We have heard that a North Africa Map may be soon included. 335th and 336th Hellenic Squadrons fought in N.Africa during the WW2. We have all the skins and markings needed for the Spitfires and Hurricanes used by the two squadrons and, we just wonder if it could be possible Greece to be included to the FB nations. We have all skins and markings available.
Thank you

Definetly a bump for adding Greek squadrons to FB.

I must admit I was not aware of Greece's wartime aviation history, which is kinda suprising given my interest in Operation Marita and Mercury. Does anyone know where toi find any information on these very interesting units??

Well, most information comes from books in Greek... Few things can be found at Hellenic Airforce official page (http://www.haf.gr) and herehttp://koti.welho.com/msolanak/allaerosk.htm
A few things about 336 and 336 pilots with airkills:

336th Fighter Squadron - RHAF (336 Mira - Royal Hellenic Air Force)
was formed on 25 February 1943 at Landing Ground 219 in the Western
Desert, as the second Greek fighter squadron in the Desert Air
Force. 336th RHAF Squadron wasn't just a foreign maned squadron, but
a full established air force under the command of RAF. It was
employed on shipping protection and air defence duties off the
Libyan coast until September 1944, when the squadron moved to Italy
with No.335. After flying sweeps over the Balkans, both squadrons
moved to Greece for attacks on German-held islands in the Aegean. In
May 1945, No.336 moved to Salonika, where it was disbanded on 31
July 1946.

As to gunnery passes, the best was when you dived with speed, made one pass, shot an opponent down quickly, and pulled back up..... The secret was to do the job in one pass; it could be from the side or from behind and I usually tried to open fire at about 150 feet.

Hello all.

When Oleg had me do the Spitfire Vb and Hurri squadrons I did a lot more besides those. 335 Squadron (Hurri MkI, IIB, IIC, Spit Vb in M.E) and 336 Squadron (Hurri IIC in M.E) RAF were included in those I did, so with luck you might see them appear in the squadrons list for the RAF soon. (That's no guarantee BTW, as I did something like 240+ squadrons worth, and Oleg says he's not putting them all in. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif ), but I would think he'd put in the foreign squadrons in RAF service as at least it satisfies the patriotic people who want to emulate their country's heroes. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Again though, that's up to Oleg (congrats to Oleg BTW on becoming a daddy). http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I'd just like to clarify that the files were the data files (like you have in the regiments folder) and nothing to do with skins per say. (I have made some skins for FB (mainly NZ Stuff) but didn't make any included in FB or AEP).

It just means if they are in you should have the following squadron options in the RAF sections of the FMB, QMB and On-line play):

"335 Squadron (Greek) RAF" (with code letters of FG) and
"336 Squadron (Greek) RAF" (with no code letters (or ZZ) as no evidence was present of code letters used by them).

There were criteria (ie must have been squadron-wide use of the badge etc), and as most RAF units didn't have/weren't permitted badges on planes during wartime most don't have one. (About 40 had confirmed use and most of them were 300-series & 400-series squadrons (things like the Czech logo, Canadian maple leaf emblem etc)).

Ares_336sqn
04-15-2004, 01:21 AM
335 RHAF Spitfires and Hurricanes used the letters FG (meaning Fighter Greek).
336 RHAF Hurricanes used the letters KC
336 RHAF Spitfires did not use any letters at all.
The 336 badge can be seen in the second photo in post #3 .Was used on some 336 Spitfires
Again, thank you for your work Owl_NZ. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

If you follow the links to the two Greek squads you might find historical photos of their pilots in that era. Try to design your pilot skins accordingly.

I thought a lot before i make this request. I mean, everybody asks for something. I want this, i want that, i want the other. Then, i realized that many people did not know about wether Greece even took part to the war.! Greece lost 2.5 million people, and is first in losses in relation to its population, 1/3... Greece was also the first country that actually had a military success against the Axis... Not to mention it took 7 months for Axis to conquer Greece when other larger countries fell in a few days...Now, isn't that what you could call Forgotten Battles... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-sad.gif
But, then again, nobody made a movie about it, so it did not happen.
Anyway, a lingering request is really like begging, so i will not post here anymore..I think this thread served its purpose..

To Ares_336sqn

If you or someone else send enough samples about Greek markings, complete
Greek speech pack (i think it is the hardest problem) and info about champaign
(or the champaign itself, what is even better) i think you'll get Greece
included in no time. Otherwise there is nobody to work on it. Devteam must be
very busy with BoB and patches.

For example, there is Japan as avaliable side in AOE, but without speechpack,
champaigns etc there is not really matter, is it in the game or not.

I totally second what Ares had to say about the Greek fighting spirit. Greece was the only country in WWII that had to be invaded twice. First by the Italians who were repelled, and then by the Italians, spearheaded and supported by German troops. Greek Fighting spirit is LEGENDARY. For a race of people that like nothing better than to laugh, sing, dance and love , they can be incredibly tough when you come into their backyard. Just look at what happened to the German Paratroop assault in Crete.

We are talking about avition too http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
When Axis capture Greece, many aviators continue fight.Formed up 2 squadrons.under English command as RAF squadrons.
Summary here (http://www.hellenic-sqn.gr/EN/docs/general/history.html),here (http://www.haf.gr/gea_uk/istoriauk9.htm) and here (http://www.haf.gr/gea_uk/istoriauk10.htm).
Ares start this post for these squadrons.
By the way, during the Axis (Ialian @ German )invasion of Greece, many Allied Squadrons fought over Greece.Greatest British Ace ,Pattle (http://www3.mistral.co.uk/k5083/ACES.HTM) , died like a hero here.
Complet list of Greek aviators during WWIIhere (http://server-mat.fce.vutbr.cz/safarik/ACES/aces1/greece2.html).(ONLY pilots above 1 probable kill .)
I beleive this post is relative with aviation.

S!
First I would like to ask Oleg to please consider the request to make the 335th & 336 Greek Squadrons available in the game. 2nd I would like to respond to Leadspitter. I am an American & I fly with the 336sqn. You will note that the Greeks that respond to your post will do it with Honor. Please do not write on a matter of which you know little. I can tell you the Greeks I know are men of honor & you show deep disrespect with your comments. If you are an American & I believe you are.......please do not dishonor me & the other American pilots who enjoy flying with these gentlemen. If I have been rude ......I am sorry. I am trying to ask you to be the type of man the flag you have on your post represents. If America fought with Honor...so did Greece. Show some respect....please.

Hi guys!I'm working onsome pilotskins for the Greek Squadrons.I have prodused the first two a Flight Sergeant and a Flight Officer. They are equiped with standard seat type parachute harnesses, the former with leather type B helmet the latter with type D cloth. They both are dressed in a mixture of War Service Dress (blouse) and Khaki Drill Dress (trousers),so typical for the theatre of operations.Note the sweater that is worn under the blouse.I'm not sure about the country insignia patch on the upper arm.Did Greeks had this insignia like other Allied or Comonwelth countries that fought along with RAF?I would appretiate ypur help on this.Tell me what do you think about these skins.Tomorrow I'll be back with "Mae West" versions.

So, the answer to your question is no...they did not have the same insiqnia. Here is a more typical unifrom:

Also, ranks were 2nd Lt, 1st Lt, Captain, Major, etc. You can find proper insiqnia here: Hellenic Airforce (http://www.haf.gr) (..hmm..site is down right now)

From the above photos (thanks a lot!) I can see that the pilots are dressed in the way I depicted them.Except the "Mae West" which I'm going to add today. Thanks for the country insignia patch detail.I didn't Know we didn't have NCO pilots during WWII.I'll make the corrections. Thanks again!

I removed the wrong insignia and added a Mk1 life-jacket.What do you think? You'd rather prefer the Khaki Drill shirt better?I can make variations, but I can't model shorts.

I was conducting a further reserch on uniforms and rank insignia and I found a very interesting pic showing the CO Epismenagos (Major) Kellas and officers of 335 celebrating the succesfull raid on the 20th Italian Army Corps Headquarters(26-10-42).They are all dressed in the same way. They must be wearing the Heavy Duty Dress(which was brown)though and not the War Service Dress(blue-gray)which according to my references was not issued until mid'43(the pic is b/w).The interesting thing about this pic is that the rank insignia,on the shoulder straps, seemed to be taken from the Khaki Drill Dress!Have you seen this pic? It's from the Aeroporiki Istoria(Aviation History) magazine, issue 10,April-May 2001.Unfortunately I don't have a scanner to post it.

Hi Elephant.
Good work with the pilot BMPs http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
If we are talking about the mission i have in mind, all 8 Hurricanes were shot down by AAA.Most of the pilots bailed in the desert as they were RTB, so, this pic must have been taken another day, perhaps even months later? I find difficult to believe they would take a photo that day.
Now, it should not be very difficult to include this roundel in the the game.. http://users.otenet.gr/~st_roum/roundel.jpg That is all we ask for!
