"Assassin's Creed (http://www.gamespot.com/assassins-creed-2007/) games have often been noted for their large crowds of AI-controlled characters and their responsiveness to events. But they've also been limited by the technology of the PlayStation 3 (http://www.gamespot.com/ps3/) and Xbox 360 (http://www.gamespot.com/xbox-360/). With the upcoming Assassin's Creed Unity (http://www.gamespot.com/assassins-creed-unity/) only for Xbox One (http://www.gamespot.com/xbox-one/), PlayStation 4 (http://www.gamespot.com/ps4/), and PC (http://www.gamespot.com/pc/), however, developer Ubisoft promises that crowds will be much, much larger.

As reported by Game Informer (http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2014/08/05/september-cover-reveal-assassins-creed-rogue-unity.aspx) in its September issue, crowds in Unity will reach upwards of 30,000 people, meaning that you will be able to look at, move through, and interact with a group the size of a small town. According to the story, "Couples hold hands, arguments occur, and fights break out. Ubisoft says it can have up to 30,000 people in a crowd."

These improved crowds aim to help fill out and make an engaging world, but the developer is also changing the way you play. Ubisoft promises that it is overhauling character customization to include gameplay perks, as well. According to the story, you'll accumulate skill points as rewards for completing tasks and activities. You can then use these to level up your navigation, stealth, or combat skills.

One of the most heavily criticized parts of past Assassin's Creed games was the inevitable inclusion of follow missions, in which you immediately fail and have to restart if you are detected. Ubisoft has finally changed these missions to make them more dynamic, and now objectives shift as you do different things. If you get spotted by a guard you're following, for example, the guard will run away and you'll have the opportunity to chase him down. If he dies, you can loot his body for information, but more guards may appear as the result of his death.

Recently, Ubisoft stated that it wants the main character, Arno, to feel like a real person (http://www.gamespot.com/articles/assassins-creed-unitys-hero-is-not-an-action-movie/1100-6421416/), not a "grizzled badass." The company also released a new trailer showcasing Elise (http://www.gamespot.com/articles/following-e3-controversy-new-assassins-creed-unity/1100-6421377/), a female Templar whom Arno is romantically involved with.
Yesterday, Assassin's Creed Rogue (http://www.gamespot.com/assassins-creed-rogue/) was announced for Xbox 360 and PS3, which expands on the events of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag (http://www.gamespot.com/articles/assassins-creed-rogue-doesnt-have-multiplayer-tons/1100-6421536/). It's unknown if any of these improvements going into Unity will appear in Rogue, especially since Ubisoft has said Unity "can't be done" (http://www.gamespot.com/articles/e3-2014-assassin-s-creed-unity-can-t-be-done-on-xbox-360-ps3/1100-6420448/) on last-gen systems.
Assassin's Creed Unity launches on October 28 for Xbox One, PS4, and PC. Are there any other parts of Assassin's Creed that you want to see changed in Unity? Let us know in the comments!"

Now Im confused. As at E3 it was 5000... that number has now x6'd itself.

And whilst apparently bigger is better, what do you guys think will happen to the AI? I already noticed in the E3 demo that the crowds have dumb AI and do the same animation loops.

Hope my PS4 won't turn into a jet playing this game.

But it's awesome to see what they are able to bring to screen with the new hardware.

Something I have noticed is that there is a ALOT of flickering and movement on screen on the console versions. And yes the e3 versions were xbox one stats because it was at 30 fps, not to mentioned that it was confirmed that Witcher 3..a PC centric game..was on xbox one (No Nvidia fur effects) so if they didn't do it on PC then Ubi definitely didn't do PC stats.

I think the console versions will have quite a bit of flickering to compensate for the massive amount of information on screen.

I dont think one will be able to interact with those NPC´s -ACIII´s 2000 on screen anybody?- but may be there will a battle or something like that.

EDIT: I swear I remember somebody saying those E3 demos were played in PC´s with similar power to that of the Xbox one.

I'll enjoy shooting a gun in the air while watching them all cause a riot amongst themselves as I watch from the rooftops.

Didn't they say at E3 that these massive crowds were randomly generated or something?

It was already mentioned in part 2 of IGN's making of series.

Alessia Laidacker said that 30,000 NPCs are loaded onto the map, but 5000 are visible on screen at one time.

Im not watching that making of series due to what I consider spoilers.

That's a lot of people, i wonder if they will achieve the 1080p 60fps they claimed they wanted to achieve.

They're going to keep adding people until Paris explodes with sweaty angry frenchies until we start parkouring on people.

All that said, there's probably a cheat that adds a crazy ton of people.

Only 5,000 are visible on the screen.

There we go!

5,000 is the number guys....which means in-game...around 2,000

And 2,000...IMO..is an achievement by any standard.

So many characters on screen at once is an impressive feat, too bad they are all animated horrenously. Seriously Ubi, fix your animations! They have not been acceptable since 2010 (for the NPCs of course).

If you cant see the other 25,000 why dont they jusy say they have 1,000,000 NPCS but they are invisible?

I doubt we'll ever actually see 5000 people on screen at the same time, but what the statement means is that 5000 can be actively processed at the same time (engine supporting up to 5000 on screen is a very simple to explain way of saying that), and they would have to be, seeing as like everything a few blocks around the main character would have to be processed (even when they're not visible, so there would be no bugs or anything when they get into our line of sight).

True...to add to this..

Its very simply actually - Space

Take 12 people in a mid sized house...it'll look a lil packed. Take 30..it gets crowded. Take them out on the streets....its a decent density for an urban environment. Ramp it up to a 50-60...thats a lively city right there.

Urban areas are tightly packed....if the game manages around 100 NPCs at all times....its going to look DENSE. The 5,000 magic number is probably being pulled from the huge public execution like scenarios...and even then 5,000 is a bit of a stretch....they simply can't fit into that area.

I wouldn't worry about NPC counts in Unity....I believe its covered. Paris will be an awesome urban, assassin playground.

The other 25,000 NPCs are still there, they just aren't visible. They'll probably become visible once you walk into a certain range of them. It's so that they don't have to actually load the textures.
