Hi all.
I thought with higher realism settings it would be cool to have a NO-auto-tracking periscope!
Any chance to see this?

Cheers

The SH3 CD pack could also include a pot of propeller shaft grease to put on our hands whilst we play...only joking.

I'm sure that on Expert level or 100% realism that there will be many manual settings etc we will have to wait and see. I dont know if I like your suggestion though. interesting to see what others think.

What do you mean with ‚"Ěauto tracking periscope‚"Ě? Does the periscope rotate itself?

In SHII one could lock on a target and the guns or scope would keep it in sight automatically.

allways found that feature more confusing than helpfull lol..so never used it at any realism setting ....kept forgetting i had the view locked and thought the target ship was dead ahead all the time...lol http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

i must say that although yu could say in theory this was aaan arcade type feature...i'd very much like the option to instruct the sonar man to focus on a specific sonar contact so i could have constant up-dates on the posittion of a selected contact...having said that i'm sure this wouldnt be an unnecesarily arcade option...as it would have pretty nromal to if possible ask the sonar operator to let me know the position of the nearest escort (allways taken that he was able to tell one contact from another?)

would be a great atmospheric effect to have "das boot" type contact reports given without having to leave the control room..

ie
"closer"
"fading"
"coming to port" etc..

well i'd enjoy it!!

what about at 100% realisim not having the option to switch to auto tdc????

To be more specific;

I always found the option to track my target automaticly - was nice and handy.

But I think perhaps we can have some little IMMERSIVE extra workload for the player. Id wouldnt take too much time to code, no? And perhaps we can have it linked to the automatic TDC in a special way:

Say, if you don't track your target manually (what you had to do as a Kaleun) the "automatic TDC" can't update its readings! - and you get no shot solution ???
So we can have the automatic TDC - but we have more to do then just sitting and drinking beer until the damn progy knows where and when to shoot http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

That was what I thought.

Thanks for your opinions!

PS. no autom. TDC on 100%
is fine for me:

IF THE DAMN MANUAL EXPLAINS THE TDC!

There are many things to vbe implemented to have a good realism level.......

Many of them are about periscope.....

No red triangle.......

No "autotracking".....

But the most important is a real range mesurement method.......

Here We NEED, the real range meter method......... and we NEDD a precise bearing Chart

I can not found real information about real german periscopes, but I read they was mounted with Stadimeter to mesure mast head height angle, and may be with a double image telemeter....... may be one of them according the age......

Precise bearing charts........

In some pictures is posible to see a very big diameter Baring Chart at top of the periscope, very big in diameter, to be able to take bearing to target with high precision..........

To have reality a Wizard Weel is NEEDED.

American periscopes has it at front of them..... I think so germans has it for hands......

Ships mut to be visible at real range, and mas must be visible at real range..... for those may be the mast must to be over modelated in diameters, if not they do not appears or flicks as in SH2........

Earth must to be NOT PLAIN..... smoke must to be visible so early than ships........

Rudder, Dive planes, and ballast tanks must to be manually controled.

Manual thermal layer determination........

DDs AI must to credible, and its lethality must to be real as in real life......

Their behavior must to be random, just as CB DES5 V3 Mod for SH2.

DDs capabilities to kill a sub must to be historical......

Depth Charges lethal radius and damage capability and sub hull resistance must to be real......

Silent running must to be an advantage, not a disadvantage.........

When on silent running you must to be hard to detect, in SH2, the best way to evade DDs is to put Flank speed and go at side of their course quickly....... to stay quickly out of their scanning area.........

Thermal layer must to be an advantage...... you must to be hard to be detected under the thermal layer........

You must to be more easy to detect when your periscope is up, and hard to detect when submerged and deep.......[CB DES5 V3 obtain it very weel in SH2].

Of course......... an Easy Mode must to be present to not scare begginers.......

And a Unreally Hard Mode ...may be present for Aces.......

thanks for attention.........regards, Red.

Hi all, first post http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Actually, was it not common practice to let a crewman aid the captain by orienting the periscope to specific contacts? I mean, that way the captain could keep to the eyepiece while the crewman would read out bearings and turn the scope to known contacts on demand (the captain did fine-adjustments, of course). I always thought auto-tracking was meant to emulate that behaviour. Or am I mistaken?

With the greatly improved graphics, we should be able to use Range Estimation as outlined in the Uboat Commanders Handbook. In fact, they should have a range estimation exercise, as part of the training scenarios.

Perhaps instead of having Training Mission 1,2, and 3 like in former sims, they will have a more interactive sub school to orient us to the boats (and I hope they have more than 1 interior model) and the sim features.
