I know that there have been videos with parts of AC3 target gameplay footage before, but never has there been the full version. I hope Ubisoft doesn't mind me uploading this (especially considering quite a while has passed since this footage was shown at a conference), fans are very interested in this kind of thing and would appreciate if it stays up for their enjoyment :D Here's the video.

I hate it when the target gameplay looks 10 times as awesome as the final product...
As much as I admire AC3, this is what I wanted to play.

Yeah. Realistically though, I think we all knew it could never have been as good as this. Just wishful thinking.

Dat ambiance though  I'm really sad the music and lighting effects never made it in.

Man, as said I really do love the atmosphere in this target video, the lighting is absolutely beautiful (espcially at the beginning). The random events will be sorely missed as they look to have added more meat and variety to the game.

The HUD and interface are a BILLION times better than in the final and Connor's outfit here is so much better than his final. It's a shame this video's quality is really bad.

Really glad they didn't go with that outfit for Connor though, it just doesn't look good.

Wow. so cool. Not too sure about the scalping at the end though...
The combat looked much better and it was cool how those wolves came in to kill the target.

Did anyone else think that guy Connor spoke to in the camp was Haytham? He looked a lot like the concept art of Haytham with his hair down (which I think looks a lot better);

Wow, interesting find, if that is Haytham he seems to have had a different voice at some point (or maybe it was a placeholder).

I think it is him, he's got the tricorn, the coat, the long dark hair and the long red scarf as well.

I will just quote Haytham:
"I will not weep and wonder what it might have been... I 'm sure you understand..."

The Connor's moves are better in that gameplay.Everything is more realistic but the characters are a bit unrealistic.I liked the slow motion aiming and the sound of the shoting

It was placeholder, like everything in the footage pretty much. Actors for characters weren't chosen at that point of pre-production yet.

It actually annoys me when I watch this video as it just looks downright incredible. Such a shame the real game wasn't like this.

I see a lot of 'if only the actual game was like this', but... it kinda is, really. With the exception of a few things like jumping on floating corpses, scalping, and random occurring battles, everything from the target footage is in the game.

I think the final game did a great job for what was achievebale on last gen.

Goddamm, that looks incredible. The atmosphere, the lighting, the liveliness, It's everything Assassin's Creed 3 should have been. It's painfully obvious that it would've been impossible to bring all of that to fruition when you consider the limitations of the dated hardware the developers were confined to. But if they captured the essence and vibe of that footage, and made the final product look at least half as good, AC3 would have been an infinitely better game.

I feel the same kind of disappointment, resentment and frustration whenever I rewatch the reveal trailer.

Should also be noted it's been said the devs thought xone/ps4 would be out before release of ac3. when they started out making the game.

What's creepy is that I was wondering about this video this morning... Anyway, I agree that this footage did have an awful lot of unbelievably awesome bells and whstles attached (e.g. Connor raising his arms as children run by), though I wish they'd found ome way to work in the combat shown here (and the moves). Other than that, glad they changed the outfit, and I'm sure the slowdown would have gotten annoying over time, so kudos to Ubisoft for removing that. I hope that naturalistic movement makes it into the next games at least.

Awesome find dude, finally got to see the whole thing. Tis a shame it all didn't end up in the final release of the product.

Although they did a bad job getting it into the final product, I wouldn't say they did a terrific job either. And I'm glad they changed the outfit, it looked weird to me. Everything else looked badass.

Maybe they'll put those missing features in a future game? Who knows... they did say they didn't have enough time to implement everything so that could be why they took them out... maybe they'll have more time on another game they'll work on and insert it there..

But still, the video looked awesome and I wish we had gotten to play like that...

And then they released this, and I think they got most of the stuff down packed from here:

Would be cool if they released a remastered edition of AC3 and include everything that was supposed to be in the original release!

According to the interview Adrian Hough did with Loomer, he was the only VA to return from the initial casting. Everyone else was recast. So possible it was Adrian and he was just doing a different accent or he hadn't been called in yet to record so they did a placeholder VA. Also possible the casting had not been done yet at that point. Given that Connor scalps the guy at the end, this was obviously from an early version. That got scrapped for not being accurate. I'm surprised it made it to animations and a demo.

Interesting that the NPC does look like concept Haytham. If that's true, then he wasn't as secret as we thought (hindsight is 20-20). But wasn't Connor also a full Mohawk initially? The iOS game has Connor the son of some Mohawk and not Haytham which eludes to that being made from the original story and not the one we actually got in AC3. So if that's the case, this could be from an early version of the story where Haytham and Connor aren't father-son, and Haytham perhaps wasn't a Templar but instead was either an Assassin or at least pro-Assassin. Templars in the games do tend to be real people so maybe making Haytham, a fictional character, Templar grandmaster presiding over real characters was a late change. If that's the case, then playable Haytham must have come along after this demo was made and wasn't initially planned.

So much speculation off a short video. :p Too bad the bouncing limbs, that camp as populated as it was, the wolves seeming to help out Connor, and the various graphic settings didn't make it to the actual game. Wonder if there was a problem with them or if it was because the game was on last gen. Something had to go and the cool effects got the cut. Would be nice to see a remaster for the PS4/X1 (and PC >.>) with the effects put back in and maybe some of the systems changed to pick up on what AC4 and Unity (and Comet maybe) added. Maybe even bring in open world sailing so we can sail from New York to Davenport ourselves while taking British (or even American) ships as we went. Be a change in pace from just taking the frontier every single time or quick traveling. With the Caribbean now in AC4, a part of that could also be potentially added into an AC3 remaster for a touch of variety with the possible odd callback to Edward as we run around. Maybe not have Kingston, etc be locations, but at least we can sail around maybe. The crafting system needs an overhaul badly and as much as I liked AC3's naval, some of the AC4 stuff could be added. Davenport can also use an upgrade to make it more real. Their lack of movements (all they really did was sway in conversations) bugged me after a while. Then I got a bug with Lance in a late game conversation where Connor would always face away from him. Happened to me twice in two separate playthroughs and that'll never be fixed. The wolves friendly to Connor might be a bit much, but maybe Connor could get a pet wolf instead as an added side quest that he can call in while on the frontier. I'd also like a return to the ACB horse system. You pick a horse, that horse is your's and is the only one to come when called until you mount some other one. Meh. Wishful thinking and will likely never happen. AC3 gets another version, it'll be upgraded about as much as AC3L was ... which wasn't much. :(

No argument there, AC3 would've have been a masterpiece if it had captured all those elements.

more time, next gen systems, etc.

I mean, look at what you have in Unity. I'd say that the parkour animations we have in Unity look just as freaking amazing as the tree running in this target gameplay footage

This video doesn't make me mad at all. The animations are the LAST thing I would complain about in AC3. This video was just showing what they wanted gameplay to look like and they got reasonably close in an open world game.

The animations aren't what disappoints me - AC3's animations were excellent for a current-gen game. What makes me sad is the random events, the fluidity and brutality of combat and crowd density. Would have made the Frontier so much more worthwhile if we had lively settlements like this.

Wow what an awesome video! I have to agree that I would have loved to see some of the elements in that video make it into the final product. Connor's outfit wasn't my favorite in that video though and I'm glad that they ended up using the version that they did.

I think the animations in the final game were actually better than in this video TBH, in everything but the tree-running. Granted, the tree paths here look very linear and on-rails, but to be honest the ones in the game were effectively pretty linear as well.

Personnaly it's the mouvements that gets me mad.

For example, Connor performs a seemless air assassination, something removed from the final game. Plus, we never get to kick someone in the face, even though it's a detail, it's an important one, especially the move right after when he grab him with the rope dart (which looks 10000 times better) to air assassinate him, it's just so awesome. And that Leap of Faith oh my god, so beautiful ! I really wonder why they didn't put any snowstack (is that a word ?) in the game... And all those awesome slow-motion, just adds so much to the combat.

Some people here seem to think that this video is actual gameplay footage from early in development, obviously it isn't. There isn't a single game released today that looks that good and animates that smoothly. This is a prerendered CGI video that was likely shown to investors, it's supposed to be a representation of what the actual game would look and play like. Just because you can't do some of the specific things in the video doesn't mean that Ubisoft "removed" them. The features never existed outside of this CGI footage.

However the one interesting thing I noticed is that they used the Altair/Ezio running animation for Connor in this video. Pretty glad they changed it, honestly I think the freerunning and combat animations look better in the final game than they do in this footage.

They're very identical, but they are also very distinct. It was the only disappointing thing in AC2 for me when I saw Ezio's running animation.

That doesn't make any sense. It's impossible to be both identical and also different.

This video, 36 seconds in, there's footage of Ezio running and then of Altair running from the same angle.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=II_g4_LSSRA

It's exactly the same animation.

It makes sense that they reused the animations they had for the video though, it's a pre-pro video where you simplify things as much as possible to make the vid and get the point across.

Btw, here's some info that could be seen on some AC3 slides shown at GDC13, regarding earlier outlines of AC3.
Based on names describing missions in the outline contents:
Sequence 1 would have had a London carriage chase sequence (possibly omitted due to inclusion of a similar sequence in ACR as well? Considering the game appeared mid AC3 development).
We would meet a 4 year old Biddle on our route to America.
In Sequence 2 we'd recruit Hickey before meeting Lee.
There were missions to recruit Paschall and Gardner. Johnson and Pitcairn were not in the outline contents.
In Sequence 3 there was a mission to save young Washington after killing Braddock. Then we visit the Temple.
Sequence 4 would start with Haytham and Ziio arguing.

From a later document that featured Johnson and Pitcarin - Sequence 2 didn't feature Silas or rescuing Ziio (named Onatha then). Charles Lee would come up with a lead to find Ziio and that's how sequence would end. Benjamin Franklin was a source of secondary missions for Haytham.

The Tea Party mission originally was supposed to have an escort NPCs section on the way to the harbor, and there was something in the description about 'managing riots to our advantage'.

Lol no you won't. You are part of an Assassins Creed forum, however bad it is you will still get the rest - just like me. Although, I find even the worst entries into the AC series (AC 3) incredibly fun. To be honest, AC 3 was the most hyped I have ever been for an AC game. I constantly watched over the E3 gameplay. Yes it wasn't the best. But I still played through it and free roamed for hours. I am very excited for AC Unity however as I wanted the game to go back to an urban environment. The only worry I have about AC Unity is the combat. I am glad it is harder, I just hope its not glitchy like AC 3 and AC 4. The rest of the game I am confident for - the graphics (I am very certain it will not get downgraded visually - its a pure next gen title, all AC games look identical to the E3 demo, Watch Dogs was only downgraded Ubi title in terms of visuals but that was because it was shown at E3 2012 which was way too early, was supposed to be shown purely at E3 2013 which would have made the downgrade much less obvious.), the pakour looks awesome and the customization is really exciting.
