Hi Guys!

I'm looking at building a new PC soon, and would like it powerful enough to run IL2 FB in Perfect Mode, without sluggishness or low frame-rate.

So, what would you recommend for Motherboard, Graphics Card etc. etc.

I'm currently running on a rig I built a couple of years ago:

DDR system:
1.4GHz TBird Athlon Processor
512MB Memory
DDR supported m/board
Leadtek GeForce 3 64MB graphics card
Creative 5.2 dolby surround system
22" monitor
And all the other bits that go with it etc. etc.

So - what would be the ultimate system for this - that is easy enough to get hold of? (and doesn't cost 5000!!!) - I'm in England by the way.

Cheers

Mogs

You probably spotted the 5.2 typo - should read 5.1......

you might consider getting a better video card, other than that it looks pretty good.

most t-bird motherboards will let you run a AMD 2400+ 133fsb

with the new patch a 2400+ with a reasonable graphics card will handle perfect settings

Listen to Buzz! Perfect isn't worth the effort, i mean, does it improve the FM? The water looks crap and the high poly landcape in the distant kills to many fps. There are people who fly in Perfect with 35fps max, but i just can't stand that. Switch to Exellent and fly with a much higher fps rate and visuals which are still awesome and more than enough /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif .

It's probably going to be at least six months to a year before PCs are fast enough to run FB in perfect. So I don't think it's sensible to try and build up a PC with the expectation of playing in perfect with uninterrupted high frame rates at the moment. Of course, one can build a PC to give astonishing frame rates in excellent...

If you wanted to put a PC together in the UK, you can hop over to www.dabs.com (http://www.dabs.com) and get yourself an 800 MHz FSB motherboard (~ 150), a 3.06 GHz 800 MHz FSB P4 (~ 344) and a graphics card of the 9700 Pro, 9800 Pro or 5900 Ultra type (anything from ~ 220 - 350). Throw in a bit of DDRRAM (~ 120) and reuse your drives etc and you should have a leading-edge technology machine for an upgrade cost of ~ just over 1,000. This spec is pretty much what BuzzU has and he doesn't seem to suffer from poor FPS.../i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif .

Regards,

RocketDog.

PS - Tom's Hardware have recently done some group reviews of graphics cards and motherboards which are very useful in this sort of thing. I've been toying with updating my own system, but will probably wait until later in the year for 800 MHz FSB component prices to drop a touch.

Right Rocket. That was my point. I believe I have all the latest hardware right now, and still don't use the perfect setting. It's just not worth getting the latest hardware right now if your only goal is to use the perfect setting.

Oleg has said that the perfect setting is for future systems. I believe him.

Well, i know a guy who has P4 3,06Ghz rig with the GF FX and he doesn't play in perfect either due to the lower fps rate. No everybody likes low fps rates. I'd like to know what the average fps of Buzz is and which detail settings he uses.

John,

Here's the results of the first two minutes of the Black Death track. I used 1600 res and no fsaa. The game setting was excellent. This was just for this teast. Normally i'd use 4x or 8x fsaa. There is one spot on this track where the fps jumps down for a second. 99% of the time, it won't see the 20's at all.

Thanks, but i thought you would give me your fps rates while using Perfect /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif . It seems that some people can play it without problems, although fps rates are also subjective.
I guess you also have a 3,2Ghz P4 or something similar? I wonder why some can play Perfect with such a puter and some not.

Well, you certainly dont need perfect mode for flying online. that is unless you want pretty ground to crash into lol. I can understand people curious about how it looks. I have never tried perfect online. I use it when I'm just messing around offline. Fps for me is around 40 and drops into the high teens depending on what is happening around me. I drop ground textures to a lower setting when online.

John,

The guys who are running perfect are letting their fps drop lower than I will. Smooth play is more important to me. I do use perfect offline though. I can keep the fps pretty high if I don't go to crazy with res and fsaa.

I'm not sure why the fps gets so low on the Black Death track. I never see fps that low on normal play.

Hunter,

You don't count! You have some overclocked, water cooled, turbine powered monster. Pfffffffft...

btw..I don't want to o/c mine, but if I did. What can a 3.2 be taken too?

Well my brother in law has his 3.0 @ 4 Ghz so I think you would be safe around there. I'm at 3.6 and comfortable...later on when prices drop I`ll go to a 3.2, I'd say with liquid I could 4.5 if the processor can handle it..... most Intels can do 1.2 over rated easily given proper cooling.

Do me a favor so I can see how much faster you are. Use Fraps, and do the Black Death track. Wait 3 seconds when it starts, and then record two minutes. Use 1600 res and no fsaa, and use excellent settings in the game. Then just copy/paste the results from the fraps folder. I'm just curious.
