Here´s a post I wrote on the TrackIR forum and thought I´d share it with you as well.

This is a campaign mission from FB. It´s not especially hot flying or fancy TIR usage, it´s just a recording I wished to share with people who don´t have TIR or are just learning to use it and prehaps have difficulties. This is something anyone can do with the unit and a decent config. Simply put, I had fun with a great game the TrackIR turned into an awesome experience.

TIR won´t turn anyone into a hot pilot, but it´ll make the constant dying a lot less frustrating... I still get a lot of those Top Gun moments ("Where did he go?" Where did WHO go?" -a conversation between a pilot and his radar operator), but now I have only myself to blame.

About the track; leave the manual view control off so you can see TIR in action. This track has an entire flight in it, I used time compression and autopilot until the enemy showed up after about 10min or so (a little over 1min compressed). People who have never used TIR might be interested to see more than just the fighting part so I didn´t cut the track. No comments about the flying, please, this mission is from my Time-to-try-all-those-planes-I´ve-never-really-flown-before Russian campaign.

Hmm I wonder if I should get a bonus or something from Naturalpoint... Just remember that the TrackIR requires practise and tweaking if you want to get the most outof the experience, but the end result WILL be worth all the trouble.

Thanks for that, I'll give it a try when I get home from work.

Looks excellent, now mind posting your track-ir setup file so I can try out and compare to my own? /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Here´s my setup file:

http://www.student.oulu.fi/~ailomaki/track/il2.tir

This probably isn´t much use without describing the physical setup. My TIR unit is sitting on top of a fresnel lens approximately 50cm from my head. The reflective dot is attached to a pen taped to my headphones.

Thanks man, you just helped me out tons and tons and tons. I'd give you karma if the forum would support that feature. THANKS! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Just remember that correct setup is everything with TrackIR. It might also take some practise to learn how to use it properly, but for most it´s a great experience and for some like me it´s the single most effective immersion booster in simulations I´ve ever used (on a home computer).

I´ve been thinking of writing a short tutorial on how to place the tracker unit and reflective dots, I´ve noticed that some people have difficulties with it.

Be warned, though, that TIR has potential to make you look very stupid if you´re not careful. First of all some people place the reflective dot on the forehead and forget to remove it until someone else points a finger at their forehead and laughs. A pencil taped to a headphone set doesn´t look a bit less stupid, but at least the risk of people seeing you wear it is smaller.

The most dangerous chance for losing one´s reputation permanently comes after prolonged use of the TIR. After using it for a while looking around in simulators by just moving your head becomes very natural (well, actually it´s natural right from the start) and the next time you go to a friend´s place and decide to play Il-2 on his/her computer to show off your superior skills you have a good chance of being laughed at. It´s actually quite humiliating trying to look around by moving your head just like all the people who have never flown a sim tend to do and have a friend lecture you about snap views and all those nice buttons you can press to look in other directions...

Here´s a thread I made that might explain some issues with setting up the TIR properly:
