts.

I was hoping that for Unity we could get some really intense, but at the same time ambient and haunting tracks, but no from what we have heard so far it's even worse (and even more forgettable).

That's exactly the problem... Is pirate themed **** all she knows how to do?

What's wrong with it? Nothing at all. There's a lot of music here to love: the main theme, the ambient music, the tavern songs and the shanties--well except Sailboat Malarkey. Ugh! I tried to avoid collecting it in Kingston last time through, but I ran into it anyway.

Personally, I loved AC IV´s soundtrack, not as memorable as AC I and AC II, but pretty good nonetheless.

Best part of the game.

I don't understand how people can say AC4's soundtrack was nothing but "pirate" music.

To me it was the best soundtrack since Jesper left, maybe even better than ACR. ACR and AC3 had a bunch of bombastic, forgettable cut scene tracks that were too movie-like for my tastes. AC4 had plenty of those too, sure, but there was just as much if not more soft ambient music to balance out the tone. "Into the Jungle" is about as assassin-y as you can get, "The Spanish Empire" captures a sense of place and time as well as any of Jesper's Renaissance-themed melodies and "Modernity" is a nice throwback to the electronic sound Jesper was known for.

This.

Then again, the composer Brian Tyler has a knack for making forgettable tracks. Battle LA, Modern Warfare 3, and even Iron Man 3. I never found his stuff to be remarkable.

Give me Hans Zimmer's piraty music any day.

I listened to a bit of it from Pirates of the Carribean: At World's End and honestly, I thought it was too bombastic for my tastes. Some parts had a nice jaunty feel to them though.

Nothing IMO. Brilliant in fact...specially the shanties. Also find it amazing how the MP soundtracks are so catchy and so latino in its elements. Makes the gameplay really enjoyable (unless you get stunned and killed near a bench/Stealth Poisoned) and amongst the best of the whole OST.

Like this one very much

I think Tyler's and et al made pretty top notch stuff even compared to the older games. Maybe it's cause it's the most recent game we've played, and it's still fresh on our minds, but so far I remember my fav AC4 tracks just as clearly as my fav songs from the previous games. And out of all the games I find the AC4 infliltration/stealth music to be the most memorable. I guess some of the tracks felt like 2-3 snippets that were made for several cutscenes and stitched together (like that "over the horizon" song), but they're still decent. The short snippet that plays when Edward and Stede are on the schooner and talking to each other at the beginning of the game really sent lots of chills down my spine and through my skin. Too bad it only lasts around half a minute.

Fav AC4 mp track is this:

That wasn't a favorite either. But Sailboat Malarkey will have me pushing Right on the D-pad quicker than I can say "that blows".

Favorites would be along the lines of Randy Dandy (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTXe1ZhJ25o) and Drunken Sailor (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q-O-78QLLWg), because this type of singing feels the most right. Drunken Sailor in particular has been used in the past, as far back as the movie The Crimson Pirate (1952) at least. Different lyrics to it (referring to whalers instead of sailors) can be found in Dishonored, and some of the city-watch guards will whistle the tune sometimes. Haha! I love most of them regardless, even one as out of place as Cheerly Man (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jCUNJhPCuoQ). This one should have been in Freedom Cry.

^ This. Although I have to disagree with ACIII partly being too much. I love the first ACs and their soundtracks because it fitted the Renaissance and Constantinople setting so well and it was so calm and chilling most of the time. But ACIII and ACIV both have incredible soundtracks and probably are quite at top of the list for game soundtracks. Just perfect masterpieces.

I agree, AC:3's soundtrack was perfect. It matched the setting and complimented the powerful story so well. The main theme, itself, is my favorite of the franchise.
