Hmmm.... it seems that FB has spoiled any other WWII sim for me. Standards are now too high!

If you enjoy freely adding a multitude of aircraft..mods..sounds and such pick up CFS2,,While not in the same class as IL2 or FB it can be quite enjoyable.
Think landing your BF109 is hard? try putting a Corsair down on a carrier deck!
Cannot recommend CFS3 as it was a maljor disappointment to many.

Many players loved European Air War from Microprose but I found it boring. There's still free add-ons to be had and lots of die hard fans. Cord's EAW Page http://eaw.thrustmaster.com/

The same is true for Jane's World War II Fighers. See sites like: http://ww2fighters.net/ & it's alternate web site http://janesww2fighters.net/

Check the SimHQ forums http://www.simhq.com/ for more.

I enjoyed CFS2 Pacific Theatre simply to fly P-38 3rd party add-ons.

But here's a sleeper that many gamers missed: Crimson Skies.

It's a fun arcade type of shooter with an olde tyme 1930's radio serial story line. I didn't find the backstory annoying as some people did and in fact it tied the missions together quite well. It is still available at http://www.amazon.com and in Canada at http://www.futureshop.ca

http://www.microsoft.com/Games/crimsonskies/

CSkies at the Red Skull Legion http://www.redskulllegion.com/main.htm & Ivo's Crimson Skies Plane Service and Collection http://www.geocities.com/powerivo/index.html

I see that Microsoft will be releasing Crimson Skies 2 for the XBox this October. Too bad. If it's ported to PC I will buy it.

I liked B-17 M8th explosion/tracer/sound effects. It's best imo.

Actually, with the 3.1 patch and all 1% aircraft, I would highly recommend CFS3.
Stock planes are the sh!ts, but the 1% planes are great. Excellent effects, and the sound is terrific. Plus, a much broader range of airplanes available.

stay away from cfs3, i have seen crappy stuff run on my PC in my time but this one deserves the all time worst piece of junk i have ever seen... only thing I like A LOT are the plenes 3D models, they are great, to some degree even better than IL2's, love the trails from fuel tank leaks too, those are the only things i can think of that I liked, but the FM is asbsolutely silly, not to mention the AI... oh my does that suck... try attacking a flight of B25, would you believe it? they break formation and engage you in dogfight maneuvers, sometimes they even manage to overturn you... btw, replace fps with spm (slides per minute)... get lost ms and your pathetic games

I still have an acount with Aces High. They have crappy graphics but 400+ users online in the evenings, and the opportunity to fly a 30-40 planes mission to voulch the crap out some poor bastards, makes me pay the 14$ monthly fee.http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Sigh.

I can't say that IL2/FB has spoiled me for all other sims, it hasn't. It's not the be all and end all to me, as great as it is.

I would give EAW a try. With all the work that has been done on it since it came out it offers quite a bit.
Try the links mentioned above.

Also, as I stated in a previous thread, Rowan's Battle of Britain is an excellent sim with all the work that has recently been done on it and with the upcoming version .97, the graphics and weather are gonna be outstanding.
Very challenging game and very fun.

CFS2 is a great game and well worth a try and CFS3, while a dud out of the box, is playable and fun with all the work that the CFS3 community has put into it. The 1% flight models are as good as anything FB offers.

And all the above games are compatible with XP.

I agree with staying away from CFS3...I already took mine back to EB to put in the discount bin, so I think that tells you what I think of it.

As far as I am concerned IL2FB and CFS2 are the only two sims out there worth playing. Many of the other sims mentioned will not run on XP, so keep that in mind if you are using this OS.

All the best, Don

In a very old interview, Oleg said that he allready signed a contract for the next two or three flight sims... /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

I hope for him, he does the release dates on time or, the guys at UBI might wanna look into the contract for a second time /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Don't try War Birds. FM is really lame. If you look for realism, there's nothing better than FB out there.

I would highly recommend Janes WWII Fighters, especially with all the add-ons now available. Some of the planes and cockpits are stunning, actually better than FB.

The last time I saw it for sale it was only $10 Can., but that was just the double cd, no box or manual.

fighter ace 3 and warbirds 3 arent bad, graphics dont come close to FB, but fms seems pretty nice they use charts and the fms are pretty realistic compaired to fb, but gunnery is easy.

Fighter Ace 3.5 is the best online WWII flight sim.

Territorial combat includes tactics to occupy and use enemy bases. Carrier landings and bomber formation runs are great.10 bucks a month! I played for about 8 months, which is about 80 bucks, yikes. You can get a copy for about 7 bucks and get a month for free. But after that, you're hooked. I would definitely suggest this one to anyone interested. Online admimn are always there to help, even classes are available. I won a free month once by shooting down the fox in the fox hunt. Great stuff.

It's pretty much set for me.. three titles in my hard-drive...

* IL2/FB for overall quality

- MP, like all boxed games, leave a lot to be desired, but the graphics and realism is outstanding. In my eyes, still an uncomplete, growing, experimenting game.. if there are two~three more titles coming out in this series, it's going to be perfect.

* EAW for a nice, realistic(but sometimes tiresome), immersive campaign mode

- Some quirks and inaccuracies here and there, but the "feel" of the campaign is like nothing else. The long fights raging for months, scourge of planes flying around, the mighty formations of buffs... the chills rising as you see two squadrons of 24x P-47s plow through your squadron of 12x Fw190s heading for the 60x B-17s...and the relief as your escorting 20x Bf109s suddenly come out of the blue and save the day... still the best Western Front sim out here, all through the years!

* Aces High for MMOG, with excellent and accurate FM

- A MMOG of merely 30mb or so for main component, but reigned for a very long time as having the most proud, and realistic FM of them all until IL2/FB arrived. Also, currently the most successful WWII air combat MMOG.

Graphics are lacking, as the target system was very low for so long time.. and some 'gamey' features due to its MMOG aspect, but in most every part, the experience of the development staff really shines in many aspects. Recently announced the development of AH2:ToD, scheduled for open beta in 3rd quarter of 2003.

...

The rest, have all passed through my PC one time or another, but none of them managed to stay.

"Aces High for MMOG, with excellent and accurate FM"

(????)

I'd say the FM is ok, but it seems like the planes HATE to bleed any airspeed while on approach for landing. You can coast along just above the ground at 200 knots for an eternity. This I don't like...

But I've played it online with tons of planes in the air--bombers, fighters, tanks on the ground, etc. It's a kick in the pants! Thumbs up!

You will no doubt hum and har over the options available.
Theres a good chance you will buy the Next 1C WW2 Combat flight Sim though.
Unless you have money to throw away on inferior contemporaries.

IF you are blessed with infinite amounts of patience and are willing to pay $12.99 a month then u may wanna try WWIIOL

its not necessarily a WWII flight sim... because it incorporates ground physics as well....

Honestly now...

The company and game is in its infancy and is undergoing major changes... but their attention to detail with their flight modelling is great... nothings perfect... but they do their very best to replicate their historical counterparts...

there are issues with Performance lags due to memory leaks within the recent patches.. which introduced Reasearch Development and Production (A complex system where stratiegic bombing has an affect on the overall production of game-wide vehicles and development of new vehicles - basically.. u keep bombing it and you keep hurting the enemy's ability to make war..)

I dont wanna BS anyone.... The game has its bugs... but its currently stabilizing itself after a major reworking of everything and is gunna take a while to level out... soon everything will be smoother again...

But the concept of flying for a common goal with hundreds and sometimes over a thousand others
fighting in the air, on the ground and sea, has yet to be topped in my opinion...

I'll post some Screenies if anyone wants
