first, download a program like Fineview that converts your screen captures (press printscreen) to a format you can see.

I recommend using the 'pagedown' key to get the extreme closeup of your plane before you take the screeen shot. The scenery looks much better and the plane is more in prespective IMO

It depends. Are you good with programs like Photoshop? You want something similar to mine, with some text and or logo's?

Find or take a screenshot that you'd like to use as a sig. Taking screenshots can be done several ways. The first two are available using the PrintScreen key. When you press this key in the game two things happen:
1. Windows copies the current screen to clipboard in .bmp format
2. The game saves the current screen in the game folder in .tga format with a file name in the form grab000x.tga

When you exit the game, all the shots taken in your last session using the PrintScreen key will be recorded in your game folder as grab0001.tga, grab0002.tga, grab0003.tga etc and the last shot you took will be in clipboard. You can save the clipboard shot by opening MSPaint and using the paste function, then saving the result. If you wish to keep the .tga shots in the game folder you'll have to move or rename them because they will be overwritten the next time you start the game & take screenshots.

The other method for taking screenshots involves using 3rd party applications such as fraps (available for free at www.fraps.com (http://www.fraps.com)) which usually record screenshots in .jpg or .bmp format.

To convert your chosen screenshot to a sig you'll need some means of editing the picture. The most basic edit is a simple format conversion/resizing application such irfanview (also available free at www.irfanview.com (http://www.irfanview.com)). This will allow you to convert to .jpg or .gif formats (best for internet use due to their good compression) and resize the image to comply with the forum limits (see the first post in the "Official Sig Test Thread").

For more sophisticated editing, the most popular choices are Paint Shop Pro, Photoshop and The Gimp. Photoshop is professional standard but rather expensive. Paintshop Pro doesn't do some of the effects work as nicely but is about 25-35% of the price of Photoshop. The Gimp is open source (and hence free) and falls somewhere between Paintshop Pro and Photoshop for results.

All three of these applications allow you to add text, merge or montage images, resize, crop, change format, add effects etc to your images.

Once you have an image you like, you'll need somewhere to host the result so you can use it as a sig. Many ISP's provide some webspace with your internet access, but as an alternative sites like photobucket provide free hosting for a small quantity of files. Sig images that comply with the forum limits are not likely to exceed the storage & bandwidth limits that apply to either ISP webspace or freehost services, so which you choose is a matter of what's more convenient for you.

Detailed instructions of how to use the 3 graphics editing packages mentioned above are beyond the scope of thread like this but all three have plenty of support sites, both official and enthusiast created. You can also get quite a few tips & hints in the IL2 Paint Schemes Forum.

I'm not so sure about that, beyond at least the fact that milk is good for you.

That whole behavioural modification therapy thing is, like, so last century d00d.

the easiest way to get a sig is to post a message complementing others sigs and saying something like "boy, i sure do wish I could have something that fancy". Before long your pm box will fill with people offerring their services and....oh never mind you got the hang of it.

dammit....
i've got a great shot of a thunderbolt and a 109g, but the whole pic is ruined by some little blue writing that says 'bf 109 0.88' or something. is there any way to get rid of this?

I would get gimp(cause it´s free and pretty good)and erase the text.Just zoom in and fill even if you want to,pixel by pixel wich match the surrounding colour.

Paint does that too. In that P-47 sig pic I whipped up, there was plenty of blue text. I cut n pasted stuff over it quick and dirty. If you try, you can do a very nice job. I'm sure gimp is easier to use and more effective, but so far, I haven't needed it, even to change codes on an aircraft skin- I just cut n paste. You get pretty clever with it after a while
