Newbie here I just purchased both IL-2 & FB I can tell I have a lot to learn. I used to play Aces over Europe and Pacific back in the day. I already downloaded all the latest patches.

What does everybody use for a joystick?? Also I want I am interested in the alternate skins and authentic aircraft markings, is there a good place to get these? Also more aircraft I have done some searches and can't seem to find more aircraft is there a 3rd party place were people have added more aircraft, such as the DO-335 and P-38????

www.il2skins.com (http://www.il2skins.com) for all skins.

I use a Thrustmaster HOTAS joystick, superb kit buty quite expensive. Saitek X45 is a very good and cheaper alternative.

Hmm, I wonder what plane will be your favorite? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

Welcome FTD, we are glad to have you! A great stick for this sim is the Saitek X45. Cheap and has tons of buttons. (Buy the warranty if you get it from CompUSA for example). There are many like it, but this one is mine.

Third party planes are in this game, but are only added via patches and add-ons after passing the quality standards of Oleg and the 1C gang. (Doesn't work like the Microsoft flight game).

Now for your P38, it was just recently made available with the Aces Expansion Pack. Unfortunately, since you are a recent convert you will have to come up with another $30 USD to bring your Forgotten Battles up to date. We've all had to do it, but at least we had some spacing in between the purchases.

Regardless, grab the AEP and go nuts in your FTD.

So where do I get the Aces update from what I gotten the impression of it is only available in Europe. I don't mind buying it.

Does it take a while to get the hang of targeting and flying in general?? With realistic gunnery on it seems like I can unload my entire guns at aircraft even at close range and it does nothing. I am familiar with leading the target, maybe it just takes a while.

Hey devil, Aces is available in the US. Try EB games, thats where I got mine. And yes, gunnery takes awhile to learn. Ive been playing for 4 months and can barely hit anything, just keep trying, it will come in time. (at least thats what I tell myself) http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/35.gif
Welcome aboard and best of luck.

The other way 'round. It is available in the US now. EBgames is also where my copy came from.

Yes, gunnery is about the toughest thing in this sim. I used to play F18:Korea, and you just had to fire near enemy ac to get a kill.

In FB, you have to actually hit the target (and hard) in order for a kill. The only reason I've played FB for any length of time at all is because it is hard. Just when I get to thinking I'm some kind of ace, I start not being able to hit anything.

It's much like golf. Sometimes you are just not "on".

Yeah I am playing my first campaign as the Germans with the easy gunnery turned on and those #$%^$^$^#%# little I-15 biplane fighters have got to be the most annoying fighters I have encountered I can't hit them for anything.

Before you create a new campaign or quick combat mission always go into your "difficulty settings" and experiment with the functions. These are the keys for you to gradually learn from easy (arcade) to difficult ("real"). Also, read the sticky at the top of this page "Sturmovik Essentials". http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Check your convergence settings. The default in Il2 Original was 500m, dunno about FB. For air to air combat, 200m may be a better setting.
