Ok, I am very seriously considering upgrading from my Ti-4200 to a 9800XT 256Mb.

Can anyone give me some idea what kind of performance increase I might expect from this. For example, will perfect mode run smoothly with this card with more than a few planes? I can run perfect mode now but not well.

I know there are better cards available but I have a budget to work with and I know the Ti-4200 will disappoint me with PF.

Cheers,

Wondering why nobody's replied yet. 9800XT that's a good card. But can't say my opinion cos i dun have that card. Anyway 9600XT can run perfect >30fps with pretty heavy activity. What's your processor. People are saying it matters too.

It's a good card i think won't regret it but other hardware may need attention too, like RAM and processor.

I have XP2600 and same memory with 9800XT.
Using latest drivers I am very happy with it
but in perfect mode its good untill there is heavy traffic then it struggles a bit.More a function of CPU + more memory methinks.
In excellent mode it whips butt be sure, great card. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I have a 9800XT, slightly overclocked, and I love it...I can run perfect settings online, and it maintains fps in the 24-65 reange, depending on CPU load...having had previous generations of Nvidia cards, when I bought my 9800XT I compared it to the stable of Nvidia cards and the 9800XT was the clear winner for image quality (on my rig)...with the release of the Nvidia 6800GT, you might want to question owners of this card, before you choose.

All the best, Don

Ive also got the 9800XT 256 and I love it. But to get the full use of this card your gonna need a gig of ram and enough FSB to run the card.(thank you luckyboy). I runs smooth even in heavy action in perfect mode. I love it and I picked it up on Ebay for $240.USD. A good place to post this is in the community help fourm and let Coastie,Luckyboy,Steve V etc help ya out.

Depends on what you're paying for it. If you can get it for less than $300, sure it's a good card. But if you shop around, you should be able to find a vanilla 6800 from Nvidia. Though it has half the onboard RAM, it still outperforms the 9800XT. There's one available from BFG, overclocked and with a lifetime warranty, at outpost.com

Look around, and I'm sure you'll find one for around $250.

I have run the 9700pro and 9800pro and I can run perfect no matter what with these cards. I am sure the one with 256mb of ram can only be better. I have an nforce2 MB with an xp3200 and 1.5gig of ram. I often run missions in the FMB that have over thirty planes, ships and tanks running around along with AAA and I have no problems unless I take it up to 4X or 8X speeds. I don't think the 9800pro Video card is holding us back from running more planes at once, I think we need more computing power. The card only has to render what is on the screen, not what all the other sixty or more AI objects are doing. That is the job of the cpu and MB chipset. I don't think the new cards are neccesary for this sim. They might be in a year or two when we have a new sim with more sophisticated graphics. But we don't now so it is very smart to buy computer hardware that is yesterday's news. There are no 64bit applications or games out there. And by the time there is the 64bit hardware that will be around will make the Athlon64s that are being built now look like a PentiumI. So hang onto that AthlonXP for a few more years, it will do just fine. Heck, I put Forgotten Battles and DoomIII on a 1333Mhz thunderbird with a GF3ti500 and 768mb of ram and it handles it no problem. S!

Very good point a very simple one.. so simple in fact that I overlooked it completely but it makes a lot of sense.

That would be entirely true if it wasn't for the fact that at the moment, the 9800XT costs about as much as the new generation's vanilla 6800. Given that, why not buy the new tech?

Thanks everyone, sounds like I'm on the right track with this. Cool!

I gotta say, of all the screen shots I've seen the ones taken using the Radeon cards always look the best, they seem to have a richer more realistic looking colour.

I'm looking forward to purchasing this card.

Cheers,
CrazySchmidt.

well if it helps, i went from GFti4800 to the 9600XT 256 and FB just runs smoother, it also runs perfect settings pretty well also but personally im not into the whole fabulous looking water issue.

I have a 9800 Pro.

At 1024x768x32 it got slightly LOWER FPS than my old GeForce 3 DDR 64MB on BlackDeath. But this is a CPU limit, on the whole. However I could crank it up to 1280x960, 4xAA, 4xaniso without losing any frame rate. On less intensive missions the base frame rate is higher than the Geforce 3

Currently I've decided to run at 1600x1200 though (shame my monitor can't do more than 60Hz at that, but for a flight sim you don't notice much flicker) with no AA and the frame rates are again like the GeForce 3 at 1024x768 on Black Death.

I also have a 9800XT and can run 1600 X 1200 X 32 on Perfect with 40-60 fps in all but big cities/maps where it falls to 30-45 fps. I don't overclock either. (I suppose that my P4 3.2 and 2 gig of RAM help though).

If you can get a good price it's a great card IMO. (and I love perfect water. It looks amazing!)
