Well when you Google "Lateral Supernova" you get a ton of Adidas sneakers...

Run DMC!? Of course it's probably wrong, but they did have a bunch of rock songs. "King of Rock", "It's Tricky", "Raising Hell". First guess is likely never right.

One of these days, the puzzle clue really will be a stereogram, and I will feel less like an idiot for not seeing a hidden image after getting nose print smudges on my monitor and staring for several minutes at a time.:nonchalance:

I saved this to my desktop, opened the properties, and the title was "a lateral supernova'

It also says that the subject is 713/8773.

So "lateral supernova" and "713/8773". 713/8773 is a math equation. The the lyrics in the song Lateralus by Tool contain a fibonacci sequence in the number of syllables. Not quite sure how supernova fits in though or the actual image.

It looks like the lines on the palm of a hand.

It's red.

The TV series "The Red Hand Gang (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CkY5kx3U4E8)" starred James Bond III.

He also starred in "Go Tell It on the Mountain", the title of a well-covered song, amongst which artists are The Wailers.

The Wailers were Bob Marley's backing band.

Bob Marley 10-pack incoming! \o/

Ok I'm new to the forum but when I saw the supernova it got me thinking that supernovas can sometimes lead to the creation of a black hole. I
So as someone mentioned earlier then it could be soundgarden Supermassive Blackhole? Just a thought but RATM would also be great!

Too right! I hate that I am reduced to coming back to the computer every few minutes, refreshing the screen, and hoping that someone vastly smarter and with vastly better tools than I makes The Big Breakthrough. I used to fancy myself a pretty good puzzle-solver, but past the cryptogram clue several weeks back, I am clueless.

OK Dan, here you go. If you divide 713 by 8773 you get 081272. That's the day the Grateful Dead played in Sacramento, CA.! (I hate the dead, but so what) ;)
Some tid bits:
'the Dead left room for exploratory, spacey soundscapes.
The band was known for its unique and eclectic style, which fused elements of rock, folk, bluegrass, blues, reggae, country, improvisational jazz, psychedelia, and space rock'

'While the supernova can be seen, it can't be heard, as sound waves cannot travel through space. But what if the light waves emitted by the exploding star and other cosmological phenomena could be translated into sound? That's the idea behind a "Rhythms of the Universe," a musical project to "sonify" the universe by Grateful Dead percussionist and Grammy award-winning artist Mickey Hart that caught the attention of Nobel Prize-winning astrophysicist George Smoot of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.'

Ray LaMontagne is back with a catchy earworm called Supernova, which is the title track from his new album produced by Dan Auerbach from the Black Keys. The verse involves cramming in a plethora of words over a relaxed but up-tempo acoustic guitar reminiscent of Night Moves by Bob Seeger. The chorus, however, is very close to Touch of Grey by the Grateful Dead. The keyboard riff is the dead giveaway, but even the melody is very similar.

You are welcome!!!

So I guess the picture could be one of three things.
1. Nothing, and the clue is the details of it: 'a lateral supernova' and '713/8773'
2. It's an image that's been altered somehow: Photoshop or whatever
3. It's a very small piece of a much larger, well-known image, possibly an album cover or band photo

1. The image has relevance, but so do the other elements you've uncovered.
2. Could be.
3. Could be.

When I google 'Lateral Supernova' I get results about Gamma Rays. QOTSA's original name was Gamma Ray.

I can't find any album cover of theirs that fits the image, nor figure out the relevance of the numbers. And i've been waiting for a QOTSA pack forever, which skews my thoughts a bit.

But QOTSA is all I have at this point, really stumped.

The image is definitely that type of vantage point (a shot from the back of a crowd...concert, movie theater, etc). Only it looks as if they are watching something that looks like faces. One off to the right, and another cut off on the left border. That to me looks like a face a a Greek god or something. The xXxX pattern looks like some sort of railing or something.

Of course...I am most likely way off

Green just means the text is a clue. The color green itself isn't a clue. Dan uses green to differentiate clues from his normal forum postings

Oh yeah, didn't Dan mention that at some point? My bad, forget I said anything then.

In that case, I'm not sure how 180 ties in.

Doing a google image search for that I got pictures of sheets which means only one thing. We got Moody Blues coming next week and Nights in White Satin! :)
As big a fan as I am (duh) Nights would be a terrific bore on the guitar. Unless, of course, the Mellotron was transposed for guitar. But they did have an excellent concert at Red Rocks in 1992. :p

Yeah it was mostly a joke, but would be fun to get some Moody Blues at least. I agree Nights probably wouldn't be that amazing on guitar, but was still fun to throw a completely random idea out there. :D

That does make certain features easier to see. It looks like there are figures in the lower left, but from the perspective we are standing above and behind them (looking down on the tops of their heads and shoulders). ie, the figures are in the foreground looking towards the XXX's down below them.

Also..... from behind the figures look like orcs from Lord of the Rings. :nonchalance:

Obviously, the clxxx clue is that our current lines of thinking are 180 degrees from the correct solution to this puzzle.

This my be a long shot but if you see 8773 as a code for the numbers of the alfabetical letter then you get HGGC.
This is a company and one of its founders is J. Steven Young. So I thought maybe Neil Young or AC/DC (Young brothers)?
Then i started looking for something with 713. => appears that neil young has a concert on the 13th of july this year in the echo arena in Liverpool.

Don't know what lateral supernova or the picture has to do with it though.

Its a very long shot but maybe it can help.

or.... the X's are roman numerals in the image.

Supernova: starburst, explosion, starburst guitar pattern?

Numbers 713/8771: a division problem, phone number, #713 out of a set of 8771?

"Def Leppard releases Hysteria, the longest rock album ever released as a single LP or cassette."

"Bon Jovi's "Livin' on a Prayer" reaches #1 in the USA. It would be 1987's biggest hit song worldwide."

" Pink Floyd release A Momentary Lapse of Reason"

stuffffff

There's definitely someone's face on the upper right corner.
We can clearly see 2 eyes, a nose, the shape of a cheek. That person seems to wear a hat just above the X marked thing that might be some mic or wind instrument.
On the right of this thing, we can see something that looks like a hand, near where his mouth should be.

So, this is my guess:
- lateral supernova: Adidas.
- the man on the picture is playing didgeridoo

Et voilà, the next DLC is a Jamiroquai 5 songs pack !!

713/8771:

Not prime numbers, not fibonacci numbers.
713 divided by 8771 = 0.081290617

I'm trying to parse these numbers out as dates:
July 1, 2003
August 7, 1971

Or, for our non-US players:
January 3, 2007
July 1, 1987

But my Google skills are coming up short, and I can't find anything linking either set of dates.
Do those dates mean anything (born on/died on, band formed/band split up, etc.) to anyone?

The equation is 713/8773 not 713/8771. That equals 0.081272..... That is where the August 12, 1972 date comes from. The last day that US troops left Vietnam. Looking at the picture further it looks like the roman numerals are actually XXXI = 31. Both 713 and 8771 are divisible by 31. So maybe it has something to do with 1983. Of note Run DMC and Red Hot Chilli Peppers were formed in 1983. Again I am just reaching but Run DMC has been guessed a few times already for the adidas lateral supernova reference.

Did I miss 713/8773 being debunked as relating to Sully Erna of Godsmack? Coming in 713th out of 8773 is too on the nose to be coincidental.

I can't make any connections to the other clues but it seems like this line is too good to abandon.

I like too many suggestions in this thread! It's not okay to miss out on any of them! Soundgarden, Rage Against The Machine, Foo Fighters, Audioslave, Jane's Addiction....

The filter used in the picture seems very 90s.. If you look at Jesus Christ Pose by Soundgarden on Youtube they use a very similar filter in their video.. And the X's in the picture only remind me of The xx.

I'm expecting something I don't have in my playlist for this DLC! If not, the thread guy is being too secretive!

I'll be really surprised if it's not JA. Keep in mind, I've failed to get one right, as of today. But, their first album was by XXX Records and on the cover of their debut album, Perry's cross-stitched crotch looks similar to the clue.

Somehow i think this is the John Travolta's arm from the Saturday Night Fever album cover...in red velvet.

https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=saturday+night+fever+image

Linking to...The Bee Gees Odessa album...aka the red velvet album.

This was the last album to feature guitarist Vince Melouney...a founding member of Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs.

Billy Thorpe...biggest hit was Chidlren of the Sun...

Sun = A Possible Lateral Gamma-Ray Burst Jet from Supernova 1987A.

Trying to fit other clues.

Could this be a Billy Thorpe Pack...or at least Children of the Sun?

The Godsmack theory is looking more and more reasonable... My main problem with the theory though is that when someone said it'd be from the 90's-00's, Dan seemed to imply that he was wrong. I don't know much about Godsmack but a quick google search shows they formed in 95? After 70's week I was expecting something from the 80's this week since that decade has a much smaller rocksmith selection.

Until Dan confirms that it's Godsmack I'm going to have some reasonable doubt about this... But maybe I misunderstood what he meant?

I remember back in the late 90s a rock station in NY was saying that they were an Alice in Chains cover band before they started writing their own music...which turns out to be un-true. I think that nugget of misinformation may have a hand in a lot of people comparing the bands...I personally don't hear much of a similarity at all.

I am actually a bit surprised there is such a backlash against them. I try not to disparage any DLC as many people have different musical tastes...but I mean Godsmack is a pretty successful band that does have some pretty good songs. I think they are more relevant in the Rock community at least stateside than some of the other DLC in the last year.

But to each their own, if it is Godsmack...and you don't like em...don't buy it. And by no means am I a Godsmack fan boy...if this is the DLC for this week, I will probably cherry pick a song or 2.

People were guessing Godsmack since the very beginning of the thread and not only did Dan not confirm it, but he gave us another clue to help us along. That plus the fact that he basically confirmed it's not 90s/2000s means it's not Godsmack. I sure hope not anyway, not my cup of tea.
