View Full Version : Best album to play while flying?

georgeo76

Forget in-game music, or individual songs. What album would you listen to?

Please keep in mind that this is about flying, not just your favorite. For example we all know that Dark Side of the Moon is the best album of all time, but would not work w/ flying.

My choices: (no particular order)

Faith no More: angel dust
Beastie Boys: Licensed to Ill
Led Zeppelin: Physical Graffiti (disk 1)
Metallica: Ride the Lightning
Nine inch Nails: Pretty hate machine
Nirvana: Bleach

I beg to differ.
Comfortably Numb - Us and Them - Young Lust - The Great Gig - Breathe - Time - Money goes great with flying!!

If I listened to music while flying that would work for me. Alas FR doesn't go well that luxury as I need my ears in the game.

1) Dimmu Borgir: Death Cult Armageddon
2) Slayer: Diabolus in Musica (especially "screaming from the sky" http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif)
3) DragonLord: Rapture
4) Immortal: Sons of Northern Darkness
5) Any Slipnot
6) Metallica: ...And Justice for All
7) Ramstein: Sensucht (I bet I spelled that wrong)

Albums not to listen to while flying:
1) Anything by Borknagar
2) Anything by Cradle of Filth except maybe for "From the Cradle to Enslave"
3) Anything by "My Dying Bride" unless you are getting your *ss kicked, then it might be pretty good in a morbid way http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/88.gif

Defense Mechanizms - Michael Harris http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

Harris is an awesome, classically trained Progressive Rock guitarist and the album is a complete instrumental with guitars, bass and a double-kicking drummer. My two favorites are "Tarantula" and "Wolfgang Lives!" - a modern excerpt of Mozart's 25th.

I found out how the song "Tarantula" got it's name as I have an awesome guitar-playing friend who learned many of the songs off of that CD and in certain parts of the song, the fingering and his hand, look like a tarantula walking up and down the neck.

I also have his live album that he did with David T. Chastain.

Check it out here: http://www.guitar9.com/defensemech.html

You won't be disappointed. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I gotta go with the earlier post of none for FB. just engines and guns, some air raid sirens.

but for FS9 I usually just listen to something strikes me at the moment, cuz in modern planes they have these nifty stereos... actually can play music off the kneeboard .

In FB maybe the best would be an A.M. transistor radio, with that tinny sound.tuned to a Big Band station. Glenn Miller Orchestra or something.

And I went and looked Glottis77, there were no lyrics for "Flight of Icarus" there . wassup with that? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

Most of the time, the radio. (WTKS 104.1, Orlando for any others out there)

But as for albums... well, then it gets kind of odd. No heavy stuff, it angries up the blood, and I get too tense. Miss shots, botch chases, flaming wrecks.

Frank Zappa: Yellow Shark
any other Zappa, though instrumentals are best.

Tori Amos: Little Earthquakes, Scarlet's Walk or Tales of A Librarian, very apocalyptic...

Sarah Brightman: any operatic piece, for that cinematic feel

Beck: Sea Change, it's like one long drawn out song, and just the right tempo for longer flights. The music forms to the fight, and doesn't get in the way

U2: Just about anything

Peter Gabriel: So, & Secret World: kind of the Amos feel, but with a male voice.

And I can't forget a possibly all but forgotten Welsh group called It's Immaterial. Great stuff. Album is Life's Hard and Then You die, if I remember correctly. I wonder if they ever cut another album.

Best album to play while watching a movie?
- while being in concert?
- in theatre?
- fishing or hunting?

I can understand some period (30's-40's)music but why anything modern? Kind of spoils the athmosphere IMHO.........

I'll go wit what has already been said:

1) Zeppelin - PG definately. Although currently have How the West Was Won in the player - something about "The Ocean" http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

2) The Who - Who's Next Deluxe. Particularly Baba O'Riley and Won't Get Fooled Again. With WGFA I guess I am trying to tell myself something... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/784.gif

3) Pink Floyd - DSOTM. Nuff Said!

4) Not Specifically in FB although it has been known to put in an appearance (I have the CD too) - Queen - Live At Wembley 86. Watched the DVD last night. What a show! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Sometimes I'll listen to more modern stuff... Ella Fitzgerald or Sinatra. I love that stuff!

When I'm flying in a He-111 bomber or a Stuka, I'm usually heard whistling and humming away to 'Aces High'-Luftwaffe March from the film Battle of Britain. I defy anyone to play the track, fly a He-111 and not singalong to it...it's damn infectious. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I don't listen music while flying. You are all so careful with full real settings, you hate the non-cockpit view, external views, icons... don't stand a single strange noise in or out the cockpit... but hear Metallica?

WW2 planes had no CD charger, I'm afraid... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

But when I arrive home, I enter the barracks and hear things like Henry Purcell's odes or Rameau's operas... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I've ridden a bicycle.... I've seen kids play with a bicycle.....BUT... I've never seen anyone PLAY A bicycle.
I remember seeing old footage of Frank Zappa play a bicycle like a musical instrament. And, he made it sound good. I believe he reprised that performance on the OLD OLD Saturday Night Live show.
I think he was one of the most under rated performers of our time. And his style wasn't just rock oriented.
He can't name kids for beans.......... but he can compose....

The best music for playing FB is the screeming of the engine on the 109's on manual prop pitch. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/icon_twisted.gif http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/mockface.gif
If you fly 109's on manual is no way you can listen music.

I wish I had the energy to read all the posts on this thread but I don't.

So in case nobody else has said it, I will say that the most appropriate music for FB is the music of The Army Airforce Band by Glen Miller i.e. if you want realism. He was loved by US and Commonwealth serviceman alike. Tunes such as American Patrol, Tail End Charlie and Jeep Jockey Jump somehow fit this fine game. Major Miller was lost in November 1944 in a Norseman on his way to Paris from England. The wreckage of his ac was never found but it was assumed he went down in the English Channel in bad weather.

Hmm! Peeople seem to forget there are bleeding great 1950's - 1980's rock n roll music that already claimed the skies and the spirit of dogfighting!

Iron Maiden's ACES HIGH still rules the bloody and smoking skies.

When it comes to driving or flying Little Richard's LONG TALL SALLY can't be beat...

AC/DC are peeerfect.

the list goes on and on......
