View Full Version : Immersion Breaking Issues in AC

Why is it that AC games always look better and more immersive in the trailers than in the actual game? One of the biggest reason is because in the trailers, there isnt the annoying, stupid, immersion breaking white auto-aim outline on guards. It looks just TERRIBLE.

I know that the autoaim outline is used to make it easy to see which targets you have targeted for quick shot weapons, but what if you dont really care??

http://youtu.be/dCDvBPQtIec Like here, at 2:40, it looks GREAT, because no white outline.

http://youtu.be/3-BolM9fWzM here, at 6:50, it looks GREAT, because no white outline. Even without it, the player was able to target the two enemies nicely.

I just think that this is something that can be easily fixed, by giving us an option in the HUD menu. Anyone else aggravated by the outline? What other immersion breaking issues do you want fixed?

Hmm... I don't really mind the white outlines, when playing the game I'm so into it, I rarely notice them. An option to hide would be cool though, like with the HUD.
The second video with the Du Casse assassination. Before you enter the ship, the little cutscenes when killing the guards look so cool, I would love to have them in the game. :( And sorry, but no 100% synch for Ubi in this memory! Requirement was an AIR assassination!! :p

You do understand that this takes place entirely within a simulator, and not the real world, right?

Funny thing I did it exactly the way they did in the video until realizing I needed to air assassinate

As far as immersion issues go, screw the white outlines, it's the freaking sticky parkour controls that send me leaping on top of every god damned object within two feet of me. if I'm running toward a rope bridge, I don't want to jump up on the handrail and balance-beam my way across. And I can't tell you how many chests I've wound up standing on top of instead of looting... :nonchalance: That's why two-button freerunning was superior IMO.

But yeah, a HUD option to turn off the white outlines would be OK too...

They make the game look too "gamey". They should just be removed. If there's one or two guys you want to select for a quickfire, you just point the camera or move in their direction while using the quickfire. Quickfire isn't supposed to be totally accurate anyways. So it would work fine.

Outlines
Pop-up for every single objective (kill, tail, join, follow, rescue, walk, run, hit, press x to dig)
Pop-ups for every single man trying to hit me
Pop-ups for every single time someone sees me
Pops-up for every single time I enter in a zone even though I place a marker on it I know where I'm going STOP HANDHOLDING ME OH MY GOOOOOD!
Pop-ups that tells me what button to press againts which enemy even thouth I already had a tutorial on it, I have a brain you know?

Cheap animations (Altair's outfit stiking to Edward's legs)
Illogical animations (Edward killing an enemy on the ground with the horizontal side, just like if he is holding a tomohawk)
Useless animations (blowpipe)
Missing animations (Blending animations)
Ugly animations (all combats animations & slow motions)

But the water looks great and the pirate says Arr!

Well, they could still have something to signify who you're aiming at without using hugeass white silhouettes. We only need to see them at a range of a few meters or so, we don't have to be able to see them from space. A little dot above their head or something would be OK, as long as you could turn it off if you wish.

I remember AC1's outline was pretty great, it had much more effect but felt much more fluide, can't say why, maybe the little sounds that came with it. or just the fact that is was really esthetic.

That huge cloudy digital thing? Blegh. I never did like that. To each his own, I guess.

Look at this

and this
http://oyster.ignimgs.com/mediawiki/wiki-api.ign.com/assassins-creed-revelations/8/88/1.2b.jpg

same effect, yet the second one far less 'immersion breaking' than the first one. cant' say with tho. Maybe because the coloring goes onto the PNJ, and not only around him. And that is very clean and slight.

Do you have any images of the ACR one with similar lighting/background to the AC3 one? Because I think the white snowy environment in that shot is making the white silhouette seem less intrusive than it actually is in the game. I remember ACR's target outlines being really bright and distracting.
