View Full Version : Interesting offline campaign moment

For the first time, ever, I have had a pilot make it to 1945. I was happily surprised how the terrain is different in Germany http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

That's not the interesting moment I'm referring to, though.

I flew an intercept mission. My Squad's La-7s were late getting to the intercept point, and we pursued 12 JU-88s escorted by 4 Bf109 G-14s.

I ordered the squad to attack all aircraft, even my wingman, who has been doing stoooopid things like shooting ME if I am between a German plane and his. I crash-landed an La-5fn with no elevator control about a month earlier in campaign time, because HE shot me down and I couldn't afford to lose the crate.

Anyway, we had surprise on the bombers, and altitude. We were at 2500m, they were at various altitudes, coming near their airbase for landing (fighters landing, too! Oh boy!). Their altitudes were from about 100m to 1000m. I came in fast from about 5 o'clock high on one damaged JU-88 and downed it, right into a river. Then I circled, cleared my six as I climbed shallowly at high speed, and picked another bomber to cut from the group. I spotted one near the airfield, looked like he was circling, waiting to get into the pattern. I dove down on him, too, and lit an engine on fire. As I zoomed down and underneath him, I heard from my squad that he was downed. Not bad for me, two kills on JU-88s in about 3 minutes, no hits on my aircraft.
Now I'm feeling very brave. I spot a Bf109 G-14 coming in to land. I hug the ground, and come at him from the opposite end of his own runway. Flak was light for some reason. I saw a puff of smoke off his port wingtip as my shells connected, but I didn't look too closely, I was cutting grass with the prop. I climbed sharply and looked down at the strip. What the?!

The '109 is crossing the strip at a 45* angle. I split-S down to about 100m, and there's a Bf 109 G-14 with port wingtip damage, on the heading the one I shot in the wingtip was on, just pulling up his landing gear.

The guy did a touch and go across his own dispersal area to take to the air again and fight me! No contest, I was at 400 KPH indicated, he was at about 150 and climbing slowly. But WOW I never saw the AI do that before http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

So the AI fighter aborted landing to attack? That`s new. I haven`t seen it happen yet, myself.

Nice post. I have noticed several "wow !" moments from the AI, ever since patch 1.21 and 1.22 myself. Usually after I've crash-landed or been shot down and I can Shift + F2 and view my squadmates. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Nothing like what you described but I've seen my AI squadmates finally do head-on attacks against bombers, seen coordinated attacks on bomber formations, even seen a Thach Weave on occasion. I've even seen an AI Yak-3 trying to chase down a Dora and just not catching up to it, notice the Dora's wingman on his six, break off pursuit on the lead Dora do a Split-S and catch the wingman with a frontal burst with his guns.

Not to say that the AI doesn't need further improvement, but those moments are amazing.
