Gib, what are those gunpods on the P-38's in your wallpaper? I have never seen those type of pods before, and have never heard of extra gun pods on the P-38. Whats the skinny on those?

Yes, not much info available on the gunpods, but they were used! I have two pics of them in use on P-38's in WWII. They were two .50 cal guns in each pod, giving the P-38 a total of 8 .50 cal and 1 20MM. Astonishing firepower! They were intended to give the photo-recon versions some firepower, but they were used on normal fighter versions to up there firepower. Im guessing for late Pacific and Med area's were lots of .50 cal guns were used to straif the small boats they were using at the time for supply shipping.

I have seen the gun pods for the 38, but seriously doubt that they were used operationaly.

the only case I have seen personally where guns were added was in the PTO theater, A.L. Robers and Ken Ladd shared a P-38J or L version, (cant tell by the pic) that had 2 extra .50 cal M-2s added in the nose just above the standard armament giving it 6 50s and a 20mm.

my source for this was Attack & Conquer, The 8th Fighter Group in WW 2 by Stanaway & Hickey Schiffer military books ISBN# 0-88740-808-7

The photo in the lower left is a modified P-38L. It had 8 .50 cal's in the nose (removed the 20mm) and 4 in the pods. It was a test rig. The nose armorment did not make it into production, but they used the gunpods. Thats from my book. The big photo shots a photo recon using the pods. They were available, and used. Thats the point.

gibbage, I am well aware of what the gun pods were. I am curious what book you have that shows this. I first saw the picture of the gun pods about 4 years ago online. I have never seen them in a book. I thought I had a lot of books on the 38, but I guess I need some more. could you please tell me what book you have that has these pictures in them.

like I said in my earlier post, the 6 - 50s and 1 - 20mm used by the two men are the only mods I have seen that somebody actually used in combat. I would like to know more about these gun pods myself.

P-38 in Detail and Scale, and P-38 in action. Those two pics are from those two books.
