Have you seen the licensing garbage going on with ventrillo and TS2?

Jeez!

So whats the latest craze? I have a big bulky high-bandwidth linux server sitting idle for the next month. I was thinking about running TS2 on it and allowing anyone/everyone a chance to use it until my billing cycle ends.

After looking at the license agreements, I decided I'd rather have a root canal.

Any other suggestions? I hate to waste 2 terabytes of transfer on a heavy duty server.

ooops

i havent a clue about the licenseing hassels , but Ventrillo is by far a more clear & higher quality comms choice over TS2

If you want to be able to communicate with almost everybody out there, go for Teamspeak2.

If you want it without any trouble with setup, echos, auto-mike-activation and at a far better quality, I recommend ventrilo.

We began with RogerWilco, then used TS2 for a while, until we finally ended up with Ventrilo. I frequently use(d) these tools, only little for online gaming, so quality was an issue with RW and TS2, as well as the problems with setup. For me, there's no way back for online communication. I fully recommend Ventrilo. (2.1.0)

Not sure what you are talking about when it comes to licenseing with t/s. I'd like to know because I use t/s and would like to know what you are talking about.

We used to use ventrilo (much better com program), but those JERKS over at ventrilo won't allow a casual user host a server with more than 8 (or 12 or something) people on it at a time.

I even told them I'd be happy to PURCHASE the right to use the program beccause it is a good quality program, but they flat denied me and told me that I had to go and rent a server from one of their "approved" vendors.

I understand that people where abusing ventrilo, but my group never did, and I was willing to PAY for a registered version.

Anyway, I don't think a lot of the people at ventrilo (I could get quite colorful in my desceription of them, but I'll leave it at that), and do not recomend it to anyone even though it is a slightly better voice com program than t/s.

TS2 - We use it, all the squads that we fly with use it - it works - you can make it as clear or low bandwidth as you please, it's free.

One way or another one system will become dominant it's irrelevant whether it is technicaly the best or not. Why not run a poll to find out what most people are using then follow the numbers?

Yea, I just read the l/a in ventrilo. They only allow 8 clients!!! and they offer NO chance whatsoever to purchase a registered version so that you can host more.

YOU ARE FORCED TO RENT FROM ONE OF THEIR **APROVED** SERVERS. Those guys suck.

Use teamspeak.

Ventrilo 2.1.3- allows as many players on with out buying into one of thier servers. the 2.2.0 only allows eight persons on.

The 361st has used RW, and Ventrilo and are still using Vent. Better quality, but heavy BW.

Right, but I don't think you can get a hold of v2.1.3 anymore, can you? So if you are a new user, you are SOL with vent. and t/s is your best bet. Plus, it is the whole principle of the attitude of the jerks at flagship....I digress, you are right, 2.1.3 allows as many as you want, but you don't get the whisper features or the new assignable buttons to joystick, etc. And, again, I don't think 2.1.3 is d/lable from the vent site, so you'd have to hunt for a "pirated" copy from someone (probably in viololation of their stupid a$$ed l/a again - Jerks).

TinMan, You are correct sir. (in Ed McMahon voice) With controller software you can set a PTT but not in Vent itself. The whisper thing is cool but when will you use it other than playing around not in game?

Check this link out. I think its only the client side not the server side. Oldversions.com (http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=ventrilo)

Ventrilo sounds a tiny bit better then TS but if someones speaking on ven for about 20 seconds it will make them warp a bit in game with 700k 384k cable even.

TS sounds very clear understanding someone just fine is all that matters. The quality issue i dont get, even with rw you can hear someone fine and its much less resource demanding.

You'd be surprised on how handy whisper comes in when it comes to battle coms, and cross channel co-ordination between wing leaders and individual elements etc.

Plus, you can have a private conversation with a few people within a channel without clogging up the channel for others while staying in that channel.

Believe me, it IS pretty handy.

I see your point. We try to maintain Brevity when in combat, and switch to a combat room when going to fly. But being able to cross channel talk would be nice.

btw-I don't believe that t/s has the ability to map from controllers like v2.2 does so in that respect, t/s has nothing on v2.1 except for whisper

Baldie,
If you allow people to use your Teamspeak server for free....non-profit... You have no licensing issues. It's only if you rent servers or charge people to connect to your servers that you run into that problem.

Yep. I understand that.

The TS people aren't doing me any favors so I'm not about to do them any.

If I host a big fat free server for a month, and a bunch of squads decide to lease team speak servers, I'm the pusher-man for TS.

Screw TS.
