Man I love it .... I set up huge american convoys and lots of shermans and made them attack an insanely fortified German position. It was a massacre http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif - one Pzkw IV died and 40 shermans and 2 convoys bit the dust http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Great map. Question, is there any way to add this map to the QMB?. I have beeb able to add the new planes to the campaigns. I would like to play this as a "quick mission map".

Thanks

Agree, thanks a lot for the map, its great.

It's not just the "map" I want to thank them for. It is the affect the map has on engine performance as well as airfoil efficiency! Is it perfectly modelled? Who knows and to a very large degree, I don't care because it reminds me so much of my real life flying under hot conditions, that it lends itself beautifully to helping my "immersion" factor for the game. They actually put some effort into this one. Anyone flying this map will have to think before hitting "warp speed" or WEP. They will have to carefully decide if the heavier bomb or gun pods are worth it. Finally, pilots will have to think and think hard! I'm very happy with getting more than just a "map" out of the deal! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

All very nice, but one little problem:: The sand dunes are reversed. They reversed the vertical mapping.

The sand dunes are holes in the flat sandscape, and not piles of sand. Fly very low over the sand dunes and you will see. Also set time to 1700 hours for Extreme shadows and you will see the sand dune landsacape as not sand dunes but holes in the flat sandscape.

If I understand you correctly, you're saying they put the high points low and the low points high? Unless there is a defining characteristic such as snow on the mountain peak, how would you know which is the high and which is the low? It's relative positioning and with extreme shadows the low points are going to look like holes because the sunlight is at too shallow of an angle while the high points will still be receiving illumination. I will bring up the map and see for sure, but I think the best way to see if the vertical mapping is reversed is to start at the coastline in 3D mode (zoomed-in, hit Enter key) and see if the dunes rise from the flatness or if holes appear closest to the flat coastal plain.

Be careful here, the sand can rise away from the coast, but that becomes the reference "sand level" where the holes appear further inland.

One major note here is you can land on "top" of the sand dunes and take off again without turning around. The "top" of the sand dunes are totally flat and extend over a far greater area than the dune slopes.

I used TB~3 to land and take off from the "top" of the sand dunes.

Visually, the dunes rise from the sea level coastline, which would seem correct. The four airfields depicted on the mainland part of the MT map are positioned on flat terrain as would be expected. I see what you're saying about the tops of the dunes becoming the reference "sand level". I'm not sure if it's got to do with limitations of the current graphics engine, but you should not be able to land and takeoff from a sand dune, for sure. It was the effects of late/early daytime lighting that I was curious about. I had no idea the dunes would support landing and takeoff. Good point, sir.

On further thought, the "tops" and "bottoms" of FB The Meds sand dune terrain may be identical in nature. Both the "tops" and "bottoms" are flat with slopes seperating them--a simple, quicky way to create a new terrain perhaps.

Below are sand dunes in Namibia, Africa, filmed during Canada's season 3 LEXX. I am thinking that sand dunes have no "tops," but only upwind slopes and downwind slopes meeting together.
