View Full Version : P-38 is mean

the P-38 is a mean bird. the guns are so accurate and it has a big cannon. one day while flying in HL I was going after a 109 that got the advantage by turning ealier then me in a verticle climb and pointed it's nose down but away from me in an unusal angle. this was my only chance to get a shot on him or he would get on my 6 and I would die. I pointed the 50's at him and killed the pilot by a short burst in the cockpit. I was surprised I managed to hit him. it wasn't a lucky shot it's just that the p-38 is so accurate and those breaks help swing the nose a bit. btw the 109 was not close..it was just far enough away to cause anyplane a huge problem on getting a good hit.

I guess what I'm getting at is that a p-38 can make some crazy shots. so watch out you axis drivers http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

How can anyone like the P38,it is awful.I would guess that there are very few aircraft it is capable of completly over powering.
Maybe someone who is an expert in the P38 http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif can post a track to show me where i am wrong,or going wrong.

I cant say I'm an expert on the p38, although I have explored its limits a bit, but I know the axis planes well.
There is no doubt that the armament is effective and similar to the 109's.
The p38 can make surprizingly tight turns for a short while and its quite possible to shoot down 109's if u got an initial angle on him, but the p38 can hardly compete on equal terms with a 109 and a chased 109 escapes easier because of its accelleration and good maneuverability on all axis, the p38 cant do much if chased IMO.
The p38 is more difficult to fly in general.

A p38 pitted against zeros is a completely different matter because it can be used as a BnZ'er. and against a zero it works well. If bounced U simply fly away from the zero.
A few hits is also enough to down a Zero.
I have tried to stay and turnfight with zeros online, and although I dont know the p38 so well and turnfighting with zeros is an absolute no no I still had no trouble just changing direction and fly away when they had parked on my six.

Very interesting plane. Its ugly, wierdlooking and have a tricycle gear...so it must have a high coolfactor. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

One cool thing is that you can turnfight with 190s and beat them in that,
thats the only fighter I really dogfight with
otherwise I B&Z,
allthough the P-38 is a demanding
B&Zer as you cannot use so high speeds as in other energy fighters to be on the "safe side".

Use it with a couple of wing men, then it really shines and the J can dominate 1943 plane sets on its own but remember, when they were used in the Pacific they did very well because of primarily tactics and using the planes abilities to its fullest and guarding its weaknesses.

Its also a great mudmover, especially the L as it has those dive breaks.

I love the P-38 as an occasional bird. I find if you take it up too much you get all these people attacking you since your obviously an easier target. But at first, when nobody suspects you, the Lightning is great...firepower was one of its attributes, un-syncronized center mounted machine guns and cannon all in one spot.

i love the P-38 too, but as Icefire says, when someone spots you then you're the only target in the game especially since its 200 points for 2 engines for those who keep up.

The Lightning is one of my favorite mounts and it does pretty well against 1943 opponents if flown fast and medium to low altitude...it loses lift at high altitude and just doesn't hit advertised speed up high either...but most don't fly up there on line anyways...

There are probably a few tweaks that would really make the lightning a cool bird, but I'm not holding my breath for Oleg...
1) elevator authority and compressibility aren't modelled right...it is really no good for a B&Z cause it has no elevator authority at B&Z speeds and goes into compressibility at too low of altitudes...just didn't happen that way.
2) Slow speed handling/torque...it is ok but it should rule the roost in this aspect.
3) the above mentioned high altitude performance.

They are tweaks and the plane is good if flown fast and against historical plane sets...and against the Japanese, it should be deadly...especially if we have elevators that work in thick air at high speed!

take a 109-z up, and u'd see how the 38 could have been like if oleg would have done his job properly. that bird will handle both right and left hand turns with ease..no snap stall; p-38...snapstall to the left.

climbrate on the z...will get to 3k meters in a hell of a hurry. takes almost 2x's longer for the 38-j to get there. fuel load for both planes at 50%. zoom climb also double over the 38. and the issue of compressibility in the z....ummmm, what compression...isnt any. u can peg the airspeed indicator to the max reading; 700, and still pull out of the dive with no problem. try that in a 38...cant be done except for the L. roll rate: almost on par with a p-51. torque noticeability....NONE. and oleg says that u cant model 'no-torque'. u is wrong...test flight the 109-z and then say it's not possible. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-mad.gif

In the P38 I can take on just about any plane 1v1 and win, but the problem with the P38 is it is a big target and many see it as a easy kill so it attracts at least 2 or 3 planes. I often find myself outnumbered while the rest of my team flounders around at sea level.

BTW- I have gone up against 109Zs 1 on 1 and easily out flown them in the P38, it just takes energy management and dicipline.

I love the P38 in FB and I hate it as well. I will agree the P38 in FB does not reflect all that has been written about it.

Has anyone taken any good tracks of how to fly and fight in the p38,still not convinced of how it competed.
