I'm amazed at the damage modelling on this bi-plane and also the cockpit representation.

The DM does not seem to have been commented upon in this forum yet to my eyes its a huge step forward. Try it on QMB and take a few screenshots. Who modelled this plane??...I'll send him a virtual beer or two !

Yes it is excellently done aircraft, and one of the few that gets visible damage from rifle caliber machine guns, which is really good and I hope more future planes will have.

It is certainly one of the more detailed planes. The J8A has the single best damage textures when viewed from cockpit and the Bf-110G2 has the nicest cockpit. The I-16 still has the best external damage textures though.

I wanted to say something about this after loading the AEP. Kudos to Haddock. The Gladiator is absolutely beautiful. It's one of the few times I've been really glad I turned on externals (offline of course, LOL) to have a look at the new planes. Great job!

I think that Mr Oreheim (who is from Sweden) is also worth some great credit for the J8A, he did a big chunk of research for it.

I totally agree! I just about fell out of my chair the first time I saw the J8A in this game. The exteriors are outstanding and the cockpit is a total work of art. It's almost photorealistic and makes a lot of the earler cockpits (IL2, Yak, etc) look almost cartoonish even though they are good. Just compare the CR42 and G50 to the Gladiator to appreciate this art.

New P51's, P39/63s, P38s, Bf110, all Fw190's, abd P80 also have nicely done cockpits

There's one downside to the J8A - almost every other aircraft in the game now needs either or both of it's damage model or cockpit redone from scratch. It's the best piece of art in the game. It's also one of the most fun to fly. I've commented elsewhere on the Matrix effects possible. Try a hard 180 turn at low-level viewed from a fixed external camera, preferrably on a ground target.

For kicks I've been devising good QMB missions for the J8A. I'm up to 4 J8A vs 4xCr.42 and 3xJu-52. I have just enough ammo to flame the three trimotors and then splash one of the Cr.42s. But anything with the Gladiator in it is fun, I haven't gotten properly stuck-in online with it, but I'm dying to see someone try and turn with it at 350kph.

Sometime soon I'll set up a 16 v. 16 and just watch the show.

I think J8 was what the swedes called their Gladiators, the J stands for Jakt, meaning fighter and twelve J8's was part of the voluntary Swedish Air Force Unit, F19, during the Winter War between Finland and the Soviet Union. So is this just an ordinary Gladiator or did the swedes make som modifications on it? Snowskis instead of wheels? Heres some info and nice cockpit photos at the bottom:

King..

The original J8 was a Swedish Mk I, bought from UK, but with different instruments (a mix of German, Swedish and English, also with a German Gunsight Revi 3a)

The J8A (which is in AEP) is a J8 (MK I) but with the engine from a MK II (840 hp). Still the same panel as the Mk I though, but with that special mix of instruments and gauges, and the later planes were fitted with the later German Revi 3c (seen in AEP).

Also the J8A was fitted with a 2 bladed wooden propeller (bigger diameter than that of the MK I though*) rather than the 3 bladed prop of a Mk II.

You mentioned the skis, so yes, that is a modification for winter. Other that it's a "normal" Gladiator...

* J8 prop diameter: 3,048 m weight: 44,5 kg
J8A prop diameter: 3,125 m weight: 49,5 kg

Thank you Mr. Haddock and F19_Orheim (and the rest of F19 I believe) for making the Gladiator.
It really is a work of art!

I wonder if anyone of you (or others) know if the norwegian Gladiators had the same cocpit interior as the swedish J8?
I believe the norwegian Gladiators were assembled in Trollh√¬§ttan, Sweden. Then they were shipped to Norway.
Or did the norwegian Gladiators have the original cocpit interior?

Thanks for all answers! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

The J8A is by far my favorite aircraft in the game now. It sets a new visual standard for virtual aircraft. And on top of that it is very satisfying to "fly".

Flew it with the skis on for the first time last night. Man, what a difference. Ever so much slower and poorer turning, which is no doubt correct, but still, I'll remember to not engage I-153s in winter anymore....

Indeed? Well it would be great if Maddox could model the chaika with retracable skis http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
http://www.dalnet.se/~surfcity/images/i-153_5.jpg

Most Chaikas did NOT have RETRACTABLE skis if I have understood it correctly. The mount of the I-15bis (which didn't have retractable gear) skis allowed to install them on I-153.... more commonly used on the I-153.
