View Full Version : University of Trials (Class 8 - October 16 - FINAL CLASS)

Hi guys,

I've created a new YouTube series called the 'University of Trials'. Like many of you, I've spent my fair share of time helping others to improve at Trials. We all know that starting out in this game can be difficult and unfortunately, many players get to the really difficult parts and just stop playing. The University of Trials is there to help those players through that.

In the coming weeks/months, I will produce a number of these 'classes' and I would really appreciate feedback on them, both from the content perspective, but also on what obstacles/tracks you are struggling with.

Hope you enjoy the series and don't forget to subscribe, Retweet, share and all that other good stuff that gets the word out and ensures that I can keep making them http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon/wink.gif

I remember one of my buddies getting T2SE when it came on Steam. He said how cool it was etc, but stopped playing after passing the third tutorial track with 70+ faults. http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon/razz.gif

Exactly. That game was also insanely hard. Not trying to pretend to be the best rider, but we all have skills that many others would benefit from, so I just want to share some of that.

Thanks man. That was exactly what it started out like, but decided I needed to make the effort to make these a bit different and once I got started, I had to see it through. Took a while to make but I'm pretty happy with the results. Still learning and improving every time I worked on it. Lighting, green screens, audio recording, acting (sort of), remembering lines, editing, graphics, ... But loved every minute of it. Appreciate the feedback.

Am curious as where you filmed this though... you mentioned it was Sydney was that 'set up'? I went to UNSW, so I'm guessing one of the other unis?

EDIT: disregard the above; I was only half way through when I commented... I see the green screen in the ending now xD

No idea how frequently. This episode took way longer than I had planned because I had to re-shoot and re-record just about everything, had to design logos, do some basic animation and a few other challenges. Now that I have a decent set up, I should get faster, but I still have a job and wife and kid and normal life stuff going on... so I can't make any promises. In hindsight I should have made 3-4 eps before I went live, but I wanted to get it out before the Gold launch. Oh well... I'll figure it out. I expect a couple of weeks before the next one but i'll see what I can get done.

Be sure to let me know that you are Aussie and keen for a code on here for extra points http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon/wink.gif*

Thanks to you and all those who have let me know what you think of the series. Im thinking of, now that I have set the stage, doing less of the class room style stuff and start to just get into the lessons quicker. Still not sure, but look forward to making more of these and getting into more of the complex obstacles.

Thanks mate, the Campus is always open if you are ever in town http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon/smile.gif

I'm still very much learning so really appreciate the feedback. I have actually been working as hard as I could promoting this on places like reddit (/r/trialsEvolution) and facebook (Universityof.Trials) and twitter (@UniOfTrials) and as many forums that would let me sign up and immediately post ads promoting a new channel (turns out very few of them will haha) and even spending a bit of time on Twitch.tv but I hadn't thought about XBLA so will look into that now... Also feel free to post these whereever you want. I guess if people see it coming from me it looks like self promotion (it is!) but coming from people who feel the series would help others is just a normal post.. so please share it if you want and I will check out the boards.

Thanks again.

When is Lesson 3 coming out?

I'm working on it right now. Have had some stuff going on so just wanted to sort a few things out and then I should be getting back into a more regular structure. As soon as it's all ready I will update. I'm hoping for something in the next few weeks but I can't promise anything yet.

EDIT: Oh but as a small bonus, I am going to release a short vid or maybe a few of them just tackling obstacles that some people have requested tips on.. as part of the extra credit style of short vids I have started also.

I must say I'm amazed someone got past the pipes then had trouble on that wall. Those pipes are brutal and the hardest obstacle in the game by a huge margin in my opinion.

Also Shady, didn't you have a full beard in the Redlynx visit video? You can't be a proper professor without the full beard mate. Beard up, beard brother!

haha I didn't tell anyone my reasons but I actually grew that full beard just for my trip to Finland. It was my way of paying my respects on sacred ground.. also gave me an excuse to beard up.. I always have a beard but it's usually more trimmed like what you see so thats unlikely to change any time soon. It's actually been funny to think about consistency through the series, having the beard the same, the hair the same and the same outfit.. I delayed filming once because I had just had a hair cut and I wanted to keep the same hair style.

Thanks again for the kind words to anyone that left me a message (facebook, twitter, forums, reddit, XBL etc).

I also wanted to clarify that the extra credit classes are really about a single obstacle rather than a technique and so far have been based on a request I received. I'm just doing them to break up the format a little. The regular class structure will be back, i'm just waiting on a few things.

Yeah I totally agree about the pipes on this track and I am sure I'll be back there soon.. have a look at the fault count on that track during the class... I had like 12 faults on those pipes haha.

Oh and I went out and bought a new jacket (best $8 i've spent and it's a fake Ralph Lauren so it's also cool as hell. I'm planning on wearing that from class 4 onwards as class 3 is already filmed. I will also have that for E3, along with Professor FatShady business cards and shirts I had printed http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon/smile.gif The jacket I've been wearing was WAY too tight. I mean I think I covered it well in the series so far, but some nights I lose feeling in my arms. When I take it off after filming, I almost have to dislocate my arms. I laugh every time I do it.. It was a mates jacket from a fancy dress party that he left at my place years ago and is at least 4 sizes too small.. maybe more. http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon/smile.gif

Sounds like you're having a blast mate.

In one of those crazy coincidences that happen from time to time, the very day that I watched that video of your trip to Finland, I ran into you in MP that night (this is probably 5 or 6 months ago).

I was riding like a total muppet because I was rummaging around trying to find my damn headset to say hi. Found them on completion of our second round, then plugged in the second you DC'd. Missed an opportunity to meet the legend. Oh well, maybe one day. http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif

Look man, I know it's your face and all that, but allow me to make one final, and I think you'll find, highly persuasive argument for full beardom:

Sent you an FR mate. And that was not an excuse for my appalling performance. The true reasons are these:

1. I was only new to the game (somehow missed HD sadly, one of the few regrets of my life in retrospect).
2. I was really, really, properly drunk.

Might well be a different story if we were to go beard to beard nowadays. Will you be joining us in ZeroFault's competition? Or have you abandoned us poor Xboxers?

Speaking of beards, apologies to Crow and everyone else who was offended by that film clip as it probably doesn't translate well to an international audience. In my defense, I'd only heard the song on the radio and thought the lyrics were bloody hilarious; I'd never watched the whole film clip until just now.

Hey FatShady, I have recently just watched your university of trials class 3. It was a very good and helpful video, I just wanted to point out a couple tips, I know it's very ironic, someone teaching the teacher, but as a top rider I have found some things out that help http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon/smile.gif I don't want to put you down at all because it is an amazing video and everything is pretty much correct.

One part of the video, if I'm right it's at: 2:45-2:50, you go on saying that when you hit the platform your wheels should be as close to parallel as possible, where as this is not the case, I know it works well and is probably the easiest way for beginners to learn but it isn't the best method. The best and most consistent way to land is by landing on your back wheel first then leaning forward and putting your front wheel down. I'm sure you can understand the logic as you said in the video the engine and all the power of the bike comes from the back. And by having your back wheel land first it allows the bike to stay as firm as possible, and by converting the weight onto the front of the bike just after landing, stops you from doing a big wheelie and flipping back. If you watch your video where you are on logging on around 2:50, you can see when you land parallel your bike still bounces and falls backwards. If you are confused I can gladly demonstrate it in a private match or if not you could possibly watch a replay of mine on any track that has it e.g. The Wreck, Inferno (on the big drop down and on the pallets). If you want to watch my replays then I'm #3 on Inferno and #7 on the wreck.

Another thing I noticed in the video is when you were showing the example on storm drain at 4:35-4:40, you show the first example and say it is the wrong way to do it, where as it is actually the fastest way to do the obstacle and I'm pretty sure that is in my replay http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_asleep.gif'm #2 on it if you want to watch it).

I know that for what you are showing that it is the easiest way to do the obstacle and some of the people watching are beginners and want to learn simple methods before advanced methods; I just wanted to point out those couple points for you http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon/smile.gif I don't mean any offence and think the videos are all great, everything is spot on and you should keep it up! Just wanted to share my experience and knowledge with you http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon/smile.gif I'm very picky and I'm sure you've helped a lot of people and I'm just splitting hairs http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon/smile.gif Keep up the good work bud! , Venomz.

FatShady Live

Hey FatShady [insert post above] Venomz.

Yeah they are all very valid points. When I said to land as close to parralell as possible I did mean that the rear wheel should go first and I did mention that as you pointed out when i talk about it being a rear wheel drive bike etc but agree I could have been clearer. In hindsight I could have worded that a little better.

As for the second point, I've always intended for this class to be aimed at new riders and to make the game easier to even complete an extreme track. My goal is to produce a series to help every player, if they watch and learn, to be able to complete each extreme track and to possibly zero fault some of them. After that, I think most people will be good enough where they don't need a class like this but who knowns where I go with it.. For the first semester at least (about 8 classes) I want to focus on the basics up to completeing extremes but thats all.. speed running extremes and ninja's are not currently on my to do list just because that is such a small percentage of the players who want this and they are disproportionaly represented aroung here http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon/wink.gif

I take no offence whatsoever and openly admit that I am not the best rider around here and everything you said was totally valid. I'm not even sure where I am ranked atm because I have not played recently apart from making vids, but when I have worked at it I was around top 300 or so. BUT as you all know the difference between top 300 ( I think I'm about 600+ now?) and top 100 and top 10 is amazingly huge and there is always tips I could get from other riders.

Perhaps what this is pointing out to me is that I may benefit from getting some people to review the video's before I release them just to make sure the techniques are being taught correctly. Let me think about that for a while. I make everything totally from start to finish including coming up with the lesson plans and the tips so there is always a risk with a game like this that I miss something and appreciate you taking the time to point that out.

I think you did a great job man. It's clearly aimed at beginners. The breakdown of the movements and the reasons for doing so were very well explained and understood. Your doing a great job with a great series that has, is, and will help a lot of people. Beginners AND experienced people.

I'm not super stoked about the series being moved to ubisoft's channel, BUT it will get you a LOT more exposure and that's always good.

Keep up the great work man. Look forward to the next lesson!!!

I'm not super stoked about the series being moved to ubisoft's channel, BUT it will get you a LOT more exposure and that's always good.

I have been working non stop to use every possible avenue (reddit, twitter, facebook, twitch, forums, blogs etc) to get my subscribers up on my own channel and while it was slowly building, in 2 months I accumulated just over 6,000 views (all videos, combined total) and gained just over 440 subscribers.

In 12 hours on the Ubi channel, the latest video has been seen over 1,000 times.

I'm super excited about getting on the Ubi channel because it's the type of exposure I could never hope for. This is something that I have always seen as a great part of Ubi getting involved. Also, I see no negatives at all because as you would have seen, there has been zero change in the format apart from some cosmetic changes for RLTV. Absolute win/win for me.

Finally, On both the RedlynxTV and my UniversityOrTrials channels, we have embedded the UoT playlist so you can use whatever method you like to view the content http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon/smile.gif

I know it's a total win win situation for you. I'm happy for you, I would have done the same thing. The only reason I said that , (and keep in mind, I am already a ubisoft subscriber) is the content that ( I ) like to watch gets buried because they upload so much content. I'm also not happy about how neglectful the ubisoft channel has been towards RLTVs section. They have only a handful of videos set aside in the playlist for them. As long as it gets posted in here I'm cool either way!

Like I said before though, I'm happy for you and you did the smart thing by having your series on their channel.

About the hill at "The Wreck", you can just tap the gas continuously and ride up instead flying up and back again and then up.

For the high hills like that on Dark city run, Inferno 3 that you ride up from a flat ground, I do always to this: http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon/geek.gif
1st: lean forward before you go up to hill.
2nd: when you're on the curved ramp, lean backward.
3rd: immediately after 0.2s lean forward.

I always do this way, and I don't know if (least me) it's possible with your way. http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon/think.gif

Anyway, good idea with the Ubi channel http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon/smile.gif , I hoped RedLynx would've done this before with the RLTV tuts & picks.

As for Class 4 you can make a tutorial how to make wheelies by leaning forward and backward and how to hook over with the back wheel & brake to save time.
You can also give some examples why longer in the air is slower than when speeding on the line, and also show what the brake is good for for some techniques.

I'm always happy to help someone http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon/smile.gif I don't want to go to about making out to everyone I know it all, but if I could benefit someone to make their video better, ASWELL as helping many beginner riders that little bit extra then I can't really say no if you would give me the pleasure to let me help http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon/smile.gif
I've done many one to one sessions with friends and have helped them from faulting on a part of an obstacle on e.g. on Inferno, on the double barrel jump, some of my less experienced friends will be faulting many times, so I will restart the game, and actually try that obstacle with them over and over and try to explain an easy way; (just like what you do in your video) and then usually after a few attempts they say 'oh okay I see' 'that works better' etc etc.

I'm very glad you didn't take it in a bad way, I thought you might of taken offence as I thought as you had taken so long and I'm here trying to split hairs isn't appropriate.

Anyway, IF you do want some more constructive feedback or anything then I am ALWAYS willing to help and it would be an honour to http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon/smile.gif ,Venomz

Thanks, I'm trying to experiment a little with new techniques in each episode, but only if it makes sense for the tutorial. I was really happy I got the controller animation to work (kind of) and that will continue to make an appearance when needed and now after class 4, the techniques should start getting a little more in depth. Good fun though and really enjoying making them. It's something that I have always wanted to do but never had the time.

in dark city you kinda forgot to tell where to start when using that technique, because if you use it further away from the ramp you go too fast to make that transition and you will lose grip

Excellent class!

I think in session 4 you should touch on the fact that big air does not equate to fast times. I know in class 3 you mentioned that hitting ramps too fast can put you in an awkward spot, but even when it doesn't the faster route is usually the one with both wheels on the ground! Or how you can actually use the brake to go faster by gripping the top of ramps and whipping your bike down to avoid getting any air at all.

I win so many supercross matches on "hillbilly" and "drop in the ocean" because people are nailing those ramps instead of sneaking past them.

Im still undecided what console I will get or even if I get one day one. I have PS3 and Xbox 360 and most new games are coming out on them or PC... might wait for Fusion before upgrading?

Great vid again Shady! Had a bit of deja vu watching it for some reason. Can't think why, bloody Matrix must be playing up again.

I think we need to sort out this "Ramp Front Wheel Jump... Twist Thingy" as calling it that will create total chaos.

I propose the following naming conventions be applied for the two main applications of this technique:

1. The Switch Jump

Used to reduce height off a jump and get you down to the ground quicker. Front wheel goes over the lip of the ramp with the rider leaning forward. Brake may be applied as well once the front wheel has cleared the lip to catch the back wheel and spin the bike down to the ground. Examples of this variation can be found everywhere in top replays, but the big jump in the middle of Sunset Stripped is the best example I can think of http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_asleep.gif might add some video later on to show this clearer).

2. The Spring Jump

Used to both reduce hang time and greatly increase distance off a ramp. The suspension of the bike is compressed at the bottom of the ramp, then releases as the front wheel clears the lip of the ramp (to reduce height) to give a good boost to distance. A good example of this is the jump over the ridiculous gap in top replays on Titan's Graveyard. The example you showed from Elevation is also one of these (kinda).

Yeah that technique that I showed was the spring jump but that would have been no where near as funny to show http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon/smile.gif I could have found a better example of it but I wanted one at the start of a map so people could practice it also. Once they get the principles understood, theoretically any replay they saw they would understand better..

Hey Euan, yeah, I think I remember them from Euphoric Fusion's tips and techniques thread. Although I couldn't find it when I had a quick look just now, could have sworn it was stickied.

Obviously I didn't make them up myself, or I would have called them something much cooler, like the Defojump versions 1 & 2. Also rather like flip jump, or flump for short. http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif

Also, are you L2G iLoGiiKz x? If so, I always loved your ending on WOTN, how you landed on the finish then somehow made the rider's arm go in the air across the line in a victory fist bump. Properly cool.

@Fatshady: I've always simply referred to it as slide-launching. The reason being that any time you are wheelie-ing while leaning forward, it's considered a slide. Whether it's using it to clear the Titan Graveyard gap, or using it to shave off time on a flat suface; it's still the same technique.

Funny how that often happens, you ride best when you're relaxed and not thinking about it too much. Didn't work out that way for me though sadly. Took a while, but I finally nailed the back wheel bounce in question and restored balance to the universe:

haha so am i... thats why the series will draw to a close next lesson.

I mean there are a bunch of Ninja techniques that I might mention in the final class, but they are really not required for the core game. I always wanted to just help people get through extremes. I was surprised but at the end of class 7, I had covered about 20 unique tips and I was really surprised that a game that only has two triggers and a thumb stick would allow me to generate that much content.

And as always, thanks all for the feedback.

The only tips I can think of would be: pushing forward before a ramp to be able to get your front wheel over it (Dunes of Hazard third major jump) and the weight back brake flip over ramp (catchy I know; the end of Suspense.)

If I can think of any more I will post.

I assume you're talking about the old "fapping" move to tap the brake to raise the rear wheel with the front wheel planted? Worth covering I reckon. Similarly, tapping the brake to increase the rotational speed of a flip is something I find myself using pretty often.

TheBlazeJp

I agree that the "fap" technique will never be needed for the core game and improving time on tracks

Unless you get a crazy time saver by clearing a gap and need to use it.
You can use it in extreme tournaments like TYM to save yourself etc
WOTN on the bench time saver you use it,
I guess we could think of more scenarios where we use it, It may be worth covering.
But its definitely a more advanced technique and is rarely used with the core gameplay of improving times on SP tracks

Great video again as usual. http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon/smile.gif

I suggest for class 8 the brake button mashing technique. That helps when you are hanging on a cylinder obstacle (i.e. last pipe on Fishy Business, the pipes on The Forge) to slide forward which is the only way when in this situation, or when your front wheel is already on a flat plaform which the rear wheel is still in unsafe area & in the air.

Other technique would be mashing the gas button when you are rolling backwards on a steep ramp like the ones in Inferno 3 or Magic Marker.

edit: Oooh, didn't realize that Defoliator already mentioned the brake button mashing. http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif

I think Im going to run out of time to cover it all in the last class tbh. I will likely cover the magic marker jump, great fire pipes, inferno pallets, rear wheel hook, fender grab and a few other fun stuff.. so it's jam packed and as I only have 2 weeks left to get it done, I think I have to stop including stuff....

Also, there is a game that was just releasted that I have put 35 hours into already and the online stuff is opened up this week.. soooooo im going to be struggling to get it completed on time as it is http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon/smile.gif

Thanks I really appreciate that. It's difficult to see if these helped people so thanks for letting me know. I don't think I'll be making any further Evo videos but hopefully I get an opportunity to do some more stuf with Fusion.

I enjoy learning about the video production and I LOVE Trials so hopefully I can make those two things come together some time.

The best thing you can do for me is to spread the word and get more people to watch.

Thanks again for the kind words.

Series is finished for Evo but if I do end up making anything for Fusion I'll keep that in mind (assuming there is a donkey, or bmx or whatever?
