so i was reading peoples comments on the theory that up until i think was it altair that made the modification to the hidden blade so that it did not require a sacrifice or was it davinci? well since darius had the first recorded use of the hidden blade i was looking at his hand but couldnt really tell if his finger was missing? I thought that the blade didnt require the sacrifice to be used properly, i just thought that maybe Al Mualim or some other strict mentor beforehand and implemented the sacrifice into the hidden blade to ensure commitment. I cant tell if Darius is missing a finger or not. Can someone help me with this?

From the Wiki’s page on Darius (http://assassinscreed.wikia.com/wiki/Darius):

In his appearances, Darius had all ten fingers. Whether this is artistic license or an oversight is unknown.

For all we know Al Mualim changed the design for the whole sacrifice thing. Also Da Vinci didn't change it, it was Altair, as you say - Da Vinci was just reading the history of the blade off the codex page, where Altair talks about redesigning it.
