View Full Version : Offline missions - chastisement by squadron leader

Being fairly new to this sim, I've only just gotten around to exploring the full mission / campaign features.

I flew my first offline campaign missions today and was rather getting sick of the continued chastisement by my sqaudron leader. For example, about halfway into a mission he signalled that enemy fighters were at our 12 o'clock. The squadron engaged them, myself included.

Within 30 seconds of the dogfight starting, my sqaudron leader starts shouting at me - asking me were am I going and to maintain my course (the course being the predetermined waypoints on the mission flight plan). This is something quite difficult to do when I am in the middle of a dogfight.

After trying numerous missions I found this occured repeatedly. It also occured if we are attacking ground targets. There does not seem to be any way to prevent this behaviour.

Is this "normal" (and do I just ignore him) or am I doing something wrong? And if I ignore him, are there any far reaching implications? (like demotion, disciplinary action, etc?).

Additionally, I assume if I am captured them that is the end of the campaign for me and I have to start a new one?

I too was getting tired of getting yelled at while fighting. I then started to stick to my wingman like glue. When I am an even numbered plane in a squadron I stick to the next lower odd numbered plane as much as I can. IE: I am #4 so I follow #3.
I only get yelled at when I break off from him or lose him during the fight.
Try to think like a rookie pilot would in real life and stick to your wingman. Protect him at all costs before going after your own kills.

Screw that, ignore the annoying prat and continue the mission the way you want. So long as the objectives get completed, that's what matters. It's only you and some AI after all http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Hi,

Thanks very much for the quick answers. I believe you are both right. So it boils down to how realistic I wish to be. I'm happy to do it both ways depending on how the mood takes me.

Any time you get to be more than a fixed distance from the flight leader you'll get that message (2 or 3km, I can't remember). It's automatic, so if circumstances dictate that you're at more than the trigger distance, ignore him.

alternatively, if you are doing a fighter campaign, radio the ground control to send assistance and your flight will come to you instead

Only problem is sometimes they seem to get stuck orbiting the point you radioed from until they run out of fuel http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Just ignore the bastard and carry on blasting the enemy!
Now that we are discussing radio messages - why are the Germans the only ones to shout and screem when hit or just excited. Russian dudes are too cool - never raise voice, even when hit and burning, making germans sound hysteric. Macho Russians vs. sissy Germans.

I didn't realise that the assistance worked that way. I'll try that. I just thought the aircraft came from the nearest populated airfield on your particular side.

As for running out of fuel, guess what happened to the rest of my sharp-witted squad on only my third mission? We kept patrolling this triangular area, and after a while I noticed that I would soon run out of fuel. So I ignored my leader's incessant ravings for me to stay with him and flew back to our airfield. Nearly everyone else dropped out of the sky half way back.

So I understand the "artificial" bit, I'm just having issues understanding the "intelligence" bit.

I'm half thinking I might try my campaigns starting with a higher rank. Maybe I can get a bit of order into the squad!

If your leader annoys you that much, (he does me too), then shoot the b******* down! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/smileys-gun2.gif
Ok, you'll get negative points but your buddies and the powers-that-be don't really care as they'll let you continue in the next mission. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif
The trouble is that the annoying so-and-so will be back in charge for the next mission.

You can delete or rename the wav files in samples/speech/*nationality*/actor1

You'll recognise the right files by the file-names.

in the middle of a tense dogfight with an ace, it's not easy to concentrate with some angry german shouting "STAY ON COURSE!!!!STAY ON COURSE!!!!STAY ON COURSE!!" all the time!

same thing with the IL-2 as well. in the middle of a bombing run, trying to avoid flak and 109s, some berk in the rear is shouting 'WHAT ARE YOU DOING?! ARRRGHH!!!' even when flying in a straignt line!

Delete or rename the file. There was a 15 page thread (http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif) a while back about then so called profanities in this game so pleeeeeeeeeeeease don't go there again people.

My favorite is during Sturmovik missions when your flight gets attacked by enemy fighters, your squadron mates will happily fly right along in a straight line as they are getting their @sses shot off by 109's and you'll get yelled at for evading, or even, heaven forbid, trying to shoot down your attackers! Does anyone have any idea of the real-life VVS protocol for IL-2's as far as self-defense, i.e. whether or not they were allowed to break formation to engage enemy a/c? Were there any Sturmovik aces?

Very amusing thread, gentlemen!

Oddglob - Promoting yourself doesn't solve the problem, unfortunately. In order to automatically lead anything more than a section/flight, you'll have to be at least a Colonel. Even Majors get to play #3 in flights led by a half or full Colonel!

It's always been thus, and it's always bugged me, and it's never been changed!

Essetially it means that, if you want to lead the flight/squadron, you have to give up the whole earning promotion through the ranks element, which is very much part of the offline experience for me.

The 'A but not I' thing also kills offline play. Request assistance often means the whole flight circles until they drop, even if you go off on your own! In recent BoE missions I've had flights of P51s fly straight and level through the thickest of flak (and all die); I've had a squadron of 190s bounced during landing pattern and react only by dying gracefully at the hands of the US pilots; and I've also had a flight of Spitfires destroy itself by flying into eachother (I know this happened in real life, but you should have seen it - more like suicide or booze than dodgy conditions or training!).

These three things have always meant that my IL2/FB/AEP/BoE offline experience never lasts that long, although I always end up going back after getting mercilessly rodgered online...lol!

AI squadron leaders are idiots http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/35.gif

Just create a mission (or missions) where you are the leader and fly it the way you want. Then you can direct your wingman and rotte elements as needed. Most often the AI is screwy and does what it wants but they do have their purpose.

Hi Plumps,

I notice there is another file "what_the_hell1" ("What's wrong with you?"). I think I have heard that as well in my brief experience. Is that phrase used in other contexts, or can I get rid of that one as well?

Thanks
