View Full Version : Anybody still fly the IL2?

Just wondering with all the new aircraft available if anyone (other than me) still makes the IL2 their primary ride. After a recent article on AEP and its author stating that hardly anyone flies the game's namesake anymore, I'm just kinda curious.

I end up test-driving everything, but always come back to my trusty flying tank.

I've always found the pit claustrophobic. That giant windscreen seems to be 2 inches from your virtual eyes. Makes it quite un-enjoyable to fly. For me at least. ('course, the ring handle stick doesn't help either. lol)

I still really enjoy flying the IL-2. Probably the plane I can fly best, even now. My favourite's the 1 Series. With its 16 rockets I can literally blockade an airfield online... assuming I can get to it first http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif.

I do http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif. I even dog fight in the buggers and get results http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

They're a lot of fun, when they're not a challenge in dealing with frustration. Woe betide the unwary pilot that crosses my cannon when I'm in a late model one http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I love the Il2 and still fly it all the time, perfect for base obliterating.

Yes, I'm still flying it as much as ever. I only play offline and I currently have about 8 'pilot careers' going. Three of these are flying various versions of Il-2 (the others include Yak, Spitfire, ME 109, Me 110). As my skill gradually improves I've really got into some of the faster fighters but I still enjoy pounding targets with the Il-2. I love the way it handles too. Don't know why. Just feels good http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I love it too, but haven't had time to fly it lately with Aces, BOE and creating a campaign for the IL-2T.

I love dogfighting in the Il2-I. Those twin 23mm VYa cannon are great for ripping the wings off FW190s http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Hell, when I make anti-shipping coops, I use the IL2-T all the time. I don't want no He-111 BS! I fly the IL2T, and the IL2-3M quite often, but not usually on dogfight servers, as its quite useless for anything but vulching there. And I don't really do that.

Shturmovik all the way! The best part is when I shoot down fighters who think I'm easy prey. Its challenging to be sure and requires more thought to survive in the online environment, but its extremely rewarding to make it back to your field after having wreaked havoc on the enemy base and having been attacked by a swarm of 109s and 190s.

i find that the IL2 Sturmovik family a total blast to fly

made loads of coops for them

i just wish they werent so easy to kill

It there are not a bunch of 30mm wonder cannons flying arround and the sky has some clouds...than this is what I fly..especially on servers where you have to destroy the enemy airbase, it;s a blast.
I fly from cloud to cloud, than put the ordnance to good use and then I am runing for my life from cloud to cloudhttp://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Last week-end had 2 109F4 after me, and because both of them tried to park on my tail at the same time...boom! Down they went crashing into eachother...ofcourse I got credit for both "victories"

What I saw in AEP is that they;ve dumbed the AI gunners...I don't like to have them snipers...but I expect to at least be able to smoke and engine or kill a pilot when the enemy is trying to park in my 6 at less than 100 m...before it was possible,...now, you have to be lucky.

It's the reason I bought the game and still one of my favourites. When I feel frustrated because I can't last 30 seconds over the target in any other plane I go back to the airfield and climb into my trusty IL-2 (I don't care which model) and go back and give 'em fire-n-brimstone.

It may change the game's name.i think not many people fly IL2 anymore.

Yes - fly it most of the time - but it's getting harder - now a KIA or a 109Z can take it out with one bullet and Boris my rear gunner seems to be on the vodka - he can't hit a barn door anymore.

I'm in the middle of the stock IL-2 campaign and loving it. I love to dive on some tanks and get real low and listen to the gunner howl and whine. I always tell him to STFU and watch the six, you baby, or we will send you back to the Gulag.

Maybe they would! I've heard that soldiers who weren't shot outright for cowardice or other offences were sometimes sentenced to fly 10 missions as an Il-2 gunner. Must have been a pretty horrible ride with absolutely no protection other than the UBT between you and 1/3/4 20mms.

While not my main ride, it is one of my faves. Certainly my favorite Russian a/c. Makes ground-pounding a real pleasure.

That's worse than a death by firing squad in my book. Seems that you know you're dead if your in front of a firing squad. Can you imagine: you finish 9 missions and get capped on the 10th...just a few minutes from fulfilling your sentence? Damn...the terror!
Judging by how long my tailgunner lasts, 10 missions was a guaranteed long death.
