I'm still recovering hahahahaha!!
This video was entertaining in its own way, it's set the benchmark for worst execution of a demo, there's no possible way anything can top this.

Either combat is incredibly hard, or she absolutely SUCKS. Something tells me it's the latter.

On the bright side, it seemed more fluid and like there was less of a counter window than previous games. Although I guess that could be because I wasn't the one playing.

What I like:
Guns deal much damage
Stealth works(she just sucks)
Look at how the bushes look like!Thats what they meant with density
Optional objectives dont use half of the screen

What I dont like:
The player
The really loud sounds when Edwards touches the wood
Health regenarates(slow,but still)
The player
Optional objectives still there

Omg.. this was terrible. She can't play at all. Haha. we should have done some editing first before throwing this on the internet. gahh.. Well I didn't fully finish as to not spoil anything for myself. :| Wish the title would have said something about spoilers though because I did get pretty far after fast forwarding a couple time.

but on the other hand we did get several things from this video!

1. Even though she sucked there were SEVERAL opportunities where she could have used stealth
2. Great Music
3. Wonderful Lush plant life that actually hides you
4. Smart/Swimming AI
5. Awesome new fighting style -- I love the Dual sword action!
6. SFX sounded great and matched up giving you a better feeling overall with immersion--even though they were a little loud. but that's an easy fix I assume.

yes.. like 3 times in one demo! haha.

One time I was playing AC3, and doing the mission "Hostile Negotiations." I realized that I had left the stove on and the water for my tea was still boiling, so I jumped to my feet to go turn off the burner. I forgot to pause the game and left the controller in my chair with my dog nearby. When I came back William Johnson was dead and my dog had the controller right next to his head... MY DOG is better at Assassin than her! MY DOG!!! :D

The air assassination one is most annoying. Let me take out my target the way I want to ffs we're supposed to be assassin's. What good comes of this? It does nothing but limit freedom and it's bloody stupid.

In the past they have said that the number means that the game features a new Assassin protagonist.

I don't associate it with that personally, for me it's the 'new' AC game, not the one that feels like a spinoff of the one which holds a numeral.

Jexx21
08-22-2013, 09:12 PM
I think that this game deserves the number in that sense then because of the free-roaming naval and heavy improvements to the naval combat.

In terms of naval, it is the AC2 to AC3.

Shahkulu101

Jexx21

I said 'feel like' not that it actually is a spin-off. I think so because there aren't as much major gameplay changes than there were from I-II and II-III. Which is why it 'feels' to me ACR and BH are spinoff's. I know they aren't technically.

You know what we mean, no need to be pedantic.
ACB & ACR are called 'spin-offs' of AC2, even though technically that's not the correct term, but it doesn't matter since the context of the discussion is easily understandable.

Jexx21
08-22-2013, 09:22 PM
Oh, okey.

I hope they eventually implement wall-running and make the climbing less "automatic," in the sense that there should be a specific path to get up a landmark/viewpoint and that the leap grab should be a manual move again rather than an automatic move.

Ash has said that only about 10% of the optional objectives are that specific.

He would say that now that we've seen his earlier promises were bull****.

Devs: "Complete player freedom! :D "
Players: "Uhh, what about this one hand-holdy demo right here?"
Devs: "90% player freedom!"
Fans: "And this second hand-holdy demo?"
Devs: "....75% player freedom!"

I hope they eventually implement wall-running and make the climbing less "automatic," in the sense that there should be a specific path to get up a landmark/viewpoint and that the leap grab should be a manual move again rather than an automatic move.

Judging by this demo, some players can't even handle it when the game practically does the freerunning for them. Even if there was a specific button for "reach and kill Edward's target with no player input", this girl wouldn't have been able to find it.

I don't really understand why so many people already says that this game will suck. All we have seen is some of the locations and how the fights look like. What really matters is the story, it's not about how big the cities are, it's about what's going to happen IN those cities.

Because the reason I fell in love with this franchiche was because of the story, and we haven't got any details about that, who knows, maybe this'll be the best story yet. Let's not forget mysterious cubes, assassin's vs templars, a egoistic pirate that before our eyes is going to become a responsible assassin. Because you can make the best fightingsystem in the world, but without a good story it doesn't matter.

AC1 for example was very repetative and didn't have a big weapon arsenal or a fleshed
out fighting system, but we still love it because of the epic story that game is telling.

And saying that AC4 doesn't diserve to be a numbered title because of how it looks is just irrelevant. It is a new modern story, a new main charachter,a new setting and a new time period, so I don't see how some say that this looks like AC3.

Devs: "Complete player freedom! :D "
Players: "Uhh, what about this one hand-holdy demo right here?"
Devs: "90% player freedom!"
Fans: "And this second hand-holdy demo?"
Devs: "....75% player freedom!"

Judging by this demo, some players can't even handle it when the game practically does the freerunning for them. Even if there was a specific button for "reach and kill Edward's target with no player input", this girl wouldn't have been able to find it.

Depends on if we're posting criticism or discussing the game's high points. :) I own many games that I gladly describe as "great" about which I can name just as many flaws if not more than many of the game's most pessimistic detractors. But I love the games because of the characters and when I'm playing them, the flaws don't bug me. I consider them relative to my overall enjoyment of the game. I can often overlook most issues if I like the characters. But if I'm discussing the game, I can bring up more than a few issues that can be improved.

One thiing I know for sure, people who are into writing definitely trend towards pessimism. XD

But when stuff like that happens you can't help but laugh. As long as it doesn't border on the abusive and goes beyond that then it's fine to me, it probably did on youtube and that'd why they took it down.

It's great that we're finally getting unedited media like this. This had pretty good image quality too, this was the first time I was actually impressed by the game's visuals. Please keep posting whatever you find.

This footage showed some important details, even if it didn't intend to:
- Enemies are still deaf to player movements, you can sprint right to them and have them unaware as long as you're out of sight.
- You can blend in stalking zones even when an enemy is at the second stage of detection, upon which they'll revert to the first stage and follow you. This makes more sense than the way 3 handled this situation, where you'd just be unable to blend. It makes things easier, at least when dealing with enemies without lanterns.
- Grenade wielding enemies are much more common, and there's an indicator for when they're preparing a grenade and when it's about to explode. There's also an indicator for exactly when an enemy is going to fire a gun once they've aimed. These are nice little additions, but there was no option against grenades in AC3 but to run from them, which was awkward, and there's no indication that's changed.
- You can check the details of the area you're in at any time without pausing. Fantastic.
- Our first look at swimming enemies. I wonder if there are assassinations on enemies in the water, and if you can still kill an enemy by throwing them into it from high enough.
- There's a weird sound at 12:18, coinciding with the assassination target detecting the player again. I'm thinking this may be an indicator for the enemy aiming at you with a gun, but it's the only time it happens so that seems unlikely. Some kind of sound indicator for that would be very appreciated because the visual indicator is quite small and can overlap with others.
- We have an air meter for stealth swimming. This is long overdue, great to finally have it.
- Enemies don't go straight back to their neutral states when you've escaped them completely. They retain level one detection, which drains while you stay out of sight. This is a nice middle ground between a friendlier straight to neutral system and a more realistic permanently on high alert system. Looks good, but I'd like to see it really examined. There may still be a high alert system after that level one detection runs out instead of a reversion to neutral, this video doesn't give us the chance to observe it.

Some other things I noticed on the more cosmetic side:
- The new animus wall effect looks like water, naturally. It's really cool, I wish we could've gotten a better look at it.
- The Animus glitch effect when you're low on health resembles a scratched film reel, and I don't like it. Weird that the loading screen is completely out of focus too.
- Edward's dual sword flourish is just a little twirl with them simultaneously. I was expecting something a little flashier, like a double version of AC3's sword flourish.
- There's a harsh transition between full screen post process filters when the jungle is entered, like the transitions between Brotherhood's districts. It's really jarring.
- As others have said, the audio mix is very strange, with quiet music and extremely loud sound effects for climbing. The climbing effects seem to even cause everything else to fade out when they're played.
- The combat music is subdued, it reminds me of Revelations' combat music, which I really didn't like.

The big burning questions I still have that could be answered by anyone who plays this demo:
- Is the corpse detection radius still a full 360 degrees, in other words, can enemies know corpses are there without seeing them?
- What's the deal with the crouch walk? Is it just a transitional animation when coming out of stalking zones? Is it even still in the game? Not that it really matters, since enemies are still deaf to your movements. This was a big missed opportunity.

Again, thanks for posting this, and if anyone has answers to my burning questions, please let me know.

Even if you identify yourself as a 'casual' (the semantics of the word being generally quite broad), making a game more difficult would be better for you since you'd learn to adapt. If a game is watered down to mediocrity, your abilities will cease to develop and ultimately ground to a halt. Challenge is better imo.

If the difficulty was that of the Arkham games, that would be fine. Speaking of Arkham games, Assassin's Creed needs more bostaves.

The thing about making the combat as difficult as the Arkham games is though, that Arkham gameplay is split up into two modes. Combat and Predator. What we need to do, instead of just whining about how combat is easy, is think up ways to make combat challenging, but not add high amounts of frustration to it.

One of the things that I think should be done, is to bring back the heavy and light attacks from the first game. Tap for a light attack, hold for a heavy attack. These would only apply to "normal," "blunt," and "heavy" weapons. And also like the first game, to start a chain kill you have to click the attack button when your weapon hits the enemies, but I think the window for this should be a bit larger because I remember getting frustrated when it didn't work when I clearly clicked the button when I hit.

Now, with the AC3 combat system, the counter window time is large. Now, this isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it depends on how the counter system operate. Should countering automatically kill the other person? I think that certain guards (if not all of them) should have a system where they can counter your counters, but this doesn't result in them killing you, rather they just throw you off them, but you also get a smaller window where you can counter their counter (on your counter :P) and then you complete the actual counter-kill. However, I'm not sure how that system would work when countered with ranged weapons. You could of course, just make the counter window smaller, but I think that's a change that could add more frustration than challenge if not implemented properly.

I was also thinking that maybe like Arkham Origins, they should add an archetype that can actually counter-attack you. Maybe this should be introduced rather than the idea I put above.

To be honest, I don't think this would make much of a difference regarding combat difficulty. The biggest problem in AC gameplay is the enemy AI, that much is clear, especially after seeing footage from AC4. Even the crap player in the video was able to get through combat situations with sheer luck because enemies took forever to react. The combat moves we currently have are fine, it's the enemies that need work. Adding light and heavy attacks to the assassin's arsenal or shortening the counter window will not make the game more challenging as long as enemies take more than 5 seconds to react to everything.

Simply having them attack faster would fix a lot of it... you can pretty much just combo-kill everyone in a big fight and only get attacked a few times in AC3. Plus it makes no sense that countering two enemies simultaneously is easier than one.

Well I just think that the AI in the Arkham games is generally on the same level of the AC AI in terms of actually intelligence, so I thought that bringing the player's powers down a notch would be better.

Although, the AI in Arkham City does have up to three attackers at a time and they do it more often than AC does. They're also adding the archetype that can counter attack your own moves.

I'm just saying, I think modifying the kill chain mechanic and adding in an archetype that can counter-attack would be great. Perhaps making the damage of the enemies higher would also be a good idea, but that has nothing to do with the AI.

Making each enemy a challenge to defeat isn't a good idea, I think that the ideal level of challenge is the challenge that the Arkham games gives you (which can also be problematic with the predator and combat modes, but as said before, the Gunner archetype sort of simulates this).

I don't think you can counter with hidden blades in AC1?
You can quickly switch to them during combat and pounce at a guard killing him, but I don't think you can counter

You actually can. Equip it in combat, and wait for the perfect timing. The counter window is extremely small, but it's an ensured one-hit kill against basically anyone

Just like the grenadiers in AC3? (The ones with the axe and the tan coats.) Think the Jagers or whatever they're called also slapped you if you tried to attack them without the counter-break-defense.

Yes I knew they would do that in AC3, I just couldn't remember if they only did it if you tried to counter them first, AC2 also has guards that would try to counter you but Ezio would block their counter, I'm replaying it at the moment so should of thought of mentioning AC2's countering guards.
So really AC does have guards that counter you, they just don't counter you with their weapon or if they do the ancestor blocks it, otherwise they don't do a lot of damage

I would not call that fluid.

This video here is a game that has unrivalled fluidity in its combat.

When fighting against multiple opponents and being outnumbered, there is not a single instant in which one should be standing still and not moving the entire body.

When fighting unsanctioned, the objective is to get it done and get out of there period. These elaborate animations that AC has sometimes take up too much time when there can be anywhere from 3 to 10 guys standing there doing nothing waiting for the animation to finish.

To be blunt, AC is severely lacking in mentality of one who is fighting multiple opponents should possess.

Actually, in my experience, this is kind of the opposite of what I would say makes a great combat system. To the first point, if you want to make the game more challenging without making it frustrating, something to avoid is limiting the main character's abilities. More specifically, you want to avoid deliberately limiting certain capabilities, like defense. You WANT the main character to be able to deal with a ton of pressure in any situation. Then when you crank up the difficulty, you up the ENEMIES' abilities. If you limit the character's defenses, you're limiting the entire system as far as how much you cn crank up the difficulty. For example, enemies can't attack as often or if they do, they have to do it very slowly so you can get out of the way or hit them back. Point is, the more pressure your character can take on, the more intense you can make the enemies, and that's really where the challenge ought to come from if you ask me. If you want to make it harder to heal yourself when fighting an enemy, don't do it by making my character do some pointless extra animation when I use a potion or something (Monster Hunter), do it by giving the enemy the ability to stop me unless I find a proper opening.

And that leads me to my second point. I feel like taking damage shouldn't be based entirely on me making mistakes, it should be based around the enemy kicking my ***. I like quick, intelligent enemies that are capable of defending themselves and aren't just targets/moving hazards. Making each enemy strong is exactly what keeps Ninja Gaiden Black at the top of my action game list. Even the dumbest, weakest enemies in the game have more basic fighting skills than the enemies in most typical games. And Ryu can handle it because he can block and dodge on very short notice and change behaviors very quickly. I like it because i makes me feel like I'm actually trying hard to meet the challenge of the game rather then just rolling through it trying to avoid making mistakes. I know that probably sounds like a strange distinction, but that's how it is for me. I usually end up going through gmaes with a massive stockpile of items that I almost never use for anything and I feel like I'm just trying to avoid making mistakes in an easy game. But when I meet a real challenge in a game, it doesn't feel that way. It feels like I need these items to get through because the enemies are a worthy challenge. :D

So that's why I feel like enemies should be a challenge on an individual level, even if they're not ultra-smart. I just like fighting enemies that feel like a genuine threat and aren't just there to spoil your shiny perfection. I feel like all the best combat systems I've played have had these qualities of strong defenses and significant enemies, and the more they had, the better they ended up being.

That's how AC's fighting style has always been, and honestly, I kind of agree and disagree. If you've just seen a comrade get his *** murdered brutally, of course there's going to be a shock period, and you're not likely going to attack a second after he's been dispatched. I notice in AC3, ACR, and ACB that enemies attack when you're attacking others, and sometimes it can ruin a kill chain.

You can always just catch them in the counter window, though...

As is your right, but you're acting as if everyone in the entire world knows the basic controls of AC. Since AC4's combat will be a lot like AC3's (which casuals didn't even begin to tap) I didn't expect her to be completely pro. I watched the video because I wanted to find out more, and I did.

I would think they wouldn't miss the chance to have you use the Revenge in game, Blackbeard only had her less then a year before he run her aground in 1718, so the window in game is small but
They could have you do a mission for Blackbeard early in the game and he asks you to steer the Revenge for him.

In the latest gameplay vids you can see that if you don't do them you now don't get a red X telling you don't do them like in post games, also for me they don't break immersion, they are part of the immersion of being in the animus, after all they are just stuff the ancestor really did during that memory
