Not sure if this has been mentioned before, but according to this great site about the Spitfire (link at buttom), the IXC should have 4x20mm cannons, not 2x20mm & 4x.303 inch guns as it has in the game. Imagine having 4x20mm cannons...hope they fix/add that in a patch!

Your question about the armament of the Spitfire Mk.IXc has already been extensively discussed and explained.

If you run a search you will find the relative thread.

In short it will say that the IXc could have 4 x 20mm but it flew better with 2 x 20mm and 4 x .303 and the four cannons were present only occasionally in the first series and later only on machines used for ground attack.

Thats confusing. I thought the C wing was 2 20's and 4 0.303's. I think they have there B and C wings mixed up on that site.

I think a few XIV's and later MK's had the 4 20mm's but I don't think there were any IX's with them.

The B wing was the first cannon wing with 2x20mm and 4x0.303 mgs. The C wing was developed as the universal wing for the markV and could carry a mixture of cannon and machine guns with a maximum of 4x20mm. The 4x20mm where rarely carried, and were primarily used by a few mark VCs in the mediterranean and North Africa, the majority of C wings carried the standard 2x20mm 4x303mgs but with double the cannon ammo. The IXC had the C wing of the Mark V but there is little evidence of this being used operationally and there are only a few photos showing very early trials aircraft with the 4 cannons (see Late Marque Spitfire Aces by Dr. Alfred Price)

Thank you Salfordian, I answered so many queries on the c wing that I ended up by answering this one without noticing it said Mk.IX not Mk.V... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

My previous answer should read Mk.V.

As Salfordian says the c wing came straight from the Mk.V but there is NO evidence that 4 x 20mm. were ever used on the Mk.IX

Don't believe everything they say on the internet.

It is generally known that the later marks of spitfires could be equiped with two sets of wings. The C version had 2X .303 and 1X 20mm in each wing and the E version had 1X .50 and 1X 20mm.

I prefer the E wing spits, the .303's are useless in such small battery and with such a large physical placements (they are placed wide apart)

C wings in theory could take 4x20mm cannons, a few of such Mk VCs saw service, but the serious weight increase with the Mk IXC burdened the structural strenght of the plane and proved prohibitive to mount more than 1x 20mm cannon in each wing, so Mk IXs, and subsequent wartime models had only a pair of cannons.

"One day a Tiger Royal got within 150 yards of my tanks and knocked me out. Five of our tanks opened up on him at ranges of 200 to 600 yards and got 5 or 6 hits on the front of the Tiger. They all just glanced off and the Tiger backed off and got away. If we had a tank like that Tiger, we would all be home today."
