I picked up B-17 II last night and I have to say this is one of the most amazing sims I've ever played. One of the things that struck me the most about the game was the gun turrets. You control them with the joystick instead of the mouse. This adds alot of immersion and make firing the gun more enjoyable and believable instead of some stupid mini game like it is in IL2. What do you guys think? I know it's not a big deal but if PF is bomber based then using turrets is gonna be a major part of the game. Those guns might as well be fun to shoot. If I'm way off and there is a way to control turrets with the joystick in IL2 then please tell me. Thanks and please share your thoughts.

FB was designed with small fighters and rear gunner positions in mind.. not as a dedicated heavy bomber simulation so the emphasis with regard to gameplay code is different.

also - I'm not sure I see the advantage of using the joystick over the mouse to control gunnery. I suppose one of our intrepid community members will build a ball turret for their gameroom eventually, but until then...

Besides - you can already slave controls to whatever device you want to.. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

HoosBB, stop over to www.bombs-away.net (http://www.bombs-away.net) and you'll find lots of stuff to improve B17. Check in a v8th Ops and we can set ya up flying missions over vGermany too. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Thanks for the offer GT182, I'll go hang out there once I get the hang of B-17. I'm having one small problem with B-17 though. I can't taxi. I've followed the instructions in the manual but the rudders don't control the planes movement when taxiing. I unlock the tail wheel and everything. What am I doing wrong? I feel really stupid asking this because I've never had a simple problem like this in a Flight Sim. Thanks.

And about using the joystick, I just think it adds to the imersion, It feels more authentic even though I can't build my own gunner position. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-sad.gif
I also meant that the joystick could be used in the rear gunner positions. I know it sounds stupid but it would be a big improvement. Also, Luthier has said that PF will have more of an emphasis on bombers in PF. This would make flying those beasts more enjoyable. Thanks again

Hoosbb, the best way to taxi a four engine behemoth such as the B-17 is not to use the rudder only, but to use the engines together with the wheel brake. If you want to swing to the right, idle your engines, hit the brakes, then select your left engines, and rev em up. You will soon swing to the right. To swing to the left, repeat using the right engines. On heavy aircraft the rudder generally only works when the aircraft is travelling at speed.

That's right as Tooz_69GIAP says but you also need to use your brakes. make sure you look in the Control Menu for B17 II to make sure you have the correct keys for the brakes.

You can also find info at BA that will help you out. We've got posts that cover just about anything for the game. Look in the B17 FF Forum.

What do we think? What do I think?

I think you should go and play that B-17II as much as you like because like you said, Il-2 is just a "Stupid Mini game"

RAAF_Edin:

You ******. He's saying that firing the guns from a gunner's position is a mini-game within Il-2, not that Il-2 is itself a mini game.

Read the post before you **** off.

Call yourself a "******". He asked for an opinion and I gave him mine. And here is another:

You can go with him.

Please don't be offended Edin, I wasn't calling IL2 a minigame, I was only saying the gunner positions in IL2 were lacking. IL2 is the best game I've ever played. I shouldn't have used such harsh words. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/88.gif
I'll take your sensitivity and feelings into consideration the next time I post a message so lil' Edin won't get all upset. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/59.gif

And thanks to you all for your help with B17 take off. I feel stupid for not being able to figure that out. Cheers!
