View Full Version : can't download DLC 'Base Game Rocksmith needed'

Hi

I'm trying to download Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen (amongst other songs) but Steam won't let me. It says that I need the base game Rocksmith, which I haven't purchased. The song shows up as DLC under RS 2014, can I not download it without buying the original RS?

Thanks
Aaradhya

It's an issue with Steam. Short answer is it's a side-effect of the way Steam protects its users from downloading DLC for games they don't own. Seems they weren't prepared for DLC that can go with two different games.

Anyway, no solution at the moment other than to buy the original RS. That said, look at the RS track list to see if it tempts you. Even with the $30 purchase price plus the $10 transfer, it's a pretty good deal in terms of the number of songs if you assume DLC pricing.

Thanks.. The thing is, I'm not really looking for the entire catalogue, one or two songs here and there would sort me out.. I've asked Steam support to help. Hopefully they can resolve this...

Good luck. They claim to have been "working on it" for several months now. So far the only resolution has been to buy the original game.

I am looking to do the same thing. I just want to buy the Santana pack and Thrill is gone by B. B. King. We own the 2014 version of the same game, so why cant we have the same music from an older version of the same game...I spent 80.00 for Rocksmith 2014, and to have to spend another 30 for the original game and then a 10.00 transfer fee to play just a couple of songs is absolutely ridiculous...

Do we know when they are supposed to fix this problem, so those of us who spent 80.00 on the 2014 version can get all the songs from both versions instead of paying another 40.00 to get 4 songs?

Steel_Nirvana
01-28-2014, 01:31 AM
It's a Steam issue, and I haven't heard that there's a timeline yet. To be fair, though, your $40 would get you quite a few more than 4 songs, with the average price each less than the DLC goes for. But you don't have to do that--I'm sure it'll be fixed at some point.

Given that it's been about 4 months now and there is no light at the end of the tunnel I'm starting to think that it isn't going to be possible to buy DLC from the original Rocksmith for 2014 without buying the original. I don't see why Steam can't fix this issue but then again I'm not a software engineer so I don't know what all it would entail.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure where this would prioritize in Steam's to-do list. It may be easy, but just doesn't rise to the level of having resources allocated against it. Or it may be difficult and they've done a cost-benefit. Ubisoft said they're working with Steam to resolve it, IIRC, but no one's mentioned timelines.

Just to be precise, you don't have to pay the $10 transfer fee to buy the Santana pack and The Thrill Is Gone. The $10 is to transfer all 50 or so on-disk songs from RS1 to RS2014. The $30 purchase of the original game will enable you to buy RS1 DLC and play it in RS2014. That being said...of course you'd probably want the 50+ songs for 10 bucks after you paid the $30.

My advice is to wait for another Steam sale if you don't want to spend the bucks. RS1 was as low as 5 or 10 bucks not that long ago.

Speaking of "customer service", didn't the guys who started it used to work for Microsoft? :)

Yea: Gabe Newell and Mike Harrington

After having dropped out of Harvard University (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harvard_University)[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gabe_Newell#cite_note-2) Newell spent thirteen years working for Microsoft Corporation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft), ultimately becoming a "Microsoft Millionaire". Newell has described himself as "producer on the first three releases of Windows".[3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gabe_Newell#cite_note-cvg-3) Inspired by Michael Abrash (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Abrash), who left Microsoft to work on the computer game Quake (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quake_(video_game)) at id Software (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Id_Software), Newell and another Microsoft employee, Mike Harrington (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Harrington), left Microsoft to found Valve in 1996.[3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gabe_Newell#cite_note-cvg-3) He and Harrington used their money to fund Valve through the development of Half-Life (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Half-Life_(video_game)).

Previously a games developer at Dynamix (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynamix) and a developer on the Windows NT (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_NT) operating system (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operating_system) at Microsoft (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft),[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Harrington#cite_note-2) Harrington founded Valve in 1996 with Gabe Newell (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gabe_Newell), another former Microsoft employee. Ubisoft could easily work around the Steam limitation by having new RS2014 catalog entries for the RS1 DLCs. I tried to buy Freebird today by got blocked because I only have RS2014. If there was an RS2014 entry in addition to the RS1 entry all would have been fine.

Ubisoft, we are trying to buy your products. Help us!

I might be completely missing something here, but isn't the queen pack (including bohemian rhapsody) available in the uplay shop? Or does steam stop you anyway when you try to buy it via Uplay shop?

Well, after two minutes of actually looking at it, it turns out that if you press shop and select the song, it directs you to steam.

It shouldn't be that hard to clear the rocksmith songs for RS 2014. should it.

02-01-2014, 04:29 PM
When you pick one of these songs from the shop in the game .it states that you need Rocksmith2014 to play it and the content may differ from the original so how can Steam think it's for the original game???

This problem is absolutely crazy. I bought Rocksmith because I was lead to believe I could play ANY dlc song, and the list looked pretty cool. Fact is now since buying the game, most of the dlc Im interested in is not from the RS2014 game and as such Im stuck.

This really bugs me. Is there anything we can do, in a more organised effort, where we could do something to get the developers and/or steam's attention?

Well, for 40 [insert currency here], you get a bunch of additional music, plus the ability to buy all the DLC.

Or you could be patient.

I could be misleaded, but this issue reminds me so much of experiences i have had with games before ... The average wait for anticipated updates/fixes is a matter of several years, on average. Publishers or producers don't normally consider it worthwhile to do. I just selected 50$ worth of DLC, as a first batch for me to play with. I can't seem to get it down. This is kind of depressing, especially if it means that Rocksmith is going to flop like that, based on DLC as it is.

I got a little hopeful today when the Steam client updated itself with the following release notes:

General

Renamed family features to better disambiguate between Family Library Sharing and Family View.
Fixed a case where reconnecting to Steam would cause the client to switch back into Family View
Show “invalid file system” if a game tries to install files larger than 4GB on FAT32
Make "View Community Hub" item in a game's context menu go to the game hub if available.
Ukrainian language support added to the Steam Client
Fixed applying wrong region restrictions in some cases
Fixed installing from old retail install discs
Fixed region restrictions for F2P games in some cases
Fixed launching games requiring product keys for DLC (Uplay games etc)
When installing a game, put it at the end of the download queue instead of the front

....but turns out that "fix" wasn't related to our problem. Also, as an update, installing the free RS demo will not allow downloading the dlc content. Someone had the foresight to lock out the ability to purchase add-ons for that demo, cleverly preventing the company from any revenue that might provide.

More and more this is looking to be a case of people quite satisfied with the status quo and enjoying the additional RS1 game sales required to allow the legacy DLC. :(

unfortunately, i would not consider myself as being incredibly clever in that sense ^^ and so i would be meandering to and forth between the old and new version. Or is there some way to import the songs/DLC ? I read something about but could find nothing in the steam shop.

Yes just purchase it and have it in your Steam inventory. If you want the original songs (on disc) in 2014 you just have to purchase the import tool which is $9.99

That's not what's being claimed at all, and the comment was right on point. UbiSoft claims it is a Steam issue. Over on the Steam forums they claim UbiSoft should have looked into the delivery capabilities more before releasing the game. The reality is that this affects such a small subset of RS users that it's probably not financially beneficial to either company to fix the limitation within Steam. On top of that, instead of supporting fellow members of the user community we have senior members in both places telling newer users to stop whining and go away when this is a legitimate complaint and error with the way the software is being delivered and the only legal workaround is at the user's additional expense.

So, how is asking UbiSoft to find another software delivery vehicle for this limited issue ridiculously misguided? Why can't they just put those original dlc songs in the UbiSoft store for people to download along with all the Assassin's Creed and Tom Clancy shooter stuff that's already in there? Why can't they e-mail RS2014 U-Play users a special offer coupon to buy RS1 activation codes at a dramatically reduced rate ($5-$10) so we can buy their other DLC on Steam and be done with this? Just do something to make this right for the subset of users that this affects. That's not whining, that's just asking to be treated properly, and the rest of the user community should recognize the difference.

I'm not exactly informed on the topic but are there any games that you can buy off UPlay and not use Steam at all? I don't think UPlay is a content delivery system like Steam, it's merely a Rewards/DRM verification layer

Inasmuch as complaining bitterly that someone else has something you don't, and refusing to accept the only current solution because it's not "fair" is pretty much the very definition of whining, I'm not sure what else to say.

The odd thing is it's not even an uneconomical solution, as has been pointed out over and over--buying and importing RS1, especially when it's on sale, is a huge value for money in terms of the number of songs and the price of DLC.

It's not like the game doesn't work, or is fundamentally flawed, here. There are simply some purely optional add-ons you're choosing not to purchase under current conditions. You can continue to wait for a technical solution, knowing Steam may decide it's not worth their time, or you can buy RS1. But if knowing someone else has something you don't affects your enjoyment of what you do have, that's no one else's problem.

That must be where you're not getting it -- there's no bitterness on my part over other people having it. I'm happy for the people who aren't affected, and I'm happy with all other aspects of the software. Neither of those change the fact that this is an advertised feature of the game that is not being delivered.to a number of users due to a issue with the delivery system. It's not right that both companies know about the issue and yet nothing has been done by either of them to make this right for the affected customers.

So.... you'd be happy to pay for stuff you don't want, as long as you got a lot of it for the price? I guess there's another reason we're not seeing eye-to-eye here.

Besides that, what you described above isn't even a solution being put forward by the companies involved to address the issue. If the companies were to say "look folks, we're sorry for the inconvenience and that it's taken so long for us to come forward with a solution, so here's the deal we're offering to try to make this right..." then that would be different. But what you described is just other users making excuses for the companies while they do/say nothing and collect more money for it.

Look, I'm happy for folks that either got in on RS1 at the start, or wanted to buy it later for all the songs, but it doesn't make me a whiner if I don't fall into those categories and I don't understand why you are covering for the companies that should be stepping forward to address the problem? I'm not expecting them to kiss my/our ***(es) over something as small as this, but they should be speaking about the problem and coming up with a resolution or at least compromise to take care of the affected customers. There are plenty of reasonable suggestions out there, and the only ones arguing they won't work are other (unaffected) users.

You can download a copy of RS2014 (including all the licensed songs) and other PC games right off the UbiSoft store. They also offer lots of DLC for Assassin's Creed, Tom Clancy's something or other, and a couple other titles. Just pay with a credit card and download, like Amazon or a million other e-stores.

Where we seem to differ greatly is I see a technical error and an obvious workaround that's been presented, giving users a reasonable choice: wait for the fix, or buy a whole bunch of songs for the price of about a week's worth of Starbucks lattes--and at a significant discount over normal DLC.

No one was promised anything. The ads, IIRC, were that the old DLC works with RS14. It does. A technical issue keeps certain users from being able to access it, is all.

So all the whining, complaining, and angst about why you can't have your cookie like everyone else leaves me completely cold. You've got a choice. Make it and move on.

I've made my choice, and it doesn't involve waiting for something I don't want to go on sale so I can buy it at a reasonable price as a "work-around" to get the software that was advertised as working with what I purchased. Maybe that's typical in Washington DC, but most people I know wouldn't be happy with that.

I didn't even post on here to "whine and complain" about the situation, but what brought me back was Steel Nirvana taking it upon him/herself to ridicule anyone who posts that they don't think this is right and to ask the companies responsible to address it. It's not right, those companies should, and if other users aren't affected then maybe they're the ones who need to move on to other threads.

Try changing the Learn A Song list sort order, with the R1 button (song title, artist, year, owned, etc.) and see if you can find it that way. Sometimes a new song won't show up until you get to a certain list, then it will show up on all the lists after that.

It may be a blessing in disguise for me. My wife just asked me why another $50 went out of our account this month for Rocksmith DLC. What I didn't tell her is that I had $100 worth in my cart and it only went down when I was forced to remove unsupported items from my cart. LOL :P

Yea the steam sale was bad for me, I had been holding off on buying any DLC since December. When they went on sales for 25% off during the steam sale I bought everything I had been waiting on. It was over $150.
