It's a transparent gif. The image is still square, but the back ground is transparent. Photoshop will let you make them, as will other editors.

Guess you could take a screen pic of a thread, open it in your paint program, select the gray area around your avatar and color in the bits you don't want to show when it's posted.

I am no Photoshop expert but, why not just keep it square and use #4A515A (seems to be the colour) as the background. Then, on this forum, it'll look round..
I'd go for .jpg as well as it has gradients of colour, .gif is better for solid colours.
Hope this helps!

Okay, listen up buddy:

The PNG is the way to go:

Go to photoshop, make your circular thingy. But make sure it's on a transparent background. So see if you can cut out the circular area and delete the backgroun so that only the grey and white tile show, meaning it's on a transparent background.

Now, then saveas-> PNG format. And no interlace.

Voila, you have a transparent sig. Pngs can do smooth transparency too. And you don't have to convert to 256bit color as in gifs.

Good luck!

The problem with matching a visible color is that these forums alternate colors between posts, so it would only match some of the time.

With Photoshop, all you need to do is have a layered image with the "background" (or just bottom layer) transparent, merge all the layers and save it as a gif and that's it.

Sometimes though, it doesn't work out as well as you might hope. My sig is a good example. The edges didn't come out quite right but it's not so bad it destroys the image.

Ah, then this will have the box visible if on the alternate color.
