Silentguy, an Hitmanforum member, met Jesper Kyd at The Royal Library in Denmark and found out that he's working on 4 major titles that'll be shown at E3.

Could this mean that he's working on Assassin's Creed: Unity? I hope so!

@Mayrice

He did the soundtracks of AC2; Revelations and Brotherhood.

@Jexx

I would love for Lorne Balfe to come back too. He did a pretty good job on AC3's and TOKW's soundtracks :)

Maybe they can both come back :D

A huge part of AC2's mood & atmosphere was due to his work; I don't think I'd be hooked on the series if it wasn't for Jesper Kyd.

Besides he comes from the Amiga demo scene; which means something to certain people.....

Though the only song that stood out to me from AC:2 was the Auditore family song.

You mean the person who uses "Whammmm" in all his compositions? :p Joking, but I understand that some people only pay attention to the tunes and not the composers. I have interest in learning about the composers and the technical details too. Whatever you say about Jesper Kyd's music, you can't argue that he nails the technical details very well.

I just recently got into recognizing composers as well as development studios and screen writers.

I only know Hans Zimmer because PotC is my favorite movie franchise and I love the music he did in it. Not so much in inception though.

No, last one was during one of the first person Desmond sequences.

Jesper just does ambient music so well.

Ideally, Balfe for action sequences/cut scenes/multiplayer and Jesper for Freeroam/exploration missions such as tombs.

Not a problem, just be more careful with your words. By the way, I'm not a big fan of that track either. I like his Hitman 2 tracks a lot more.

I guess the thing with Jesper Kyd is that he aims more for atmosphere that suits the game and story, while you want tracks that are "easy listens". That explains quite a bit.

JustPlainQuirky
06-05-2014, 04:33 AM

Well I cerinaly hope he is working on Unity, his tracks had the perfect ambience that the series needed and it would be sweet if he came back atleast for one more game.

I loved some of Balfe's compositions but there were a few that I found quite bland.

Brian Tyler's tracks I can't remember at all though. Seriously I have listened to the entire soundtrack and the only theme I really like is the main theme, the others just kinda mesh togheter into a forgettable mess in my opinion.

Farlander1991

To be honest I kinda hope he doesn't. At least not on his own.

It's a matter of personal preference mostly. Jesper Kyd does some amazing ambient tracks (Acre Underworld from AC1 is so awesome), and some really cool action ones (like Access the Animus), but my favorite soundtracks have to be ACR (where he was working alongside Balfe) and AC4 (by Brian Tyler), with AC3 being slightly behind (if only, oh if only all the cool tracks from Balfe's soundtrack were ACTUALLY released).

But the thing is, I don't actually like 50 to 75% of his music that much. They sound fine in-game (which is the most important part I would say, and does enhance the whole experience), but I can literally count my enjoyable to listen AC1 tunes on one hand - Access to Animus, Spirit of Damascus, Acre Underworld, and that tune that wasn't released in the soundtrack but was reused in ACR as 'No Mistakes'. AC2 has amazing sounds (the city music is so awesome, and the main theme), but everything action-based (with the exception of Venice Rooftops) is really boring to listen to. Again, sounds fine in the tandem with the game, but outside...

And while ACR soundtrack is one of my favourites, combat parts that were composed by Jesper are the weakest, IMO. It's not that I think it's bad, but listening to video game music outside of the game is what I do quite a lot and what defines soundtrack quality to me, and the more percentage of the soundtrack feels good listening outside of the game, the higher it is on my list - and ACR, AC3 and AC4 have a higher percentage of said tracks than AC1, AC2, and ACB. (and I count the music that wasn't released as part of the official soundtrack, this especially concerns AC3 - lots of great stuff that wasn't officially released, can't really list anything I like from AC1/AC2 and ACB that wasn't released... though, again, in case of AC1, there was one unreleased track I like, but it's in ACR soundtrack now).

On a side note, though, the Cello trailer music is pure awesome.

Come to think of it, is there any combat music in any game worth listening to in the real world? I don't think I've come across any yet. :p

Farlander1991
06-05-2014, 08:37 AM
Off the top of my head from AC games:

Fight Club (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W3AJ28nt2jE)
Trouble in Town (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S2P8L_5zKko)
Wild Instincts (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W9-HN1_eLGQ)
Lay Aboard Lads (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T8ZnoIPEM8E)
Take What Is Ours (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7QxVkfckjXg)

Those are the ones that I loved even before playing the games, so my enjoyment of them was never influenced by the game itself (though, to be fair, none of the AC3 music sounds in AC3 by default in combat, just in specific situations/missions... but that's the problem of the AC3 music system, not the music :p ).

But I was talking not just about combat music, but action music in specific. I.e. in AC2, I don't like any of the chase music, for example (with the exception of Venice Rooftops). While AC4 has a gem like this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hsVr8OCk9gU) (would benefit from an official soundtrack arrangement though, rather than a looped game version). It fits the mood, it fits the situations, it pumps you up while you're in game and you don't feel bored as hell while listening to it outside of the game.

I second this, I thought he did an excellent job in AC3... but if Jesper Kyd does the soundtrack in Unity, all the better.

My favourite AC tracks are:

*Echoes of Roman Ruins
*Earth
*Fight Club
*No Mistakes
*The Brotherhood Escapes
*The Man with the Wolf
*AC3 main menu theme
*Trouble in Town

Sweet! Not saying I dislike the others though.

However ACI-R/Hitman/Freedom Fighter (main theme, though that's more since I like the Russian style than anything else), all say this could be a good thing. The next Hitman isn't gonna be at E3 though, so wonder if he'll do that...

What DO you people listen to in your spare time if not Jesper Kyd? He's my second-most played artist on Last.fm.

I don't want to be disappointed, so I'm not allowing myself to get hyped up about the idea of Jesper returning. But if he did, it would be a dream come true. If not him, then Brian Tyler. Lorne Balfe is okay, but his music is too bombastic for my tastes.

I'd really love to see him back. AC2's soundtrack is my favorite of the series, possibly my favorite soundtrack from any game. I loved that Old-World, mysterious ambiance it lent AC2, and to be honest, it probably tricked me into thinking the story was a lot stronger than it really was.

@Mayrice try listening to "Salvation of Forli."

Rugterwyper32

I dunno, I love AC2's soundtrack but I much prefer AC4's soundtrack. Though when it comes down to it, in terms of preference they're miles away from Castlevania Symphony of the Night, Metroid Prime or Sonic CD (or most of the series for the matter) for me. Or Touhou overall. Man do I love me some ZUNpets.
Still, it's pretty great. Not just the ideal for me, great as it is. I will agree with Farlander, the action tracks Kyd has tend not to be the strongest (Access the Animus being the one exception). Same issue I have with Jeremy Soule for the most part. Their atmosphere work is great in-game, but I don't find myself listening to it outside the game that often with some exceptions.

MiguelSanch2014

Jesper is by far the best. If he returned it would be all kinds of awesome. He defined what the game is, and soundtrack HAS to be, for this franchise. Genius. However.

Lorne Balfe should never be allowed to return to sully the AC franchise ever again. AC3 - what a waste of airtime.

And then came Bryan Tyler. Now if you can't get your Kyd fix, he's your man. He came out of nowhere with an incredible lineup for AC4. So much to live up to, and he N A I L E D it.

Happy to have either Kyd or Tyler, myself. Lorne's a damn hack.

Lorne Balfe only made music for the cutscenes and multiplayer in Revelations, Jesper did the rest.

Lorne Balfe made those from the AC:R OST story campaign:

1. Assassin’s Creed Theme
2. The Road to Masyaf
3. Sailing to Constantinople
4. Master and Mentor
5. Sofia Sartor
6. Son of Umar
7. A Heated Discussion
8. A Familiar Face
9. Arrocco
10. Last of the Palaiologi
11. We Talk Together
12. The Mentor Returns
13. Of Life and Death
14. An Unsubtle Approach
15. The Hidden City
16. Mastermind
17. Everything Changes
18. You Have Earned Your Rest
20. Passing the Torch
21. Scheduled for Deletion
22. Altair and Darim
23. The Revelation
24. Labored and Lost
25. Reunion
26. Enough for One Life

PLUS

24 tracks from the multiplayer segment.

I hope Lorne Balfe is never allowed near another AC production ever. Hands down the worst soundtrack in the series, thank god I didn't buy that thing. I was glad they ditched him for AC4, and what a surprise that turned out to be, never heard of Brian Tyler and when I found out he was Hollywood I was surprised it was going to be more of the same as Balfe and thank god it wasn't. Kyd or Tyler I'd love to hear another soundtrack from either. Or some other talent I've yet to hear I'd welcome that as well.

.... just anything other than generic orchestral filler music for 2nd-rate action flicks.

Mass Effect went from a unique musical style in the 1st game, to worn-out, clichéd heroic strings and drums in II and III; something similar happened in AC, from the so-called Ezio trilogy to AC3----though I agree that AC4BF was an improvement.

I think some people have commented that today's demos have music that sounds like it could be by Jesper. During the singleplayer demo, I noticed some very familiar-sounding music starting around the 3:30 mark when Arno is sneaking into a social club. It sounds like a new arrangement of the "Secret Chamber in Vatican City" hidden track from AC2, which already had a new arrangement on Brotherhood's soundtrack named "Apple Chamber."

That's obviously not proof that Jesper is returning, but it certainly is interesting evidence. He also already re-arranged "Dreams of Venice" from AC2 into "City of Rome" for Brotherhood's soundtrack, so it wouldn't be the first time he's revisited old material. What do you think?

I hope Brian Tyler or someone new. There was a track someone noted sounded like an AC2 track, but I hope it's another composer and this is the beginning of a few consistent "series themes" in the vein of Castlevania where each time they show in a new game it sounds new and fresh while still being the same tune.
I mean, seriously, can you match the quality of the various versions of Vampire Killer?

I didn't think so.

Am I the only one who does not see the appeal with AC4's soundtrack at all? I hear everyone praising it but I can't even remember a single tune aside from the main theme. Am I missing something or do I just have the most hipster taste in music?

@marvelfannumber His tracks were all right. I only started playing AC4 recently which is probably why I can still remember around 5 of my favs... but I'll probably forget them in the long run. Right now I remember the Nassau/Kingston ambience, that ship fighting music with the violins, the main opening theme, bits of the Havana theme, and one infiltration piece.

Jesper's and Lorne's work is much more memorable to me. I used to be able to sing and hum the Echoes of the Roman Ruins and a bit of Dream of Venice. and the rest is really easy to play in your head without listening to it.

ze_topazio

Lorne Balfe music is okay but sounds more like a "generic Hollywood epic movie soundtrack" than what Jesper Kyd got us used to in the first few games, Brian Tyler music is somewhere in the middle of the two, at the end of the day Jesper music is the best for this franchise, it has that mix between classic and modern, sci-fi and epic, and captures the location and the tone of the story perfectly, in my opinion at least.

Brian Tyler is definitely involved. You could hear his typical percussion in the combat music.

Kyd alone would be a big mistake in my opinion. His ambient music is stellar granted, but it's important to have the tracks that are powerful and resonate during cutscenes as well, and the only one I can think of that Kyd did was Ezio's Family. Balfe did incredible work in ACR as well as AC3 (unpopular opinion, I know) as did Tyler in BF. I don't think Balfe or Kyd really work that well as sole composers for a game, their strengths lie in different areas. Tyler was good at both the ambient and some of the more resonating sounds but not particularly incredible at either.

Well i loved AC1 AC2 ACB ACR soundtracks A LOT!!! I kinda liked AC3 and AC4 was good for a pirate theme bit overall i didnt like it...

From this i feel the first one is good but sounds too similar to lorne balfe which makes me thinks its him... but i love the second one it is very emotional but to be honest i would guess its lorne balfe or jesper kyd.

I was wondering, has it leaked anywhere who is doing the AC:U soundtrack. My guess is Olivier Derivière would be doing it, since he did the Freedom Cry soundtrack (and it would be convenient to have a French guy do French music), but I haven't read anything official.

Well, that's what I've been hoping for. Would be really cool if it actually turns out he's doing the soundtrack. His sci-fi-y electronic stuff it pretty good as well, (though we don't really hear that in Freedom Cry), it would definitely fit the series.

Ubisoft could be helpful and just tell us, but they probably aren't going to be. The music is probably already at the point where the composer is finalized or the soundtrack is finished.

I know Jesper Kyd is active on social media, has anyone tried asking him whether he is on ACU or not, doing so could quash/confirm any rumors.

Having watched all official AC Unity videos several times over, I don't think the music in any of them bears resemblance to Kyd's style, which is a little disheartening because I was eager to see his take on 18th century France, his previous AC scores are sublime. Contrary to what the thread title suggests, I suspect those 4 games he's currently working on are smaller/indie titles (at no point does the guy from the Hitman forums mention that they're 'major'). Kyd seems to be focused more on smaller projects nowadays anyway, the last thing he worked on was an indie digital-only 360/PC exclusive. But who knows, it could still be him, we've heard such little of the music that it's difficult to gauge the style and completely rule anyone out.

I'd agree with you and definitely say it sounds more like Brian Tyler, or even Lorne Balfe. But for some reason I don't think either of the two are involved, I have an inkling Unity's composer is Olivier Derivière.

Personally I'd like to see him AND Lorne do the music.

Lorne would be excellent for the battle music and the most tense and actiony events

Jesper does atmospheric music the best

AC3 has my favorite battle music, especially for the frontier but AC2 has my favorite city and exploration music.

Kyd, Lorne and Tyler would be so good.

Kyd can handle everything and the others can serve him tea.

Nah seriously Kyd might do the gameplay and Lorne the cutscenes like ACR and I'm not sure where Tyler fits but maybe he could do some gameplay and cutscene tracks.

I don't want Balfe in there, his music style is too hollywood-esqe and unfitting with the franchise's signature sound that Kyd established (in my opinion). I'd personally like it to be Kyd, Tyler and Derivière.

I get what you mean, but he could still make some great tracks. And his bombastic style made sense in the context of the revolution.

While they're hollywood-esque they're really good. Perhaps he will do modern day, his styles suits a more modern setting. If there is action in the modern part though.

Yeah, laboured and lost is one of my favourites, and his unreleased and unused ambient tracks for AC3 are fantastic. I'd like to clarify that I don't dislike his music, AC scores are top notch and AC3's is no exception, I just don't think his bombastic style is particularly fitting with any AC game - even one set in a chaotic period like a revolution, I like his more toned down tracks.
