Several of the ones I like the most have already been posted, the three main ones in ACR, Acre Underworld, Spanish Empire/IŽll be with you from AC IV. So IŽll post these two:

Don't know the names, but I really like the music in Florence and Venice :). Why did they ditch Kyd by the way, has it ever been explained? Is there a chance he will be back for AC:U as it's setting more similar to the Ezio era (aka cultural european capital)?

They probably wanted a more blood and thunder, blockbuster-esque approach to the soundtrack. That's what I suspect - there's no official reason...

I think you'd have to be a staunch AC III fanboy to like the decision of not including ambient music..

Walk around ANY city in AC without music and it'll lose more than half of its charm and flare...

At the time, he was working on Darksiders II as far as I'm aware.
I, for one, would prefer sticking with Brian Tyler or another composer for Unity and learn that Kyd's working on the next Hitman. While his soundtrack for this series is great, I don't love it nearly as much as I love his work on the Hitman series, specially on Hitman 2.

Yeah they said leading up to the release of AC3 that pretty much nothing was holy as they tried to reinvent the franchise. So perhaps they thought a new composer would help to set a new mood.

Hitman is not a franchise I follow (have only played Absolution, which I thought was ok, so I may try the next one as well). I'm no music expert, but to me Kyd's music is far more iconic and unique. I remember those tunes and they affected my mood when exploring way more (in my very subjective experience ofc). It gave the whole running around rooftops such an epic/timeless feel.

Completely agree, Jesper's ambient tracks are breathtakingly good. The human vocals are entrancing and add to the charm and beauty of the composition, I loved the fact that he incorporated vocals into nearly every one of his tracks, something I feel the newer scores are somewhat lacking in. (Barring ToKW)

This is one of my favourite ambient tracks, I have far too many and would only struggle deciding on which one I like best.

The soft guitar strums, the vocals, the flute. Bliss.

See, that's part of why I don't want Kyd back in this series, I frankly want to see him back for Hitman as his work there, in my opinion, stands out even more than what he's done in AC, plus I absolutely loved Tyler's work in AC4.
Just so you get the idea of what the Hitman series has to offer. I'll post it under a spoiler tag as I'll post 4 tracks, one for each game of the series that's not Absolution (only one Jesper hasn't worked on so far)

First, we have Codename 47. Here, listen to Jesper's sound back 14 years ago. Man, I'm getting nostalgic here.

http://youtu.be/-EgaECVgmGs

Then we have Hitman 2.

http://youtu.be/SrW_81GJBGU

Then there's Contracts, which has every track making Acre Underworld sound like a lullaby

http://youtu.be/IAg63JkX6-U

And good ol' Blood Money, which sounds a lot closer to his current style (having been released in 2006 and all)

http://youtu.be/arA8Mdd2bx4

So yeah, that sums up why I'd like to have Jesper back on board for Hitman. The AC series has only been without his stuff for two games, and with AC4 Tyler managed to do a fantastic job. Meanwhile, while Absolution's OST was fantastic at some points, the composers certainly didn't jump into those shoes quite as readily, and besides that he hasn't done anything Hitman related since 2006, so it'd be nice to have him back after the letter IO made to the fans which hypes the next game up as something that can match and surpass Contracts and Blood Money seeing how they're gonna get back on track.

I liked ACIV's main theme, but I don't remember the rest... Still, I could live with BT again.

JK's stuff still sums up AC for me, I also liked his Hitman 2 stuff, HM:C not so much, and the main theme for HM:BM wasn't even his...he did BM, right? The main theme he did for Freedom Fighters was good too (gotta love a Russian choir).

I love his Contracts stuff, myself, it's a big part of what makes the atmosphere of that game so wonderfully dark. I just really love the atmosphere of Contracts, and I felt Blood Money was a step back from that, and even though a few missions in Absolution managed to retake that (Terminus, Hunter and Hunter and Blackwater Park, namely) they're still not quite up there.
Yeah, the main theme of BM, "Ave Maria", wasn't his at all. The ambient stuff he did for the game is top notch, though, even though the missions themselves aren't up there for the most part. At least, I feel so.

I haven't played the original in a while. The only missions Contracts doesn't have are the jungle missions which, while I liked the atmosphere, wouldn't have really worked, and then there's the Bjarkhov Bomb which I always felt had a lot of similarities to the final jungle mission, just that in Siberia with lots of snow, with targets who weren't on the "almost invincible" side of the spectrum, and instead of blowing up a drug lab (I think it was cocaine that guy had?) you blew up a submarine.

But yeah, Contracts is probably my most replayed of the bunch. Not only do I love the atmosphere, most missions have fantastic options for sniping, and man do I love sniping.

I know dude. AC1's ambient tracks tops any other in the series for me. I can't place my finger on what made them so good - maybe it's nostalgia, but I also thought they just fit more. And by that I mean they perfectly suited the time and place. I can't picture Masyaf, Kingdom, or any of the other cities without imagining their ambient tracks.

But it's a hard question. Impossible really. I'm not sure anyone can have an absolute favourite across the board - maybe a top 10... or 50. But AC1's ambient music just fit it perfectly. I listen to its soundtrack far more than the others when I'm working and I still haven't tired of it.

I can't recall exactly, but I thought that many of the tracks in later games repeated too much. As in the music would stop and another track began. AC1 had large gaps of silence in between which felt necessary to take in the atmosphere. Revelations was particularly bad for this IIR, though that might have been down to a glitch which meant I couldn't turn the volume of the music down. I honestly thought it was quite refreshing in AC III to not have any music in the cities.

I honestly thought it was quite refreshing in AC III to not have any music in the cities.

As much as I enjoy the later soundtracks, they felt a bit too grand compared to AC1. Like the composers were more interested in creating memorable tunes rather than pure ambiance. Take "Ezio's Family". The tune that's repeatedly incorporated into the overall score of AC2 and ACB. You can hear echoes of it in tracks like "Darkness Falls in Florence", "Earth" and "Venice Rooftops". ACR had a theme song that was echoed throughout the rest of its soundtrack, so did AC3 and AC4. AC1 was the only one that didn't have a real theme song. There are melodies, of course, but not instantly "hummable" like the sequels' themes.

That's why I like AC1's ambiance the best. AC2 has a great soundtrack for listening, but it doesn't create atmosphere as strongly as AC1. "Dreams of Venice" or "City of Rome" are beautiful tracks to listen to, but they're a bit too grand just for standing around on a rooftop and watching day turn into night. You don't want to be standing still when a bouncy tune like "Ezio in Florence" is playing - the tune is a call to action. It makes you want to freerun and do stuff, which is exactly what the devs want you to do in their game. Whereas AC1 is a more ponderous game. The soundtrack DOES invite you to simply stand still and take in your surroundings, like the true assassin the devs want you to imagine yourself as. AC1's soundtrack isn't compiled out of memorable tunes that you can hum along to. It consists of whispers and sighs, wind instruments and the occasional drum. It creates a constant sense of tension and threat while you're in the Kingdom. In Jerusalem you hear an angelic choir to reflect the sense of holiness and mysticism. In Damascus you hear bombastic drums and horns announcing the city's wealth to the world. In the later games, the music is more focused on supporting the characters and mood, whereas in AC1 the music is focused on creating a strong sense of location. That's the best way I can describe it.

Buut... I must agree with the others. There really should have been some in the cities. They botched up on that aspect!

But more on topic, I love the ambient music from AC4 it just has that flare to it with the spanish guitars, and mystery, I loved it!
